KARACHI: Pakistan's Test team made history Monday as it clinched the number one spot in the ICC Test rankings after the rain-hit fourth and last Test between the West Indies and India ended as a draw.

Misbah-ul-Haq was delighted to become the first Pakistan captain to inspire his side to the top of the Test rankings.

ICC-cricket.com reported the 42-year-old saying, “There is no greater feeling than to achieve the number-one ranking in the most traditional and purest format of the sport. This is what cricketers play for and want to achieve in their careers.

“Number-one ranking is a reward for something we had planned as a group a few years ago and have worked extremely hard to achieve it. To top the Test table, which boasts some of the best sides and players, is something to be very proud of.

“I want to compliment everyone who has been involved in the process, including all the players, the support personnel, the management, as well as our loyal fans and followers who remained committed to us and continued to back and support the side through the good and not-so-good days.

“For us, the number-one ranking is not a destination but part of a journey. Our long-term objective and strategy is to remain competitive, continue to challenge the top sides with good cricket and once again become the most followed side like the Pakistan teams of yesteryears. If we can achieve these on a consistent basis, then I am sure there will more laurels like this down the line.”

Pakistan's chances picked up after a splendid 10-wicket win over England which levelled the recently concluded four-Test series.

Pakistan featured as top Test side for two months from August till September in 1988.

ICC Test Rankings
ICC Test Rankings

This is the second time that Pakistan has climbed to the number one position, the last time being 28-year-ago.

Pakistan climbed to the top spot after the West Indies and India reached a draw in the four-match Test series.

The Virat Kohli-led India side needed to win the series with a margin of at least 0-3 to retain their status as top Test side after Australia, captained by Steven Smith, was whitewashed by Sri Lanka 3-0 earlier this month.

The rankings system

The current Test ranking – known as the ICC Test Championship – encapsulates top 10 Test nations.

In the 157 months since the current system's introduction Australia, (number one in three stretches totalling 81 months or over 51 percent of the time), South Africa (thrice, totalling 42 months) and India (twice, totalling 21 months) have primarily outshone.

Pakistan, however, featured as a top team for only two months nearly three decades ago.

In the 1952-2003 period, Pakistan was retrospectively rated the top side during August-September 1988.

The ICC recently applied its current rating system to results going back to 1952, prior to which the data available is deemed insufficient for calculation purposes due to the infrequency of matches and the small number of competing teams.

Well done Misbab ... If you were a captain of ODI and T20 till now then we had some good ranking over there as well.

But critics and nation favoring like to Afridi and others undeserved players makes the current situation .

Omar Aug 22, 2016 07:03pm

.........and without even playing a single match at home.

Sarah Aug 22, 2016 07:04pm

7 years of hard work with total new team playing away from home and neutral venues all matches requires lot of dedication, determination and effort. Thanks King Misbah for Glorious moment in Test cricket history.Inspiration for everyone.

Congrats Misbah!! Congrats Pakistan!

J. Gamble Aug 22, 2016 07:06pm

Pakistan moved from #2 to #1 spot without doing any thing, and just because India -West Indies 4th test produced no result. I'm not impressed. This raking system is highly flawed.

hassan Aug 22, 2016 07:07pm

All the teams in the top slots are really equal. Does being number one for a few days have any meaning?

Ali jee Aug 22, 2016 07:08pm

Do they get paid for this

Adnan Ahmed Aug 22, 2016 07:08pm

I would love to see a Pakistan vs. India 5 match test series to settle this...at a neutral venue and with neutral umpires.

Roy Aug 22, 2016 07:10pm

Congrats Pakistan! The real test is to sustain the top position, which in few months will shuffle like anything.

Satyam Aug 22, 2016 07:09pm

Zealot Aug 22, 2016 07:17pm

Misbah ul Khan Niazi..only you deserve this credit.today pakistan feels proud on you for this great achievement.Remember dear a test is required to test a test.your test too will be tested on foreign land.forget the otherwise keep focus ON like that.Show that you can win in australia too if not win THEN draw with dignity.....Marvellous Misbah.Passionate pakistan

Tahir A Aug 22, 2016 07:17pm

Excellent achievement. Mubarak ho sab ko. Let us enjoy it to the fullest.

