NEW DELHI: India's Mars Orbiter Mission on Wednesday successfully entered orbit around the Red Planet on its first attempt, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced.
“India has successfully reached Mars. Congratulations to all, to the entire country... history has been created today,” Modi said from the Indian Space Research Organisation's mission control in south India from where the mission was televised live nationwide.
The success of the mission— named Mangalyaan (Mars-craft) — after its 10-month journey was touted by Modi as a showcase for the country's home-grown and low-cost space technology.
“I have said it in the past too, the amount our scientists have spent on this mission is even less than what they spend in making Hollywood movies,” he said in his televised addressed to the mission scientists.
At just $74 million, the mission is less than the estimated $100 million budget of the sci-fi blockbuster Gravity.

India's successful mission to the Red Planet sees it join an elite club that includes United States, Russia and Europe.
The mission plans to study the planet's surface and scan its atmosphere for methane, which could provide evidence of some sort of life form.
The probe is expected to circle Mars for six months, about 500 kilometres (310 miles) from its surface. Its scientific instruments will collect data and send it back to Earth.
“We have prevailed, not everyone gets success in their missions... we got it in our very first attempt. ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) put out this spacecraft in a record time of only three years, every Indian is proud of you,” Modi said.
Experts say the mission's main aim is to showcase India's budget space technology and hopefully snatch a bigger share of the $300-billion global space market.
The mission's cost is just a fraction of NASA's MAVEN spacecraft which successfully began orbiting the fourth planet from the sun on Sunday.
India has so far launched 40 satellites for foreign nations, since kickstarting its space programme five decades ago. But China launches bigger satellites.
Critics of the programme say a country that struggles to feed its people adequately and where roughly half have no toilets should not be splurging on space travel.
Mars missions: Successes and failures
Getting a spacecraft to orbit Mars is a complex mission that few countries have attempted, and even fewer have achieved.
The former Soviet Union made the world's first attempt in 1960, but the satellite didn't get far from Earth.
The United States had the first successful mission four years later, when a flyby satellite, Mariner 4, beamed 21 images of the red planet's surface back to Earth.
Since then, more than half of the 41 attempts have failed for myriad reasons including rocket malfunction, radio failure, fuel troubles and missed landings.
Here is a breakdown of successful and failed attempts:
US: 15 successful attempts, 4 failures
USSR: 2 successful attempts, 14 failures
Russia: 2 failures
European Space Agency: 1 success
Japan: 1 failure
India: 1 success

congrats isro you have done it. we are proud of you.
Well done India. Congratulations!!! This is the area where we should compete....
This is an example of supreme expertise of Indian scientists and technologies. Heads off to you all.
We should feel proud as India has broken the supeririority of west in space. First asian country and first in the world to reach the marse on its maiden attempt.
Many conversations to India!!! Asia proud on you
Proud of you,India!!!
This is great ! Congratulations .... Proud ... Very Proud
Congratulations India
Congrats INDIA.
Congratulations great job! really great!
This is a success for South Asia.
Congratulations India!! Let whole humanity have benefits from this.
Well done. Keep it up!
A flawless mission executed by ISRO. In spite of what the detractors say this mission was worth it just for the soft power shot in the arm that India will receive from this mission. In real terms, ISROs commercial operations may see a jump in earnings because of this mission's success. Thus, offsetting the cost of the mission and the space program.
WOOOOOOWWWWW !!!!!
India is doing what futuristic countries do.
Hindustan has proved that, they are second to none. It's an proud moment for all Hindustanis as well as for entire Sub continent and Asians.
Million thanks to ISRO and Hindustani leadership who supported this Mangalyan Mission.
Proud to be an Hindustani. Jai Hind.
Learning moment for us. . . Congratulation Indian for such achievement.
Many Congratulations...... we expect more of you.
Well done India!!
Congratulations to India. You have made all our south Asians brothers and sisters proud !
Congratulations to the scientists. The world needs more such positive news.
Congrats to India and the scientists for a successful demonstration of technology and know-how.
