KARACHI: Amid confusion over whether the government had banned the Jamaatud Dawa, its chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed said on Saturday that restrictions were “nothing new” to the group and that JuD would continue with its public welfare and education projects.

“It has been going on over the past six years,” he said while answering a question at a press conference with Mufti Mohammad Naeem at Jamia Binnoria Al Alamia in the Site area.

Read: Haqqani network and JuD banned

“The courts have given us a clean chit and declared us as innocent and respected citizens of the country. But the media is exaggerating the six-year-old curbs imposed on JuD by the United Nations after the recent Foreign Office (FO) briefing.”

Earlier this week, the FO avoided confirming that JuD and the Haqqani network had been banned. Foreign Office spokesperson Tasnim Aslam said at a media briefing that JuD and some other organisations had been included in the sanctions list of the UN and Pakistan, being a member of the world body, was obliged to act against such outfits.

Hafiz Saeed said his organisation was actively involved in dozens of welfare projects benefiting poor people. “We are not going to abandon these projects.”

He said a certain class and group were targeting JuD to promote a certain agenda “but let me tell you that we are true Pakistanis and will defend the land and its ideology.”

Earlier, the JuD chief met Mufti Naeem to invite him to participate in his organisation’s “Hurmat-i-Rasool (PBUH) march” to be held on Sunday in protest against the publication of controversial caricatures in a French magazine.

Mufti Naeem expressed concern over the government’s National Action Plan for countering terrorism and said every Pakistani wanted an end to terrorism and supported sensible steps of the government. “But one cannot allow a one-sided action against madressahs.

“We will appreciate the government if it targets terrorists and their handlers but treating all the seminaries in the same way is unjustified,” he said.

Look: Entire media involved in glorification of extremists

Pady Jan 25, 2015 08:59am

As long as such people exists in Pakistan there are no hopes for progress. Such people only promote fanaticism and intolerance in the name of lslam.

KafirMusafir Jan 25, 2015 09:00am

Pakistan has a small problem in its hands. But is has always dealt with it in its own unique way.... the Pakistani Way.

Zak Jan 25, 2015 09:13am

A kashmiri fighting for the freedom of kashmir from brutal indian occupation. He is to Kashmiri's as the Chandra Boase is to India.

Dr Sarkar Jan 25, 2015 09:14am

In this world only Pakistan protects hardcore terrorists. He is no way a Muslim or a Pakistani but sheltered damaging the reputation of millions of honest and innocent Pakistanis.

Zahid.USA Jan 25, 2015 09:28am

Dear Mr Hafiz Hussain, the whole Pakistani Nation knows all about your welfare work and your organization. You have done a plenty of great work already. Because of people like you Mr Hussain, people are point fingers at Madrassah system. Please forgive Pakistani people and turn of your microphone as we are getting sick of your speeches filled with hate and division.

Emjay Jan 25, 2015 09:35am

"“The courts have given us a clean chit.."

That's the problem... our courts.

Banda Jan 25, 2015 09:37am

Please we are done with these kinds of Muslims

Srini Jan 25, 2015 09:37am

Poor Pakistan is under tremendous pressure and confusion to BAN openly to its own baby.

Balle Jan 25, 2015 09:46am

@Zak Then why do you kill people in Balochistan? Don't you think they are also fighting in same way?

Shehzad Jan 25, 2015 09:52am

Ok. Then arrest him. We need to clear Pakistan from all these types of hate mongers

Sunil Jan 25, 2015 10:01am

Ban of JUD is a white wash, it will continue to promote terror under the cover of shadows.

Tushar Jan 25, 2015 10:04am

Unfortunately people in developing countries hope of getting good education and making the most of it to live a worthy life whereas some people in pakistan make the most of the poor education problem in the country and make their lives easy and comfortable.

yugandar Jan 25, 2015 10:22am

@Zak -- Yeah right !! When he starts bombing pakistan don't say he his India's agent.

Roger Jan 25, 2015 10:23am

Kashmir belongs to India Send rest of Kashmiris to Pakistan indian if they do not like to live there and problem is over No need to fight and lose human lives and money It's simple Raja hari signed to stay with india Simple facts

Sonny Afridi Jan 25, 2015 10:26am

He is a patriot and he's innocent. Nothing will happen to him.