In the meantime, we must be looking for new and younger faces preferably in their teens to start replacing the magnificent contributions of our older (but young in spirits and fitness) brigade who are in their 30's.

Zahoor Ahmad Aug 22, 2016 07:19pm

The proudest moment. Thank you team Misbah.

jagajilly Aug 22, 2016 07:18pm

@J. Gamble India too moved fm 2nd to 3rd basis the failure of Aussie in SL..In test, I think, Pak played better cricket in England considering the lack of exposure their players has in the last few years....Its truly commendable achievement against all odds..Lets learn to appreciate right performance at least in sports

Arisha G Aug 22, 2016 07:19pm

"Sab ki nazron mai.........Pakistan!!!"

Sarcastic Scoundrel Aug 22, 2016 07:19pm

@J. Gamble Closed your eyes when King Misbah was beating England in England in London

Mustafa Aug 22, 2016 07:21pm

Well done Pakistan. Please try to maintain this position and try the same for the ODI format. I cannot be not happy.

Vivek (Indore) Aug 22, 2016 07:22pm

Because India's match ended with rain interfering. Pakistan was "lucky" this time I guess.

Congratulations Pakistan.

bharat Aug 22, 2016 07:22pm

A great achievement indeed. This shows the real calibre of Misbah.

Zulfi Aug 22, 2016 07:23pm

As much as I am pleased about this, I strongly feel that more value should be given to away series and even among away series to a performance in unfamiliar conditions (Asian teams in non-Asian and non-Asian sides in Asian conditions). I do not think that the current rankings system takes into account these factors enough or even at all.

More later..

syed wasim haider Aug 22, 2016 07:24pm

Keep it up

Zulfi Aug 22, 2016 07:24pm

So let's see how the respective test teams have fared in unfamiliar conditions in recent times.

A- Overall which is the strongest Asian test team in non-Asian conditions (in Eng, Aus, SA, NZ)? B- Overall which is the strongest non-Asian test team in Asian conditions (in Pak, India, Lanka, UAE)?

I have discounted test series against Windies, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh as they are weak sides right now. I have looked at the most recent away series only

Asian Teams:

  1. Pakistan (Away)

vs England 2-2 (2016) vs Australia 0-3 (2009/10) vs South Africa 0-3 (2013) vs New Zealand 1-0 (2011)

Overall Win/Loss ratio = 3/8

  1. India

vs England 1-3 (2014) vs Australia 0-2 (2014/15) vs South Africa 0-1 (2013) vs New Zealand 0-1 (2014)

W/L ratio = 1/7

  1. Sri Lanka

vs England 0-2 (2016) vs Australia 0-3 (2012/13) vs South Africa 1-2 (2011/12) vs New Zealand 0-2 (2015)

W/L ratio = 1/9

continued..

Remo Aug 22, 2016 07:25pm

I don't get it, India was #1 before the current test which got washed out, Pakistan was #2 in the same period.

Now Pakistan has not played test in the last this period and India has not lost any test, so how exactly Pakistan becomes #1 ?

FAZ Aug 22, 2016 07:27pm

@Remo Boycott ICC.. With love From Pakistan

Baloch Aug 22, 2016 07:27pm

Kudos Pak team. Emulate the same in Odis. Way to go and you can definitely capable of doing it.

nadeem Aug 22, 2016 07:30pm

vow misbah

Sikandar Aug 22, 2016 07:30pm

Hats off to Misbah and team. Now get some good captain for ODI also.

Ansuman Aug 22, 2016 07:31pm

Actually india features thrice in test ranking and england also once.

M Akram Aug 22, 2016 07:31pm

Congrats Team Pakistan. And Well Done Misbah for stablising the Team and leading to be No ONE. Just fantastics.

ozzy Aug 22, 2016 07:33pm

@J. Gamble they not lost a series in how long?, lets see india try do that oh and not too not playing at home.

Sandhu Aug 22, 2016 07:35pm

Homeless and exiled Pakistani Cricket Team is now commanding the world of Cricket. 90% of current players even did not play a single international test match at home.