Great day for India. The morning brought the dawn of a new era. India becomes the first country to successfully send its spacecraft into Mars orbit in its first attempt and that too on a shoe string budget. The PM was there with the scientists of ISRO to witness history being made. In country where one is hard pressed to find a success story, it is heartening to see that at least our scientists are toiling hard. Take a bow, my brothers and sisters at ISRO. This success means a lot. Will go a long way in establishing brand equity of the "made in India " product.
@Mahmood Thanks Mahmood Bhai. Instead of killing each other, we could beat the world if we put our strength and brain at positive goals like this.Events like this really pull up the morale of the nation.
Congrats to ISRO and India. Proves that any nation, , not just rich ones, can aspire to success in space.
Congratulation!. While India, despite its own corruption, is progressing , we are still busy in sit-ins and sorting out election results. Even if there was some corruption in elections, as in Indian elections also, there is a time to move on for the betterment of Nation and try to improve it in future. These issues should be resolved inside the Parliament and not outside the Parliament.
This is a proud moment for all Asians especially those from the Indian subcontinent. Instead of figtingwith each other to the delight of the foreigners we should all join and develop our subcontinent.
Well done ISRO you have done country proud again
Very happy to see comments congratulating India. I hope to see the day when we progress together leaving the past behind... Congratulations to all of us.
Very very proud to be an Indian Sikh girl, especially when the budget for mission was mere 10% of the cost of the MAVEN mission to Mars by USA.
Out of 51 missions by all space agencies to the Mars so far, 30 missions have failed and only 21 were successful.
Great achievement in a very first attempt. Congrats.....
As an Indian i must honestly say most Indian newspaper is owned by corporates and they cut corners,it seems in Pakistan corporate still have less control in news business than that of India. Dawn is really remarkable, and driven by the passion of investigative journalism.
Buraaaaa A great day for India. With all odds ISRO done it again
Bravo well done. Do it for peace and forvall humanity
well done india only country in world who success in its first attempt to concure mars
Congrats ISRO :) n feling proud to be Indian and ofcourse Asian :)
as an Indian reader who regularly reads Dawn to learn about Pakistan and who believes in learning about the other perspective.
I see the success of this mission ans not only an Indian achievement, but an achievement for Humanity and for science.
addressing my Pakistani friends here ( I do hope you aalso consider me your friend =] )
what I hope in the future, if nothingelse is that Pakistani and Indian scientists can collaborate and learn and develop. Pakistani scientists just need nurture, you guys lack no talent, are intelligent.
Abdus Salam is one of my heroes. Given the encouragement, nurture and exposure there can be another Abdus Salam.
And if India can nurture more of it's scientists it can produce another C.V. Raman.
Thank you for the congratulations :)
India becomes the first nation to arrive in Mars' orbit on its first attempt and the first Asian country to reach the Red Planet. Congratulations ISRO and India. You make all south Asians proud !
Hope for humanity, progress for mankind, advancement of Asia and my India a shining star...
Many Congratulations to fellow Asians
Well Done team at ISRO and congratulations to Indian people and the government. If only peace returns to this region and we can learn to live together with all the differences, we can be super powers in every field. We can easily eradicate poverty and make a model society. Well done once again.
To add, I hope all our South Asian brothers and sisters will celebrate this moment too.
Poverty stricken population of India had no reason to celebrate...when their kids look up in the sky...they are not looking for Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM)...rather they are waiting for their own moms who would came late every night after a tiring day to bring little food on the table...same is the situation in Pakistan...third world nations should start thinking straight and should reset their priorities...because food does not grow on mars...
Congratulations to India and entire South Asia. I wish our south Asian neighbors join hands in prosperity for tomorrow and achieve success jointly as well.
CONGRATULATIONS. I wish the best scientific outcomes; and perhaps we can soon find out how to build a permanent base on Mars as a via-point for deeper soace travel, exploration, and settlement. The cost of $74M is impressive; based solely on overcharging by US conteactors, snd 10x US salaries, one would exPect the US to have spent about $1B, but i am sure it was a LOT more.
I wish next two mission also get sucessful so that india can work on man mission to moon
Congrats India!!! I wish Pakistan join hands so both countries collaborate together to acomplish future missions.
This is an achievement not just for India, but collectively for Asia. Imagine what we can achieve if we join our hands together!
