Efforts to promote industries

KARACHI: Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Sheikh Aftab Ahmed has said that the government is making all-out efforts to promote export-based industries.

During a visit to the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) head office, the minister emphasised the need for reviving sick industrial units for quick results.

The minister said that all stakeholders are being taken on board for an early resolution of issues and for framing a workable policy and strategy.

Sheikh Aftab Ahmed instructed the officials of EPZA to make efforts for attracting local and foreign investment in export processing zones.

Earlier, EPZA chairman Dr Mohammad Khawar Jameel gave an overview of the operations at different zones working under EPZA.

During his visit to Pakistan Steel here on Tuesday, Aftab Ahmed assured maximum support for the revival and expansion of the mills.

While assuring the maximum support for the revival and expansion of the mills (PSM), the plight of the employees must also be given due consideration. More than 15000 employees are without salary for the months of Nov, Dec and January. Since 2008, the officers have not been allowed any increase in the salary announced by the government in annual budgets. During the last 24 years, more than two thousand of them have been given just one promotion. The gratuity has not been paid to the retired employees since April 2013. The government, the ministries and the higher authorities must pay attention to this deplorable misery of the employees and devise such mechanism that the employees are paid their wages and dues regularly and timely.

@Mujahid Tabrez Qadri PSM is a huge drain on public finances, time to put it out of its misery. What are they producing, 30% capacity , so 300,000 tonnes, 15,000 employees ! 2,000 have been given just one promotion, promotion is based on merit and success of a company, demotion would be more appropriate.