Enemy who tried to snatch Cricket the only charm we had is desperately failed because he probably forgot about the "Resilience" of Pakistani nation.

Anurag Gautam Aug 22, 2016 07:37pm

Congratulations team Pakistan but some applaud for rain too as it drawed the last test between India West Indies

gulzar Aug 22, 2016 07:38pm

Thanks the rain gods!

Nasir Aug 22, 2016 07:39pm

Congratulations, I hope they remain no 1 for a long time and maintain the winning rythm.

But still they must work hard for ODIs and T20's to come in top 3 rankings.

Harmony-1© Aug 22, 2016 07:43pm

@J. Gamble - There are always ifs and buts and scenarios...no good for such grudge! India's next few series are at home. You may well become no. 1 soon.

Sarah Aug 22, 2016 07:44pm

@Remo Simple Pakistan won it's last test match against Higher ranked team in there backyard while India drew there last Test match against lower ranked team,so points are taken away or given as per that.Legally Pakistan all matches should be counted as Away matches since there is no matches for them at home in Pakistan.

Eli Aug 22, 2016 07:43pm

Congratulations...but a sterner test awaits Team Pakistan in terms of retaining the top spot as they look to visit Australia and New Zealand next...

Javed qamer Aug 22, 2016 07:44pm

Congratulations. Pakistan deserves number one ranking.

aftab@UK Aug 22, 2016 07:45pm

@J. Gamble Are you claiming that India had a hand in 3-0 whitewash of Ausies by SL?

Cavalier Aug 22, 2016 07:45pm

Good going green shirts

Vicky Aug 22, 2016 07:47pm

Heartiest Congratulations to Pakistan team.. from India..

Steven Winson Aug 22, 2016 07:47pm

No offence, but ask again...was it a deserving spot! Honestly India or Australia should be there for consistence and awesome performance throughout!

Javed Aug 22, 2016 07:49pm

Congratulations because it rained and the test was drawn.

wanghai Aug 22, 2016 07:49pm

@Remo it's mathematics

Kuladeep patil Aug 22, 2016 07:52pm

congrats Pakistan,

Hamid Shafiq Aug 22, 2016 07:54pm

Misbah at peak of his carrier with leader of number 1 team in the world

Sam Aug 22, 2016 07:54pm

Very proud of great accomplishment!! Challange will only get tougher in next couple of tours but this should give guys more hunger to not loose top spot. Hope other sports also revive themselves soon.

Haroon Rashid Khan Aug 22, 2016 07:55pm

It is a great achievement for a Team in Exile. If they were allowed to play on our home grounds, they could have achieved even better points.

Khan Aug 22, 2016 07:56pm

@SACHIN ... No problem we can teach you too how to do push ups.

Son of Baluchistan Aug 22, 2016 07:57pm

Congratulations Pakistan team and Misbah to achieve the top most position.

Sarah Aug 22, 2016 07:58pm

@Steven Winson Quite honestly after Australia loss to Pakistan 2-0 in last test series, they would not be worthy of last position in ranking and same goes for India who only like to play against Zimbabwe because they know every time they play England they get thrashing from England.

Kamran Aug 22, 2016 07:59pm

Misbah's(tuk tuk) and genius of playing test cricket gave Pakistan number 1 position.

Without any home cricket since 2010 he and his playing eleven showed everyone the mental toughness and resiliency against all teams.

Congratulations for being number 1.

Nadeem Aug 22, 2016 07:58pm

Congrats green shirts, proud of you!

Nadeem Aug 22, 2016 08:01pm

@J. Gamble, You are not impressed by 'Pakistan beating England at their home' but impressed by India beating a weaker team like WI? :-)

Sarah Aug 22, 2016 08:01pm

@Steven Winson This record would stand forever unmatched being Number 01 without playing at home.No Cricket nation would be able to match record of King Misbah team record. For 7 years this team has been playing consistent cricket and has been treat to watch for it's fan whether chasing 387 in 4th innings or playing England on one of the bouncy track and Younis Khan scoring 218.No comments needed they are Real Inspirations to whole world and not just Pakistan.Take a bow!

