KARACHI: Former T20 captain Shahid Afridi, while responding to a question, said “money has always been an issue for Javed Miandad”.
The all-rounder was talking to journalists in Karachi at the book launch ceremony of sports journalist Saleem Khaliq, when a reporter mentioned it to Afridi that “Javed Miandad has said that Afridi wanted farewell game only for money”.
To this Afridi responded saying, “money has always been an issue for Javed Miandad”.
He went on to say that "it doesn't suit a legendary cricketer like Miandad to pass such irresponsible comments".
Afridi said people loved him a lot and it doesn’t matter to him much whether he gets the farewell game or not.
“I will meet PCB executive committee’s chairman Najam Sethi and talk to him about what the board wants to do regarding the farewell game,” he said.
Miandad levels match fixing allegations against Afridi
Reacting on the controversial remarks passed by Shahid Afridi, legendary batsman Javed Miandad levelled match fixing allegations against Afridi.
While talking to Samaa TV, Miandad alleged that Afridi fixed matches and sold Pakistan team. “The whole team had fixed matches,” he claimed.
“If I had any money related issues, I wouldn’t have left the team, but I did,” said Miandad.

Last month, Afridi had asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to give him a farewell match so that he could exit international arena in a befitting manner.
Afridi, who quit ODIs last year after the 2015 50-over World Cup, says he deserves a farewell match, and he has asked the PCB to provide him with that so that he can bid goodbye to his fans.
“A farewell match is my right,” the all-rounder said while talking to a private news channel.
It may be recalled that Pakistan were eliminated from this year’s World Twenty20 after losing to India, New Zealand and Australia in the preliminary stage of the event.
Consequently, there were talks, at that time, about this being Afridi’s last T20 campaign.
When a journalist recently asked Shahid Afridi about his fitness, he was met with a typical Afridi cross bat response: “Alhamdulillah, tum jaise dus bande main abhi bhi sambhaal sakta hoon (by the grace of God, I can still take on 10 guys like you).”
In the same interview, he had expressed his desire to represent Pakistan.
By some media accounts, Afridi was in talks with chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq and was seeking a farewell game against the West Indies in the United Arab Emirates.

NO Shahid Afridi, a Farewell game is NOT your right.
YES Shahid Afridi, a Farewell gave, would have been your right if PCB had made it, it's policy to do so. I am not sure, if we in Pakistan have a present / retired Test Cricketers Association. This would have been an important issue to discuss with PCB, after all it is the exciting players, that bring crowds and Corporate sponsors out to the game.
However it is not right for PCB to give some players a farewell game and ignore others.

We need to respect our heroes. Afridi had brought so much goodwill around the World for Pakistan and Pakistanis were made proud by this hero and given so much joy by his many memorable plays.
Teams around the globe pay respect to their retiring players specially the Great ones.
It will be a shame if we just let him walk away from the field without any grand farewell.
Mr. Shahyar and others should drop their attitude and do the right thing. If the crekit board does not do the right thing, PM should get involve in this mess.

Im no fan of Afridi but I think he deserves a farewell game. I mean after all he isn't horrendous as a player. To judge Afridi based on the last 2 years is really unfair. As the 7th batsman and 5 bowler in one last game is not the end of the world. I mean he did give almost 20 years of international cricket. People shouldn't be treated like some disposable garbage, class and respect goes a long way. Money do you really think that after having played maybe 1000 intl games that he needs one more? He already has other sources of revenue AND even if it were for the money, I think he deserves a farewell game.

Shahid Afridi is a player with very average statistics. His batting average in one-days is 23.57 runs. A horrible batting average for T20s and very meager average for tests. Similarly bowling average is 34.51 runs per wicket. Bowling greats like Wasim Akram have an average of 23 runs per wicket. I don't really understand the what's the big deal about this guy.

Kumble and Ganguly got very low profile farewell games. Shahid cannot be compared to any of these legends. why is he so obsessed with having a farewell game. In Australia , South Africa & England great players announce their retirement at the peak of their careers whilst they are still playing at the highest level. I am not aware that any player had demanded farewell match when they had been struggling to perform for a long period. Shahid Afridi has earned a fortune from his career so he does not even need a benefit match. Please retire gracefully before another Javed Miandad strikes!

Aah Afridi's critics: Stop your lambasting against Afridi. He defended himself against a foolish comment. However, I would have personally verified such a comment before responding. But Afridi's response is still appropriate. I never like him as a cricketer but people liked him and that matters much. When Najam Sethi said he should be given a farewell--that should end all discussion. We all should respect our heroes and people who give us joy and pleasure. Afridi was nevertheless a very sensational player and always drew attention more than anybody else.

Afridi may be right to quite an extent but his outburst is mainly due to the pressure which he quite often feels due to his inconsistent performance. His record clearly shows that he performs only once or twice out of ten matches he plays, for the rest he tries to make up through media presence and coverage, but there also he messes up. He has always had problems whenever he is asked a difficult question and/or receives any critical comment. He has always lost his cool and replied in negative and nonsense. He might be comfortable in retiring from cricket but he does not appear to be ready to give up his commercial value which will also go with cricket !

