SWABI: A six-member Chinese investigation team visited on Tuesday the Tarbela Dam fourth extension project site where two Chinese engineers and two Pakistani workers were killed when an under-construction section of a power house had collapsed three days ago.

The team members, accompanied by project director Bai Shengping, inspected the site and were briefed on the incident.

According to sources, the investigators also held a meeting with senior officials of Chinese construction company Sinohydro and discussed in detail all aspects of the incident.

The company’s officials told Dawn that the main objective of the investigation team was to know what actually went wrong which led to the collapse of several tons of concrete of the new power house and what measures should be taken in future to avoid such incident which not only caused financial losses but also claimed precious lives.

COMPENSATION: It was announced on Tuesday that the family of each Pakistani worker killed in the incident would be given Rs500,000 as compensation. A team has been sent to Punjab to deliver the amount.

Meanwhile, the Chinese company handed over 50 goats as Eid package to its workers at a ceremony held at the China Camp, near the Tarbela Dam power station.

The company also announced that those workers who wanted to work during Eid holidays would get Rs1,000 each per day, along with triple overtime.