Zulfi Aug 22, 2016 08:02pm

@Steven Winson

How does India deserve to be no. 1 test team. Their record is abysmal in non-Asian conditions, worse than Pakistan; see my post above.

I actually like the Indian model or approach to success!

Just follow the following 3 simple steps:

  1. Win comprehensively at home like beating Australia 4-0 and South Africa 3-0

  2. Don't give a damn about AWAY series in Australia, England. South Africa and New Zealand. Doesn't matter if you lose badly!

  3. Make sure you play a long series in West Indies and Zimbabwe and win both convincingly.

Success is guaranteed :)

And Australia with a W/L ratio of 0/9 in Asia absolutely does not deserve the no. test ranking

Afghan Aug 22, 2016 08:03pm

@Steven Winson I will put up the same question to you....Ask yourself despite not playing at home for last so many years Does Pakistan not deserve this ranking amongst all other nations playing at home and wining?????

Shampee Aug 22, 2016 08:02pm

Moment for more PUSH-UPs, Congrats Nation!!

J. Gamble Aug 22, 2016 08:05pm

Let's be fair. When 4th test between India and WI ended in a draw, pre-test status quo (ranking) should have been maintained.

surinder Jeet Aug 22, 2016 08:05pm

An absolute great achievement for a team that has seen so much strife, has not played on their home ground and has seen numerous changes in their players. A big salute to Misbah, Younis Khan and the team. This must be a wow moment for Pakistan. Incredible considering the background of the last ten years.

N. Modi Aug 22, 2016 08:15pm

I wish to see your push ups, and take selfie with you.

J. Gamble Aug 22, 2016 08:21pm

@jagajilly I agree, India did not deserve to be #1, or even close. Similarly, comparing to teams like Australia, South Africa, England, I don't think Pakistan deserved to be #1. Don't get me wrong. My point is, this current ranking system is useless. Even India doesn't deserve to be #2. If rain and bad weather did not allow the 4th test to finish, it did not prove Pakistan is better than India. It doesn't make any sense.

Zealot Aug 22, 2016 08:23pm

@Steven Winson i agree with your point.it could be india not australia.australia got thrashed in srilanka and india won against less competetive side.pakistan record in UAE is good like india recond in india.pakistan drew test series against england.so if india can do the same or win against better sides in their backyard or even draw the series then surely they deserve the NO 1 spot.but right now wether we become NO 1 by chance or luck.at the end.WIN matter.similarly ranking matter.so time will tell who is who in overseas conditions.so right now we though being homeless is right at top.nothing else matters!!!

Roy Aug 22, 2016 08:25pm

@Sarah Hope this joy will last long.

Morad786 Aug 22, 2016 08:26pm

Great achievement.

J. Gamble Aug 22, 2016 08:26pm

@Nadeem It was just the opposite.

Sumit Patel Aug 22, 2016 08:27pm

ya congratulation for becoming first in test cricket

Sohail Khan Wazir Aug 22, 2016 08:29pm

Wow Pakistani are awesome. Proud to be a Pakistani. Credit goes to military trainers. Hats off.

Fasih Aug 22, 2016 08:32pm

Watch as those who denied Misbah the respect he deserved for six years jump on the bandwagon now! But I guess that is the beauty of this sport. All hail the the Quaid.

Yasser Aug 22, 2016 08:35pm

@J. Gamble I totally disagree with your comment. You cannot say that Pak got to No. 1 without doing anything! Give credit where credit it due.

Erum Aug 22, 2016 08:35pm

@Vivek (Indore) UNBEATEN IN TEST SERIES SINCE AUGUST 2014... BEATEN THE LIKES OF AUSTRALIA, ENGLAND, SRI LANKA u call that luck?? even pakistan dont have a home ground 2 play on... thats right on the faces of haters

vinit Aug 22, 2016 08:37pm

congratulations to pakistan team and people ,,,i hope it gives joy to all,,,,

Aks Aug 22, 2016 08:41pm

Congrats.. Well deserved...☺

Zealot Aug 22, 2016 08:42pm

Wether we become NO 1 by chance or luck..things will be clear in future.WE are proud we played fair and square.and advice to indians not to create undue fuss about ranking.ACCEPT THE REALITY AND MOVE ON....