Flag on the Moon.... Now orbiter around Mars.... India scientists rock... proud to be Indian.....
A marvelous achievement.
Congrats India ....first Asian country to do this
This shows that if how capable our Indian scientists are...If there would have been no budget constraints or the scientists gets enough money to explore things, they can do wonders...
Heartfelt congratulations to ISRO. Made the nation proud today. Wish to see China and Pakistan become equal partners with India in this area (on the lines of ESA) and beat all the western nations at their own game.
Feeling proud to be an Indian. Big day for all of us. Hope to see India hub for space exploration in future.
This is an extremely complex and great achievement. Congrats to Indians. I hope we in Pakistan get to the right path too
Congratulations to the ISRO scientists and all of us are proud of you !! Dear Pakistani brothers, thanks for all the kind and encouraging words on this comments section. I hope mutual co-operation, brotherhood, peace and prosperity prevails in the region soon. Much appreciated !!
Next Mission Impossible : clean drinking water and a toilet for every Indian
@Mahmood Good thought Mahmood.
Congratulation to Asia as we have achieved this feat at lowest cost and time, its time to congratulate all of us. Proud to be a Indian and also a Asian.
Awesome
@Afsal - Thank you Afsal brother. You country can achieve it too. All the best for your country.
@Shahryar Shirazi Thank you brother. All the best for your country. You guys can join us soon.
Congrats ISRO. We proud of you.
Congratulations India for the great success ,
I extend my hearty congratulations to ISRO in particular and the government and people of India in general. It is a great achievement. India is our immediate neighbour and we share common history, culture and languages. In the long run this tremendous achievement of India will benefit all of us.We must be proud of our neighbour's.
Three Cheers !!! Proud moment for us !! Hurrey !!
Pakistani should use its potentials for developments like this.
Congrats to India.
Great to see all the positive comments....Hope to expect the same from my fellow Indians when Pakistan deserves it.....Well done readers.
We, Indian and Brothers of Indian (Pakistanis) should move forward and bring collaboration in space even though little possible in earth.
It is a landmark occasion for the Indian Space Research Organization and will hopefully kindle interest among children to pursue a career in Science. With this India become the first country in the World to put a Spacecraft into Martian orbit on the very first attempt. India also becomes the first Asian nation to do so beating both the Japanese and Chinese in the race to Mars. That the achievement came on a shoestring budget of $ 74 million, has left the world in awe. A total distance of 650 million kilometers was traveled over nine months and today after a long journey, the spacecraft was successfully put into Martian orbit. India must continue its efforts to push the frontiers of cutting edge Technologies so that the spinoffs of these Scientific developments can help pull a large section of the population out of poverty. It is also the only way to narrow the gap between the developing and developed countries. Congratulations to the dedicated Scientists who made the achievement possible !
India doing something which Japan and China failed... Fantastic.... never thought I would see this day in my lifetime... thanks VERY VERY much ISRO...
well done india, u have done it. make sure this achievement benifits the entire region along with india. we r proud of our scientists nd pm modi as well.
Well done....... Tecnological leap by a future global power......
This is the way forward. Congratulations India you make us proud.
A great achivement by Indian Space Research Organisation . Proud moment for Asia too.Success has opened new horizons of challenges for ISRO to be resolved for betterment of humanity.
Feeling proud as an Indian. But also feeling great as a citizen of the world. It's heartening to see that this is being celebrated not just in India but even by our brothers on the other side of the border who have joined our celebrations. The success shows that it's not just the super-rich countries but even developing countries can aspire and touch the heavens. As an Indian, I hope that our space programs benefit the entire sub-continent and not just India.
If politics, extremism, needless bickering and weapon brandishing could be done away, we could jointly achieve so much.
Well done....... Tecnological leap by a future global power......
Well done....... Tecnological leap by a future global power......
Sub Continent countries are really very intelligent and strong.. I wish to see all of them prosper and rule the world together as Sub Continent....
Well done....... Tecnological leap by a future global power......
"Critics of the programme say a country that struggles to feed its people adequately and where roughly half have no toilets should not be splurging on space travel." these critics are jealous.