Sonny Afridi Jan 25, 2015 10:27am

@Zak that is the only reason india is scared of him - because he gives speeches about Kashmiri liberation struggle. He has a freedom of expression and courts must respect that.

Yawar Jan 25, 2015 10:31am

"Hafiz Saeed said his organisation was actively involved in dozens of welfare projects benefiting poor people." How innocent! In fact it sounds very similar to Saudi Arabia's motive for financing extremist Sunni madrassahs in Pakistan from the Zia era until now.

Anil Nair Jan 25, 2015 10:34am

@Zak. I am one of those indians who cringe at the indian trolls who seems to infest here, but I do have to interject here.

Chandra Bose unlike Hafeez Saeed, never supported Mass murdering thugs who intentionally kills innocents.

I don't hate Pakistanis, because a lot of you guys arejust trying to make a living and enjoy life.

But it irritates me, when people like Zak, on both sides of the border tries to inflate their self-worth by a false sense of superiority.

This goes for my compatriots who troll here as well. For a lot of Pakistanis, The Indians here maybe are the only ones they get to talk to.

I hope that's not the only idea of Indians Dawn readers gets to know.

To me, this news paper provides an alternative viewpoint to what I read.

It's just irks me when people who has the ability to access internet and dissolve borders just engage in this behaviour

sorry for my rant :-)

Jawad U Rahman Jan 25, 2015 10:34am

@Zak : But, that's not what he is saying he is doing. Isn't it misleading to the people of Pakistan to use a charity front to carry on violence and terrorism?

Xoxo Jan 25, 2015 10:37am

@Zak

There a few differences in Netaji and Hafiz:

  1. Netaji wasn't fighting in name of religion.
  2. Netaji wasn't killing innocent civilians and bombing hotels.
  3. Netaji wasn't calling his operation charity and using the raised money to kill innocent people.
  4. Netaji wanted to free his homeland from people from occupiers who came from 1000 of miles away and had nothing in common in culture of history.
  5. Netaji tried for teacupful way to get freedom, he was a senior member of congress and resort to build army when it became clear that British won't follow on their promised.
  6. Netaji wanted India for all Indians, and not Kashmir for only Kashmiri Muslims who support Pakistan.
  7. Netaji wanted freedom for his country and not get it subjugated to another country. That is what will happen to Kashmir (it will become part of Pakistan or sold to China).
Riasti Jan 25, 2015 10:39am

Who so ever speaks loudly for the implementation of UN resolutions about occupied muslim Kashmir is a criminal in the eyes of India.

Courts of pakistan can not punish some one on some one's wish.

Superior Courts of Pakistan has given him a clean chit but Pak government is under pressure from his donors , who want to please India for their own benefits.

Government of Pakistan should register a case against the Indian Colonel who was involved in the case of burning " Samjhota Express " and demand him from India to counter such false pressures.

islooboy Jan 25, 2015 10:41am

he was declared innocent by pakistani courts just like modi was declared innocent by indian courts

islooboy Jan 25, 2015 10:43am

@Sunil one mans terrorist is another man,s freedom fighter

karachi Wally Jan 25, 2015 10:44am

Why would he be moved, his guys are moving freely with guns. We all have to get up from our seats and move a bit to shake him and all the others like him. Pakistan PLEASE move now or you will be immovable forever!

Amarnath Jan 25, 2015 10:51am

@Zak : you should gear the way kashmiri leaders, those who run govt., outside govt., as well as liberation leaders distance themselve from this Hafeez saeed. just wact some of their interviews on youtube. I don't know what twisted logic you hold to be praising a man who has blood of so many humans.

hyat Jan 25, 2015 10:54am

Pakistan should deal with India on Kashmir and solve otherwise this problem will exist forever if not Jud then Kud, if not kud then sud, bla bla bla. this is all because of indian injustices and Pakistani rulers coward behavior then these groups will exist in any name whatever you call it.same way i suggest to both countries leadership no one can win over other. thats mean pak and india should work together and solve their problems. kashmir is not a big problem to solve. make kashmir ruled by both countries. visa free for pak and indians to go there and have fun. i promise you we will be better than europe or any other country in the world.

