Stability returning to Pakistan due to army operations: General Raheel

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif on Tuesday said that stability is returning to Pakistan as a result of army operations and that a peaceful environment in and around Pakistan is the army's "top priority".
The army chief's statement was posted to Twitter on Tuesday by Director General Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Asim Bajwa.
General Raheel was addressing army officers in Bahawalpur to pay his tribute to their resilience, professionalism and sacrifices in their ongoing operation against terrorism, the statement said,

DG ISPR quoted the army chief as saying that focus cannot be taken away from targeting terrorism in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and breaking militant links to the rest of the country.

General Raheel also said "no challenge is insurmountable", adding that the youth is Pakistan's "greatest asset" and must be "encouraged and honed".

Fata is a semi-autonomous tribal region in northwestern Pakistan. Fata's regions are also home to religious extremist organisations including Al Qaeda. Intensifying their efforts to counter militants, security forces upped their action in the region through operation Zarb-i-Azb, Khyber-One and Khyber-Two.

Last month, General Raheel called for making collective efforts to give the next generation a terrorism-free and prosperous Pakistan and to provide a conducive environment which could help them apply their knowledge and creativity to achieve optimum effects for national growth.

The General is absolutely right. In undeveloped societies of the third world a strong state is essential for social harmony. we have seen in the Middle East what happens when the strong state is replaced by democratic pretenders. Anarchy and chaos, accompanied by senseless violence and the slaughter of the innocents results. It would be in the best interest of all concerned if the military takes over the running of the country and enforces the rule of law with a firm hand - something the democratic civilian weaklings are utterly incapable of.

Gen Raheel and corporate Commanders, thank you for the army operation to rid the country of miscreants.
Capture the wicked trouble makers and hang em high for all to see.
When the country is calm and peacefull, investment will return.
Expatriate Pakistani Baby Boomers ( new retirees ) will want to return home and buy flats to spend western winters in Pakistan, they will spend upto five months of the year, a great boost to the local economy.
As well, they will buy flats, which will generate a construction boom.
This in turn will create a boost in sales of home appliances.
We can manufacture these appliances, while placing a ban on their import.
All this will jump start the economy.

@MG. Dear do we really need democracy in our defense issues? I think democracy should be involved on in financial, administrative & diplomatic matters which they are trying to do since last year. I think this suited best for all stack holders in this nation.

Im not convinced, terrorists are probably just hiding and waiting for army to leave. Eliminating terrorists and curbing extremists will take generations. You can kill people but you can't kill an ideology.

Pakistani armed forces truly deserve a full credit for their sincere efforts and sacrifices to restore peace in previously Taliban insurgency ridden areas. It's on record that govt and some key political and religious parties kept resisting army operation and as a result allowed extremists to gorw and inflict crippling losses to entire nation, which will take a very long time to heal and for some the healing may never happen. If it wasn't for Army's strong will, our government would have kept wasting the time and valuable lives in the name of dialog with mindless extremists. We as a nation fully support armed forces and are thankful for their efforts for peace!

It is first time in my 55 years that I feel hope and that is because of Raheel Sharif. I just request him and his fellows to give as much weightage to corruption at the top. Pakistan can not go forward if both financial and militant terrorisms are not finished. How is it fair that 0,2 % of the nation are stopping us to progress due to their coruption and that too in the day light. Every one know who is looting how but even then the culprit speaks as if he is the biigest Massiha. I just just (strongly) wish the general could find a way to make NAB independently functional. For this nation he might be the chosen one, even when I know that many (so called) democrates won't like me to say that.

@Pak patriot , Sure you are right but white color corruption, specially at the top, and more specially those who are looting with both hands must be taken care of before any hope starts to build. It is a funny time, now the corrupt do their job even when whole the nation is watching and questioning but they just stay mum and go on with more intensity. What ex-president has done to this country while all the power center let him do it for 7 years, and the way the two big ones have protected each other can't just be called simple corruption. Why are they hanging the small criminals? Why when the big ones still own us.

Pakistan army should punish Religious terrorist organizations roaming in cities and causing hate among masses like Lashkar jhangvi, ASWJ or SSP of laal aside type maulana. Without addressing cities and towns issue of terrorism is not over.

Praising the national military is natural and good for the over all moral but promoting martial rule is a scary phenomeon and not good for the region as a whole. Deriding democracy seems to be in fashion in Pakistan. I hope the winds change before it is too late.

I will try and make my point again albeit rather tamely..
Democracy is hard, does not work sometimes, it takes time but it is the only proven method to govern a country. Do not abandon that by being too harsh on the system. You may need to elect better people but the system will work eventually. If there was no militancy or perceived foreign threat then the dependency on the military will also be lesser. The military in any developed country works on the behest of the political leadership and does not have its own agenda.

@MG Try to be realistic, nowhere in the whole world a situation like that can be handled by any civilian government, if the civilian government would have allowed the military in the beginning right when the problem started or such action would have been taken much earlier many innocent lives would have been saved. It looks like you worry more about the corrupt politicians than the safety of the whole nation.

For the chaos that political class creates, army is helpful in bringing back some order. After the chaos goes down...The civilian govt must take over. Historically, somehow at different times it back fired for different reasons! These businessmen at the top of the govt. are counterproductive. They just don't seem to connect with the aspirations of general public!

@Canada You are right in saying that"terrorists are probably just hiding and waiting for army to leave" but the good thing that I see in this operation is: there are many pro Taliban people who are not that hard core or supporting them for the sake of sharing some power.
Firstly, Taliban must be weakened to persuade this lot to come back and send message to the general public that there is no heaven on the other side of the wall.
Secondly, some of hardcore extremist for sure are being killed making them even weaker.
Thirdly, many Taliban have found relatively softer places in some other parts of the world to carry on their agenda. So many already have started migrating there instead of hitting the walls in Pakistan. If All that will enable our people and state institutions to deal with remaining lot on better conditions. We must have to stop religious proliferation in education, politics and other walks of life, though.

The military operation in FATA has caused inconvenience to the Taliban/Al Qaeda operatives and they have simply moved away from the Waziristan to mainland or North Waziristan. The terrorists are well/ alive and still attacking the security forces. If stability has returned to Pakistan why we still facing attacks by terrorists in various parts of the country? Yesterday Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations in Peshawar said a security forces' convoy was passing by when it came under attack. No security personnel were injured in the blast, and the van also remained unhurt. However, two passers-by sustained injuries. if our security forces are being attacked in mainland, it means we have a long way to go.

Our civilian and military leadership has always maintained that a stable Pakistan is in the best interest of the region. No one can deny that terrorism has hit Pakistan hard and thousands of innocent Pakistanis have lost their lives in this war. It is an encouraging sign that the military operation has broken the back of the terrorists and stability is returning. We congratulate the Pakistani security forces on their success against the terrorists and we assure our support till complete peace is restored in the region.
