RAWALPINDI: A ruling party candidate for LG elections along with his five companions was booked on the charge of attacking a police patrol in Dhamial on Sunday night.

Asad Mehmood, the PML-N candidate for the slot of chairman Union Council 86, and five other people were going home when they spotted a police patrol conducting random checking of vehicles.

Head constable Zahid Mehmood in his complaint stated that he along with constables Shoaib, Irfan, Adil and Yasir Mehmood were on duty at Bank Colony police picket on Dhamial Road. The police stopped two motorcycle riders on suspicion and asked them to produce the registration book. However, they did not have it.

In the meantime, six people riding a jeep pulled up and one of them sitting in the front seat, who was later identified as Asad Mehmood Numbardar, started shouting at the police to remove the picket.

“Asad started abusing us and asked us to remove the picket saying LG elections are being held these days,” said the complainant.

The head constable alleged that Asad thrashed constable Shoaib and later five other people joined him and tore his (Shoaib’s) uniform and beat up other officials.

The two motorcycle riders were also forcibly taken away by Asad, he added.

The incident was brought to the notice of SP Ghayas Gul who ordered registration of a case against the six people.

When contacted, SP Gul told Dawn that the city police officer had ordered an inquiry.

“If the accused are found guilty, the police will arrest them.”