@Truth Hurts grapes are sour
@Akbaruddin you mean congratulations
No match fixing here! A true achievement.
i wld like to wait for our pakistani brothers to compete in this field so that we set a new trend in being the pioneers of world science and technology
i wld like to wait for our pakistani brothers to compete in this field so that we set a new trend in being the pioneers of world science and technology
Many Many Congratulations to India & Indian scientists. There are great amount of things to be learned from India by the world.
Congratulations to the common man of south asia. Let our scientists from these giant nations i.e., India and Pakiastan join hands together for such an impossible tasks in the future. why do we waste our money unncecessarily on nuclear weapons. Let's start a new era of brotherhood. Let the leaders from both the countries think and act like the common man from these two nations and do more miracles combinedly. It's nice to read comments from our Pakistani brothers who whole heartedly are wishing our Mars Mission success. Who said Pakistan people hate India or Indian people hate Pakistan. Let the Almighty pour the blessings on these two countries and make them to live together by breaking the walls of separation and hatredness.
Thanks Dawn for this news and great job by Indian scientist community.
@Mahmood
Well said! Let's also compete in areas like poverty alleviation, polio eradication, employment generation.
Congratulations to ISRO scientists. May the poor of our country benefit from this space technology with better health care and superior literacy for all.
@Shahryar Shirazi pak india china should collleborate to joint reaserch as america and russia doing irrespective of rivelary
Congratulations to India and all Indians. Let this achievement be an example to all Asian countries to aim high through higher learning. A Dari proverb says "joyenda yabenda", which roughly translates into seekers discover or find. Keep on seeking and spread the knowledge to neighboring states.
CONGRATS!!!!!!!!! NEXT MISSION FOR NDIA IS TO PROVIDE CLEAN WATER AND TOILETS FOR EVERYONE!!!!!!!
@Truth Hurts we will achieve it...very noble mission isn't?
India becomes first nation to have successful Mars mission in maiden attempt.
congrats to our Desi brothers and sisters, Mother Hind is proud of all her children today. Jaya Hind.
Three cheers for India's Mars achievement.
CONGRATULATIONS..proud to be a INDIAN......Jai ho...
Really a matter of proud for whole Indian Nation. Well done. We should compete in this way with India.
No surprise. Indians has been flooded here...:)
Great great victory..!
In one sentence - "This is how nation builds".
congratulations on this great success. Please don't take me wrong but in India there are huge amount of people living below poverty line and lacking basic facilities of life, many areas don't even get electricity supply etc so is there any rational for this luxury ? but again i say its a great achievement in its own kind. Well done
Thank you DAWN and Thank you very much to all Pakistani
@SAM, I am sure you are living in the US of A... so have you noticed whether poors and deprived live in that country too? If yes.. then why do you think they are'nt stopping their space mission and get rid of their poverty 100% instead??
Thank you India, now Pakistani establishment will also start some space research instead of Missile programs.
We south Asians especially india and Pakistan are full and excel at hard work and intellect compared to other countries ..... but therefore maybe other countries try to belittle our achievements or make us fight to keep us backward .
I felt immensely glad to see all comments which are positive. I thank all Pakistani brethren for all well wishes and also dawn for this as it has through years of transparent articles provided a bridge of understanding and love for people on both sides.
Thank You DAWN and Thank you to all Pakistani brothers who congrats us. Realy it is proud movement for all the people of South Asia.
Salue to India.. great job!
What China and Japan could not achieve.. India has achieved.. a lot of achievements.. 1st country in the world to reach mars on maiden attempt.. 3rd country in the world to reach moon behind US and Russia... ISRO is the 4th organization to reach mars behind NASA, Russian Federal Space Agency, ESA. It may help India to get more contracts and create more jobs in the economy. Already they have one of the major forces in outsourced satellite launch industry with launch of more than 10 country(Swiss, Belgium, Singapore, etc...) satellites. Indian economy may grow faster with more business in this sector. More people out of poverty and more DTH channels to the common man :-).
Mangal pay Bharat Bhaari hai, Ab Chaand pay kadam rakhney ki taiyaari hai....
@Ahmed USA …Sir, now that we are there, lets try and grow some food in Mars.