J. Gamble Aug 22, 2016 08:43pm

@Yasser Well, in that case, credit must go to rain. It was due to rain and bad weather, Pakistan moved to the top spot.

ZaikaIndiaKa Aug 22, 2016 08:45pm

Congratulations to Pakistan on becoming No. 1

anony Aug 22, 2016 08:48pm

Heartiest congratulations to Pakistan for beating india to the Number 1 spot.

Yaayyy...

Abdulla Hussain Aug 22, 2016 08:52pm

A big congratulation to team Pakistan and all Pakistanis. Team Pakistan should try to keep this No. 1 position through their game as well.

Kamran Aug 22, 2016 08:58pm

@J. Gamble In fact credit goes to Pak team for getting to the top without playing any international cricket at home in last six years.

Cheers!!!

N_Saq Aug 22, 2016 09:03pm

A fantastic achievement! Kudos to Pak for achieving the number 1 status in test cricket without playing a single match on home soil.

Excellent job by Misbah and company. One can easily see how terrifying Pak would be if matches are played in Pak.

Naveed Aug 22, 2016 09:06pm

Wow I surely is a big achievement!

Singh.ra Aug 22, 2016 09:08pm

Congrats!

bilal Aug 22, 2016 09:08pm

@hassan you are unbelievable ! can't you cherish the moment? ! why does it have to be all negative...some people are just never happy and will never be happy no matter how well Pakistan play, when they're ranked 9th in the odi rankings, there's an issue and despite being #1, people still find issues !

Divesh Aug 22, 2016 09:09pm

Congrats Pakistan! But watch out, we're right behind :-)

Ravindran Aug 22, 2016 09:15pm

Congrats Pakistan! Well done Misbah, Younus and team.

MK Aug 22, 2016 09:16pm

@Sarah. Yes, rightly said, Unmatched record without playing cause rain is the reason of the ranking and not the effort of the Pakistani cricketers and similarly, this was the case even with Cricket World Cup, rain. Single handed it it beyond your reach.

nonymoueee Aug 22, 2016 09:20pm

Reclaiming Number test Ranking while play NO games at home is HUGE achievement

Heartiest congratulations to Pakistan.

point of view Aug 22, 2016 09:22pm

What is big deal, its by virtue of rain.

Sarah Aug 22, 2016 09:23pm

@MK You have to take bow to King Misbah,

Sarah Aug 22, 2016 09:25pm

@Roy Same test team for last 7 years, there must be something in them to reach Number 01.Take a bow before them.

Taimoor Khan Aug 22, 2016 09:27pm

Great achievement considering there is no home series for Pakistan in last 7 years, as oppose to some teams who like to go on top by playing a lot of home series.

sid.sid Aug 22, 2016 09:29pm

No1 watch test matches.... 20 20 is call of the hour

ivehadit Aug 22, 2016 09:30pm

@J. Gamble the presumption that the West Indies would do nothing but lose against any match with India is a bit arrogant, to say the least.

kktiwari Aug 22, 2016 09:33pm

1st rank but by default because WI-india match washed away, Any way congrats

Azam Kadeer Aug 22, 2016 09:58pm

if Pakistan can play at home they can stay No 1 for long time.

Sarah Aug 22, 2016 10:11pm

@kktiwari Can you please stop playing long series against West Indies,Zimbabwe? It should not be more than 1 test series.India has been playing these same lower ranked teams again and again.Actually team India deserve to be last of 10th nation because performance against England says: 4-0,3-1,2-1 both in England and at home. Most disappointing side of Test cricket hyped by its horrendous Indian media.

Rajan Aug 22, 2016 10:11pm

The England tour was Pakistan's most successful ever. Kudos to the Pakistan team and management. Even after losing second and third tests, they roared like lions at the Oval and conquered their rivals. Rajan

Dr BN Anand Aug 22, 2016 10:14pm

Congratulations Pakistan cricket team and people of Pakistan for getting to top of test ranking in world cricket. We only hope that it stays there for sometime to relish this taste of being in top of the world. That is going to be challenge to stay at top for sometime.