SKChadha Jan 25, 2015 11:00am

Hafeez Sayeed SAHIB is a respectable citizen in Pakistan. Whatever GOP say ban or No ban, the Establishment should go on protecting him.

NORI Jan 25, 2015 11:02am

Pakistan argues for implementing UN resolutions on Kashmir, but won't bother if they are about good terrorists.Classical case of cherry picking. Anyways, it's proved that JuD is not banned and even if it's banned, its for JuD, not for Hafiz Saeed.

Sivanesan Jan 25, 2015 11:09am

@Sonny Afridi Does it applicable to any one who speaks the independence of Baluchistan. You already controlled part of Kashmir. You are unable to provide good roads, education to all children, unable to fight extremism. People who migrated to Pakistan are still calling them as mogajirs. But there is no such identity created for people migrated to India. Why none of the Pakistanis worried about their own problems instead they worried lot on international events. There is something beyond kashmir is there. We are able to work together as brother and sisters in countries outside our region. Why not in our own house.

Mahen Jan 25, 2015 11:13am

@Sonny Afridi Speeches for Kashmiri liberation struggle in POK?

Roger Jan 25, 2015 11:14am

@Zak Subhad Bose was exterminated by British.

Mahen Jan 25, 2015 11:14am

@islooboy Yes one mans freedom fighter is the worlds terrorist!

Sunil Jan 25, 2015 11:15am

@islooboy So you call TTP freedom fighters?

Tanveer Jan 25, 2015 11:16am

@islooboy Just as TTP seen by Indians

Roger Jan 25, 2015 11:17am

@islooboy Violence always fails, it never wins. Ask Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi. Did they throw stones at the British and shot and kill innocents ? Well, they were freedom fighters too.

Ravi Dallas TX Jan 25, 2015 11:20am

@islooboy : Then let Pakistan officially declare him as the freedom fighter and send that message to India. Why give all these excuses and lies...

jay Jan 25, 2015 11:23am

@islooboy this is the same mentality that has brought Pakistan where it is now,, a total shamble..wud u say the same about BLA ?

Balle Jan 25, 2015 11:24am

@Zak Didn't he openly say that India will see lot of Mumbai like terrorist attacks? He is and would be terrorist in eye of world minus Pakistan.

rkn Jan 25, 2015 11:28am

@Zak Like you cannot by any means justify killing of 140 innocent kids in Peshawar, you cannot justify the killing of 160+ innocent people during Mumbai siege on 26/11 for which JUD is directly or indirectly responsible, as we all know. What freedom fighting are you talking about, its pure hatred at work, wake-up and clear your mindset.

amrut Jan 25, 2015 11:30am

That is great. A new dictionary. "Welfare and education". Yes. Welfare of terrorists and educating them as to how to carry out subversive activities in other countries and at times in one's own country. Long Live Hafiz Saeed!! Judges and Government Law officers are scared of you. Politicians are there to support you. You can continue to fool the public and your Government will keep on denying everything. GOD is there to take "care" of you!!!. Wait for the judgment day

Khan Jan 25, 2015 11:34am

@Zak learn your history first bhai

rkn Jan 25, 2015 11:36am

@islooboy So one who kills innocent people, little kids (like in Peshawar) a freedom fighter...? Please clear your confusion... I think this is the problem in Pakistan today, you folks are unsure on who a terrorist really is and in the process many hardcore terrorists escape your system.

Gp65 Jan 25, 2015 11:41am

@islooboy "he was declared innocent by pakistani courts just like modi was declared innocent by indian courts"

Well your courts have been proved singularly capable of conicting a single terrorist becuase the prosecution who is afraid of terrorists makes weak case.

In India in the Gujarat riots case 33 Hindus including a minister were convicted including of course with Muslim mischief makers because contrary o what you have been told, plenty of Hindus were also killed in those riots, the question of deliberately making a weak case on Modi does not even arise given that Congress was in center for 10 years and saw Modi as a key political opponent.

So please stop with the false equivalence.