I started crying as soon as I read this news.. thank u isro...you make ur proud all d time. .
Thank you neighbors for the wonderful comments! I hope India and Pakistan would compete in these fields instead of Nuclear arms race!
Congrats from Pakistan. You did it!
Hi, Thanks for Dawn to give coverage for this news. As an Indian, I am so proud that we did it in first attempt. And it is lowest cost mission so far. Total expenses is far less than a hollywood movie. India is 4th country to achive it, first country to do it in first attempt and first asian country to do it successfully. India is space superpower now. Thanks to Indian scientists.
@Ahmed USA - i am a pakistani and must say you are jealous. Have a heart and admit they did it.
It is really heartening to see our pakistani fellows congratulating us whereas on the other hand westerners our busy bashing india for even trying to attempt it in the first place...thank you so much for your support Pakistan..i hope that the south aisan countries work together for success n show all these so called developed countries that too are capable enough...my wishes to Pakistan
Love to Pakistan India
The name of the planet Mars in Sanskrit is "Mangal" and it means being "auspicious" or simply "well" or "good". The occasion is not just a scientific, but a milestone in spiritual journey Indians have taken last 5,000 years. Planets are part and parcel of Indians daily spiritual life and astrology as a science is crafted by many Indian scientists such as Aryabhat. Let this occasion may bring, as the name of the planet suggest, "well being" to the whole world.
@Truth Hurts Sure...this project is in progress....
Thanks to all pakistan people who congratulated India. Thank you.
Next, SAARC Satellite.
@Syed that is why you wrote Pakistan with small letters... :) probably mature thinking is not your first priority...
Lets see if Sharif family can find a business deal again.
GoNawazGo
Thanks ISRO for making us proud. Thanks all Pakistani brothers and sisters for congratulating . The day is not far when both countries will join hands in hands and solve the common problems. We sure can do it rather sooner than later.
Congratulations to Indian Scientists for making us Proud of you all! Yes. our mission next, has already started. Toilets and clean drinking water for all Indians. Have no doubts, We will accomplish that also very soon.
@Mahmood Why compete? why can't collaborate to go even higher...
@naz yes naaz that are also in progress might be in one years india will achive there goal
I am very happy to see amazing support from Pakistani people. Thanks to all Pakistani's on behalf of Indians. Humanity is most important. Let us achieve great things together.
Yes indeed this is success of south asia and SARC nations.
I am feeling very proud today. Again our ISRO scientist proved greatest. No China, No Japan and No russia.... ISRO is great now.
many many congratulations !!!
Now we are awaiting for SAARC Satellite.
Great job guys! Congratulations from Lahore..
Proud moment, just running short of words right now. I almost choked up watching India TV channels here in Korea, when the news flashed "Mars mission successful". Tears of joy started streaming down my face. Just can't express it in words.
Now we should advertise for our cheapest and the most credible satellite launching pads so that we can attract foreign parties to use our vehicles. Generate revenue, generate jobs !! Sincere thanks to ISRO scientists.
It's really a pleasure to see so many Pakistanis congratulating India on it's success. We Indians need to note this mature behaviour and respond similarly when we come across Pakistanis/Pakistan achieving something.
@vishal bhatia the benefits should accrue to mankind and more particularly to the sub continent
@Afsal salute to every pakistani bhai who suppots us on this triumph .....
This is amazing, for the very first time....I am reading such positive and brotherly comments from both nations ( India and Pakistan), its good to realize that only peace is the possible way to progress and success. between congratulation India !!!
As far as building toilets is concerned, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swach Bharat scheme aims to eliminate open defecation by constructing toilets in every household by 2019.
Thank you all Pakistani friends, yes its a proud moment for us, i got up very early today morning to watch the latest coverage, iam sure this achievement will bring good results in future for all mankind, a very happy day for India.......
"Critics of the programme say a country that struggles to feed its people adequately and where roughly half have no toilets should not be splurging on space travel."
"Critics": who are more concerned with pooty and toilets, than science and development.
@Ahmed USA When their kids look up in the sky they see hope. Hope to come out from poverty and hope to fly high.