Desi Fan Aug 23, 2016 12:07am

The fact that the drawn match between India & West Indies promoted Pak to no 1 spot does not take away any credit from the Pak team - the rule applies to every country and all get benefitted coz of this. Credit must be given when it is due - well done Pakistan. We look forward to play a 5 test series against you someday - it will be fun to watch no 1 and 2 fight in a cricket field in a mother of all battles. - an Indian cricket fan

Push Ups Aug 23, 2016 12:58am

India has several home series in the future, so this number 1 ranking will be temporary.

Well done boys. Proud of you.

Daniyal Aug 23, 2016 01:09am

Their rise to No. 1 was built on the back of a run of unbeaten Test series since August 2014, when they were down at No. 6. Apart from the successes against England, they had also beaten Sri Lanka 2-1 in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh 1-0 in Bangladesh, and whitewashed Australia 2-0 in the UAE. Against New Zealand in the UAE in November 2014, the series during which Phillip Hughes died in Sydney, they had drawn 1-1.

Rehmat Aug 23, 2016 01:09am

Congrats Pakistanis fans and great work Misbah and Co. Misbah, you sure have proven your critics wrong.

Azhar Aug 23, 2016 01:12am

Congrats green shirts ...

Anjan Aug 23, 2016 01:27am

Congratulations to Pakistan team! A fan from India...

Vikram Sood Aug 23, 2016 01:46am

At the moment because India drew with WI, Pakistan has become number 1....Pakistan deserves the spot, but I will expect Pakistan to maintain the position.

Nasir Aug 23, 2016 01:49am

Hopefully one day we will play international cricket in Pakistan again Govt should end terrorism so we can have teams come again

usman Aug 23, 2016 01:53am

congrats team pakistan

Gaurav Aug 23, 2016 02:00am

Very well deserved!! From a downfall to this victory! That too playing a test away! Feeling proud, even if India is 2nd now! Congrats to your country! :) -Indian

Thoughtful Aug 23, 2016 03:08am

Bogus ranking. The fact of the matter is that India and Pakistan are inferior sides than Australia, South Africa, England, and N. Land. Let us see what happens to Pakistan when they visit N.Land and Australia this winter?

Saeed ahmed Aug 23, 2016 03:17am

Awesome!!!!!

MAA Aug 23, 2016 04:11am

Misbah and his team mates deserve the top ranking because they played well in tests throughout in their away home in Abu Dhabi. I personally think they did well in this testing time and proved to the world that they can be the number one. Mind it I doubt it very much whether any other team in the ICC could have achieved that under the circumstances they faced. So hearty congratulations for this feat.

Jainul Aug 23, 2016 04:27am

We should be realistic that our team became number one because of a flawed system. How can teams lose points when games get washed out? The onus is now on Captain Misbah to win on the field. Start with inviting Bangla Desh

Jainul Aug 23, 2016 04:29am

@Sarah let's look at Pakistan's recent away record against all teams Against Oz: 0-3 (2010) Against Eng: 2-2 (2016) Against SA: 0-3 (2013) (in one innings, they were rolled over for 45, lol) Against SL: 2-1 (2015) (no big deal, India also won almost 3-0) Against NZ: 1-0 (2011) (Pak will not win there now) Against Zim: 1-1 (2013) (ROTFL, hahaha) Against WI: 1-1 (2011) (hahaha, India are so bored thrashing them) So, just a win in Lanka and NZ and Pakistan fans think other teams are useless away

Rehan Aug 23, 2016 04:33am

@Adnan Ahmed How about in Australia. Provided PCB can afford it.

Tavleen Aug 23, 2016 05:18am

@J. Gamble The current ranking system is not useless, it is the best what test cricket could offer. The alternative is to not have any ranking, which I am fine with.

Tavleen Aug 23, 2016 05:19am

@Zealot Perhaps you don't realize that NZ is touring India in another few months and all India has to do is to beat them in the series and we are back to #1.

kunkolienkarsachin Aug 23, 2016 05:33am

Congratulations! Pakistan cricket team needs a great applause for achieving world no 1 status in Test Cricket. The achievement is inspite of all odds & limitations in their own country due to reasons for which they are just not responsible for.

