SWABI: A minor dispute between two families led to the killing of two brothers in Razaar tehsil here on Sunday, police said.

The incident occurred in Adina village in the limits of Kalu Khan police station.

It was learnt that relations between the alleged murderer and the family of the deceased brothers had deteriorated during the last few days and despite efforts made by local elders the two families did not reconcile.

Asif Khan, brother of the deceased, got an FIR registered with the Kalu Khan police station, stating that Saqi Mohammad of the same village opened fire on his brothers, killing them on the spot.

The deceased were identified as Shabir Hussain and Asim Khan. The murderer escaped the area.

POPPY ERADICATED: Swabi Deputy Commissioner Matiullah Khan told Dawn on Sunday the district administration had destroyed poppy over 20 kanal of land in Gadoon Amazai region during the ongoing campaign.

He said the campaign was carried out in villages of Mangal Chayi, Chennai, Dalori and Dewal Garhi.

Meanwhile, officials said the three-day operation concluded without any resistance from the people.

The police accompanied by revenue officials did not face any hurdles, they added.

They said before launching the action, the district administration had conducted a survey in the inaccessible areas where the poppy was cultivated through the revenue staff.

The revenue officials also obtained the names of the people who violated the government ban on growing the crop.

It is to be recalled that the district administration destroyed poppy crop over 34 kanal of land in 2012, but no operation was carried out in the following years, which allowed the people to grow poppy without any fear.

During an anti-poppy operation in 1984, seven people were killed. Afterwards, the government established the Gadoon Amazai Industrial Estate to draw the people away from cultivating poppy.