@islooboy "@Sunil one mans terrorist is another man,s freedom fighter"

Someone hat kills innocent women and children is not a freedom fighter. He is a terrorist. Neither Bhagat Singh nor George Washington nor Netaji Bose target innocent women and children.

khanm Jan 25, 2015 11:49am

The defiant ones...Shall I tell you what the real evil is? To cringe to the things that are called evils, to surrender to them our freedom, in defiance of which we ought to face any suffering.

Sid Jan 25, 2015 12:26pm

@islooboy ...... That saying is so mis interpreted and mi used. Freedom fighters do not go and kill civilians of the people they want freedom from. They attack the state and instruments of state like military and police. Killing innocent civilians has alway been labeled as barbarism even in medieval times.

M. SaleemRaikodi Jan 25, 2015 12:34pm

A whiff of fresh air Nair Bhai. No wonder, if any enemy takes the views from the trolls in these coloumns as a sample for an attack plan, they already achieved it without spending on espionage and spy operation.

Usman Jan 25, 2015 12:47pm

I think he is the same person who was hiring young guys to be recruited in Lashkar Taiba to fight in Kashmir and when they were killed, Lashkar taiba was calling parents of deceased boys by saying:

"Congratulations you son has martyred in the Kashmir"

Xyz Jan 25, 2015 01:02pm

@islooboy that's such a hogwash statement. A freedom fighter does not murder civilians. A freedom Fighter either fights through speeches and protests and spreading the message or by fighting the armed forces. A terrorist attacks civilians and engages in murder

raj Jan 25, 2015 01:04pm

how do you think india has closed his eye towards terrorist group in Pakistan . india is clearly monitor what they are doing in Pakistan and which kind of ban is imposed on this type group .

raj Jan 25, 2015 01:10pm

If Pakistan has adopted this type policies and remains support. Then india is capable to take strong action against such type of element who are dangerous of humanity and civilization. India has lot of resource which can be more benefit to Pakistan but Pakistan has always remain adopted policies from 1948 and many time , he is trying to capture Kashmir region . But time has gone whenever any country can capture area of another country. In modern days , any country not ready loose his area against any country which may be china or Pakistan . So every country should remain stop policies and work for progress .

Reader Jan 25, 2015 01:12pm

He is innocent until proven guilty. The ban on JuD is a blunder committed by GoP. Rule of Law must prevail. Let Indians say whatever they want

Adventurer Jan 25, 2015 01:16pm

Of course not and no need to worry about it. As he has complete confidence in his handlers. Rather it is them who needs him for their nefarious deeds.

A shah Jan 25, 2015 01:43pm

Please hang this guy

A shah Jan 25, 2015 01:44pm

Supporting him makes it easy for India to have the world back them

Last Word Jan 25, 2015 01:50pm

What sort of a message on fighting terrorism is Pakistan giving to the whole world by allowing the chief of a banned terrorists organisation a free run especially when Obama and Modi are discussing counter-terrorism in the neighbourhood ?

rahul1 Jan 25, 2015 02:19pm

@Zak That's why J&K voted 70%+ in democratic elections!!!

rahul1 Jan 25, 2015 02:22pm

@Xoxo Another major difference - Netaji did not have Petro dollars nor did he have Govt Support unlike Saeed

Ample reverence for Saudis Jan 25, 2015 02:24pm

Yes Sir thumbs up Leaders are habitual of being pressurized and capitulating to foreign powers!

Parvez Jan 25, 2015 02:31pm

When they have the government tacitly on their side .......why should they worry ?

Janu Not-German Jan 25, 2015 02:33pm

the punch Hafiz saeed is showing is in govt's face. do somehing!

justice Jan 25, 2015 02:57pm

@zak there are lots of issues to discuss Pakistan should focus on first provide power to all citizens of the nation and then think about other issues. If you don't care much about your people how can you justify others

ajeet Jan 25, 2015 03:34pm

@Riasti This is the most stupid argument I have heard and no amount of Peshawar school incidents will open the eyes of persons who don't use their brain. Samjautha express Incident happened in India and the perpetrators are in Jail. Mumbai attack was by Pakistanis and the perpetrators are freely roaming around and addressing rallies.

Rashid Sultan Jan 25, 2015 04:28pm

@Sonny Afridi Until General Raheel decides otherwise. Be warned. He is back in a couple of days. The days of terror in any form roaming our streets is over, Kashmir or elsewhere as targets for them.