He is totally out of his mind now (if he had one!)
The expectation from a professional cricketer is to perform well. That is what they sign the contract for. Showing performance and winning is part of the contract. Part of contract is if someone performance extra-ordinary then they get bonus money as well.
Certainly, only delivering to expectation would not earn anyone a right to ask for something special or even feel like a hero.

Before this remarks of Afridi, I was one of the fan of Afridi, but the time he passes such a shameful remarks for one of our Great Legend of Pakistan, my head is down to earth and i feel shame of myself for making Afrida my idol and now it my responsibility I should beg sorry from our legend Mr Javed Miandad.

Afridi statements make no sence. When he is on field, mostly 1st ball and caught or stump or clean bold and bye bye cautch you later. With such histroy he should not complain against Miadad's behaviour.

This shows how seriously Afridi considered the concept of international cricket during his career. If he didn't have the ability to clear the fence he wouldn't have lasted one year in the Pakistan team. International cricket is not Gulshan Iqbal neighborhood cricket league. To demand an international farewell match just because he has been associated with the team without regard to how it may actually affect the outcome of that game is selfish to say the least. Pakistan have clearly found a more committed group of cricketers.

Money was never an issue for the Great Javed Miandad. If it was not for Javed Miandad, 98 per cent of the success Pakistan achieved under Imran Khan's captaincy would never have happened. Miandad, batting at number 4 position, always came to the rescue of the team. 99 per cent of the time he arrived at the crease at a time when two quick wickets had fallen, and the batting line-up was in tatters. It was he and he alone with his batting and thinking made the situation stable. Afridi's entire career in the team has been during the dark era of match-fixing ordeals. No one can point such a finger at Mr. Javed. Afridi should have been better off by just saying " No Comments ".

Money never be the problem for Afridi. He has the highest earning ratio of earnings/runs. While Javed Miandad has very low earnings/runs. So he is very right for his comment against JM.

i just say these small sentence that afridi should respect the seniors and dont compare himself with legends ..there is big difference between javaid and afridi status regarding cricket..javaid miandad s contribution is much bigger then afridi to pakistan team.javaid was a complete batsman not a hitter .afridi can not be of javaid s status.

Afridi is not legend. All and one to respect Legend Heroes, including Afridi. Money may be matter for Miandad or anybody, but we saw he did not run after money like others in our fabric. His demand for a farewell match seems unjustified.

we are pakistan and should do things that india did not to tendulkar,dravid etc. shahid afridi should arrange a match with pakistan test team by selecting a team for himself.it is his right. if others dont know about their rights and dont ask for it is not his fault. Everyone has right to ask for farewell they can manage.

No one should think that it is their right to have a farewell game. Nowhere in the world do players demand a farewell game. Many times, fans will make their favorite stars last game the farewell game. Pakistani cricket is in shambles and this guy demands a farewell game? Gimme a break!

Legends have come and gone without much of a noise, but don't expect this from Afridi who is neither a legend nor he will go out without noise. Deep inside he thinks that he is the greatest thing that happened to Pakistani cricket and he is not the only one to blame for that. We as Pakistani's fans/media are equally responsible for making a mediocre player into what he is. These players blocked talent coming into the side for so long and just look how the team got so much talent after their exit.
No farewell at the expense of loosing match for out of form players. Pakistan First !!!!

Shahid Afridi is a great player. Cricket fans , not only in pakistan but in other parts of the world like him so much.
He has entertained the fans by his hard hittings many times.
PCB should give him a farewell match on its own , without Afridi asking for it.
Cricket fans will miss him.

Shahid Afridi's demand is as much unreasonable as was his approach while batting. Best eleven players must represent the country in an international game. Afridi never used common sense when he batted and now he is showing that he has not got it at all. He won us some matches purely because of his bravado.

First of all players like Afridi ( legends) don't worry much about money, because he can still play anywhere in the world and make much more money than a farewell match will give him. Chances are he will give that farewell money in charity , in Pakistan, and not use it to invest in a Panama company.
Javed Miandad is known for his cheap class language. He learned cricket but never some manners. He does not know that respect is earned not a right. Afridi was decent enough to push the matter aside instead of attacking back by spreading some false rumor about Miandad. On the other hand Miandad does not know he is complicating the position of his own national team by making irresponsible comment of ' Match fixing'. Grow up Miandad.

I will say both sides are wrong on this issue. Shahid should have retire after the poor performance of the team in the world cup. On the other hand, PCB should have appreciate his contribution over the last 20 years. Nobody can deny his contribution to the cricket. PCB should have included him in 3rd ODI against WI.

I watched cricket mainly to see Boom Boom hit sixes. Younis Khan and Inzi are far better cricketers than Javed. Javed is the most childish senior cricketer who has given such irresponsible comments. Bye the way I have never even thought of Javed videos on youtube cricket but its always BOOM BOOM on my mind when I think of PAK cricket. Love u Afridi.

Miandad should say sorry to Afridi. Miandad always has this problem of opening his mouth for unnecessary things and beating his own drums. Another such player is Basit Ali, who was done between his legs by Shane Warne. These players may be great but have to learn humility.