Steven Winson Aug 23, 2016 05:52am

@Everyone who referred my name... In my country and everywhere, news highlights, are in a manner that a team that did not deserve no. 1 spot is at the top, only because other tests got washed out or some other team lost. Honestly, no offence, rank 3 was good and gradual consistence performance to 1. This is mere luck. Team would not survive a test series with true no 1 team. Anyways these ranks by luck are there for only few months. If the team is really no 1, they should prove by maintaining the spot for 6 months to 1 year...Then I am wrong else you guys got over excited by just licking the taste of no 1 spot where consistent teams are!

Zain Aug 23, 2016 06:08am

Congratulations Sons of the Soil! You have all the reasons to be proud of your achievement. Keep up the spirit high same time maintained the winning tradition. PAKISTAN ZINDABAD.

Gaurab Mishra Aug 23, 2016 07:28am

@Zulfi .....why u have left 2-0 against westindies...so india 's ratio will be ...3/7....better than Pakistan & Sri lanka.

joe Aug 23, 2016 08:09am

weldone Pakistan I am a bit surprised as to how this rating system works India were ahead in so called numbers .If last test was a draw numbers should remain where they are..?? anyway may be some time in past India may have gained to..

PakSal Aug 23, 2016 08:11am

@kktiwari Good that it washed away, otherwise you could have been fighting for 2nd place also.

India A Aug 23, 2016 08:29am

India became No. 1 not due to their win against WI but because Sri Lanka defeated Australia 3-0. Similarly Pakistan became No.1 because 4th test was drawn between Ind & WI. So Congratulation after all it is the rule of ranking some time benefit you other time harm you

Arju Aug 23, 2016 08:31am

Congrats from BD. Well done Pakistan! Special thanks to Misbah.

shail Aug 23, 2016 09:01am

Congratulation from India. The Top countries in ranking should be Our asian countries only.

Faisal Khan Aug 23, 2016 09:17am

This made my tears flow this morning. Proud of you guys, Misbah and the team!

From india Aug 23, 2016 09:27am

Congrats Pak.. You have worked hard for it. Appreciate the dedication .. Misbah is awesome. !

BD Aug 23, 2016 09:28am

@Zealot Congratulations !!

Getting #1 rank is one thing - sustaining that rank is quite another. India did it for 21 months. Now it is your turn.

Arun-KS Aug 23, 2016 09:44am

@Faisal Khan Control, Control. Difference between 1st and 7th rank teams is only of 19 points. (7th & 8th-25, 7th & 10th-84). So, any one from top 7 team have capability to replace another one. Too much emotions may cause tears of sorrow soon.

Arsalan H.Khan Aug 23, 2016 09:49am

THANK YOU MISBAH !!

Akil Akhtar Aug 23, 2016 09:55am

Even if for a day it is a tremendous achievement when there are no games at home and PCB is a mess....

mzeeshanarif Aug 23, 2016 10:07am

@J. Gamble Yes this is called luck which also contributed to make India World Champions recently so celebrate rather than crying

Salute to Pakistan's test cricket's greatest captain! You have worked wonders without any superstars in the team, barring Yunus Khan maybe. I hope when you (Misbah) retire they give you a place in PCB - a position of power and influence. I'm very sure you can do wonders in further elevating our status in test cricket. You have done us proud and please continue your services to Pakistan's test cricket.

ak Aug 23, 2016 10:48am

See thats what makes me happy about such discussions. The competition between Pakistan and India, regarding cricket that is. I wish this peaceful rivalry to continue as it will polish both the teams more and more. I mean just think about it, ratings are 111 and 110. Man am I excited. Congrats and kudos to Team Pakistan, as now we can actually say; "Boys played well". :D

KD Aug 23, 2016 10:49am

Congratulations Pakistan

khan Aug 23, 2016 10:55am

The question is how long Pakistan can manage to hold number one ranking in test cricket . By seeing the performance of India against West Indies in West Indies , we can expect /predict that Pakistan can do well in west indies also and can win the series against them, but the next 2 tours to Newzealand and Australia , beating them in there back yard will be a daunting task for Pakistan , and this is for sure Misbah will be hanging up his boots after Australia series even if his individual performance is good and want to finish his career on high

D.K. PAMNANI Aug 23, 2016 11:07am

Conrats Pakistan team for being No. 1 Test team. Some happy moments after Rio

satish Aug 23, 2016 11:24am

Congrates boys. Keep it up.