Amarnath Jan 25, 2015 04:30pm

hafeez saeed unmoved. governor killer qadri too unmoved. lawyers afraid to put him to trail.

these two are tied. it is easy to come to a basic conclusion about where hafeez saeed stands vis-a-vis Qadri

Meet Jan 25, 2015 05:01pm

@Sonny Afridi wat about freedom of expression of balochis

muzammil Jan 25, 2015 05:10pm

Jud is a strategic asset and ally of pak army in a hostile region filled with anti state forces.jud to pakistan is just like blackwater is to usa, rss to india, hezbollah to iran. Army will never give up on Jud who have never harmed Pakistan in any way. Anybody hoping otherwise

kayenn Jan 25, 2015 05:12pm

He is the biggest terrorist being sheltered by the establishment. He has a prize money of US$ 10 million on his head - All the world powers, including UN thinks he is a terrorist except Pakistan. He is a good terrorist today, being used as a proxy by the state to implement its foreign policy. The taliban of today were good terrorists in 80s and 90s. Now the GOP is hunting them with ZeA operations. Hafiz Sayed will become a bad terrorists tomorrow. Wait and see. There will unfortunately be more APS, Peshawar and Mumbais.... God bless us all

mba Jan 25, 2015 05:13pm

By the way. Someone knows, who actually rules Pakistan? One more question ladies and gentlemen: Do we Pakistanis (and our government, whatever it is) have a clear Definition for a Terrorist?

ASH40(US) Jan 25, 2015 06:09pm

What will happened even after banning these...Pakistan banned LeT and JeM a decade before but they are still freely operating from its well established bases....

Ahmed Jan 25, 2015 08:07pm

@Zak He was born in Sargodha Punjab. He is not a Kashmiri.

Ahmed Jan 25, 2015 08:10pm

I am hoping his education drive is that of moderation, respect for others and openness in the society and not the extremism. I am hoping his education drive is on tolerance and not on hate.

Abdul Malik Jan 25, 2015 10:42pm

Ban these terrorist. There are enough proof to justify their ban. The Pakistan government must not be scared of these good for nothing clerics. Just look at their faces; from no angle they look like peace loving law abiding citizens. The very fact they are challenging the ban speaks volumes of their intentions.

Dastak Jan 26, 2015 01:22am

I'd think if you're an Indian administration you actually prefer Hafeez Sayed not being banned or censored in Pakistan. He openly coming on Pakistani television, press conferences and public rallies and spewing anti-India/anti-American venom, making threats against India, helps only enhance the global perception that Pakistan id a safe haven for (UN-recognized) terrorists and that Pakistan government is incapable of fighting against terrorism in its own country.

deva Jan 26, 2015 02:01am

@Zak he will take u down and not more then that. look palestine in last 40 years + with international support not got full freedom from tiny state israel.

Sonny Afridi Jan 26, 2015 03:02am

@Mahen there is no anti Pakistanresistance in Azande Kashmir so why should he. Kashmiris are with us

A concerned Pakistani Jan 26, 2015 03:55am

Do these faces represent the Pakistan Qaide Azam fought to create?

omni Jan 26, 2015 04:52am

Does anyone know how much money he has?

Vibhu Jan 26, 2015 05:08am

Hafiz is big liability for Pakistan that equals to Nuke liability, in the eyes of western world.

A shah Jan 26, 2015 05:29am

Look the truth is Kashmiris will always aide with India and never back us. In fact the whole of kashmir will be better off with India

Zak Jan 26, 2015 11:23am

@rahul1 under occupation, elections are a drama. Let UN hold one, see the results.

minority Jan 26, 2015 04:27pm

@Zak He is fighting for anything but freedom. He is full of hate and vengence that he lets loose through maiming and killing innocent Pakistanmis in the name of Islam. His personal vendetta turned into a war that is being fuelled by misguided youth without any prespective in life. He should be hanged....period.

Zak Jan 26, 2015 04:33pm

@Ahmed of kashmiri descent, parents were kashmiri.

Harsh Jan 27, 2015 05:49pm

@Zak : Keep fighting. The fact is we will never give Kashmir. You can write the same comments till you get old.