Stanley Dsouza Aug 23, 2016 11:29am

Congratulations To All Pakistanis and their fans across the world. They deserve it. For the Pakistani team's passionate fan who have been through various disappointment and heartaches, enjoy the privilege bestowed by Captain Misbah and his team to you. I hope they have a grand function of handing over the ICC Test Cricket mace either in Karachi or Lahore for the sake of their die hard fans and not in the manner of how the Australians received their Mace in Sri Lanka. Cheers from across the Border.

Sriram Aug 23, 2016 01:01pm

Heartful congratualtions! well done! hope the pakistan team can keep this rank for longer duration.

Ashim Halder Aug 23, 2016 03:15pm

Congratulations for the achievement of our neighbor.Warm regards , Ashim Halder

notrick Aug 23, 2016 04:00pm

Look at the odds Pakistan team has crossed to become Number One. They needed first Australia to loose by 0-3 and then they needed India to draw their last test match which was called off due to 4 days of rain. Any ways congrats. Lets see how much more can you handle. :)

Prapur Aug 23, 2016 04:17pm

Congratulations team Pakistan.

C++ programmer Aug 23, 2016 05:02pm

Now Celebrate this

Freedom for Kashmir Aug 23, 2016 05:45pm

@Roy We are celebrating the current ranking. Should we stop our celebration for future results?

J. Gamble Aug 23, 2016 06:53pm

ODI World Cup is held every four years, and rankings in this competition should be good for test Cricket also. Australia won the last ODI championship, so they should be at #1 in test cricket ranking. As a matter of fact, Australia is still the best team. Sri Lanka prepared pitches, suited to their spinners.

Zulfi Aug 23, 2016 08:43pm

@Gaurab Mishra

I did not consider away series against WI, Zimbabwe and BD for reasons I mentioned in my post. The litmus test for me is how Asian teams (incl. Pak, India and Sri Lanka) perform in non-Asian conditions (Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa) and vice versa

I do not regard West Indies as alien conditions. The fact remains India have lost every single away (test) series in England, Australia, NZ and SA combined. Keep deluding yourselves by winning big at home on spinning pancakes. Pakistan at least won in NZ and drew away series against England, something other teams incl. Australia, India, SA and Sri Lanka have not managed in England recently. Australia equally has a pathetic 0-9 record in Asia, hence did not deserve the no. 1 test ranking.

SAEED MASOOD Aug 23, 2016 09:43pm

Congrats Misbah and your boys...at the times of depression this very happy news has made our hearts really full of joy...Misbah now you are complete best Test Captain in the cricket world...Please play on...you are one of our cricket legends...

imran Aug 23, 2016 09:54pm

What a nice Statement by that legend . it is part of out journey not the destination...

J. Gamble Aug 23, 2016 10:00pm

@Zulfi I'm not an Australian. Australia lost #1 ranking, because they were made to play on tailor-made pitches. Sri Lanka, and India are Not good enough to beat Australia, even on their own turf. ODI rankings, based on previous ODI World Cup results as a benchmark, Australia will remain #1 until the next World Cup. Dirty politics have ruined sports culture in the Indian sub-continent. Rio Olympics is a proof.

Vasu M Aug 23, 2016 10:02pm

Congrats, Pakistan team... An Indian.

Dr. Salaria, Aamir Ahmad Aug 24, 2016 03:05am

Well done green-shirts. Keep it up and hang on tough.

Zulfi Aug 24, 2016 12:04pm

@J. Gamble

Why are u bringing up ODI performances here when the discussion is about test rankings?

Pakistan certainly need to improve in the former format. Chasing woes apart, Pak batsmen are usu. clueless when it comes to pacing an ODI innings or setting a target. Strike rotation is one of their weakest points. Good thing is that we can only go up in this format.