It's a proud moment for India as well to every South Asian citizen. It's high time that Pakistan should praise India's success with open heart.
Many many congratulations to ISRO team and every Indian on this "Mangalmayee" success. We just hope that this "Mngal" success brings peace in Indian subcontinent.
Well done India, Now will you hand over Kashmir to us, please.. lol.
Congrats India!!! Let us use technology and science for peace!!! Let us explore the creates of our God!!!
Even from the economics point of view, this is excellent for India. In 2013, Satellite Industry revenue was $195.2 billion. For comparison, Pakistan GDP in 2013 was $236.6 billion. There can be no better way to advertise ISRO and India as a reliable, high tech and low cost player in lucrative Satellite Industry, than a success in its maiden mission to Mars, which is world record. $74 million spent on this mission, even if taken as marketing expense, is money well spent. This will go a long way in bringing substantial revenue for ISRO and India, especially after the launch of GSLV-MK III, later this year.
4th country to achieve this feat. 1st country to acheive this feat in the 1st attempt.
Budget, lesser than the budget of hollywood movie "Gravity"
@Hope It is always hope which takes country forward. You cannot distribute all of the country's money in expenditure you have to make investments to the future generation and this is an investment.
Congratulations India!!!! This is one area where SAARC countries can collaborate more....
@Akbaruddin - write proper English :)
@Pakistani Very true. those critics forget that the achievement has been made by the people who were poor. The scientists know at what budget they had to reach Mars. Its less than the budget of a Hollywood movie!!
With heart and passion, anything is possible. Congts to all Indians on this remarkable achievement
@Mahmood ,Very nice saying mahmood,we should complete in the area of development .
Well done ISRO, it's fantastic achievement. All now await India's manned space mission! The government must support ISRO financially.
@Akbaruddin what conversations?? are you trying to congrats?
@Ahmed USA one day food will grow on mars
India walo, ab to Kashmir hume de do yaar. Ab to tum mars par pahunch gaye ho !!
Thanks and also congratulations to all Pakistani friends, its an achievement of subcontinent.
Mishra,India
Please leave Akbaruddin alone guys..it is just an error on his part...probably he meant congratulations...do not expect a reply from him... :)
Congratulations from Pakistan.
This is proud moment.
Thanks for all Pakistani brothers and sisters for their wishes here.
I am more impressed by two facts. the narrow route scientis found which they say is not known to many. Second is the cost. Just a mere $75 mil. That is awesome awesome.
Proud moment indeed. At my work place here in US , Indians are already regarded as smart people. But tomorrow would be to feel even more proud.
All mankind will have benefits from this achievement.
Good stuff India. Keep it up!
Classic case of even a poor country can achieve success through dedication and commitment. Australian media last month continuously referred to how ISRO used bicycles and bullock carts to move rocket launch equipment 25 years ago.
Happy to see many positive comments from Pakistani friends. These comments shows that south asia still have some hope. I think this success belongs to entire south asian region.
I noticed a lot of pakistanis congratulating India.
It is truly humbling you guys :') Indians should take note of this mature response and in future endeavor to do the same.
CONGRATS INDIA!!!
congrats ISRO congrats INDIA. still Many many miles to go we are hopeful we are confident. Jai ho.
Its success for south Asia , India is good example > you can manage big country , many states , many differences and languages still they deliver ! Hope we all learn from this and ensure , we do more than petty fights.
Thanks for your wishes Cross border sisters nd Brothers. #Proud2beAindian #ISRO
These projects and nuclear bomb are of no use in a country where millions still live in Slums and below poverty levels. Shame on our government for spending Billions on this. In the other countries mentioned, ordinary people have access to safe drinking water and education. Yet most of my fellow Indians here are feeling proud ?
India super power hogi nahi, hogayee hai- IK
@Ahmed USA There are many homeless in USA and USA spending billions on NSA, how do you justify it?
thanks to all pakistani brothers , let come together and don't fight we can make changes , as it is done only to devlopments of human needs , we can solve all our basic need problems by this.we wish for pakistan to do the same. there is nothing in fighting beacuse poverty and devlopment is our main motive to be solved.
@Dr Mansoor Qasim - I really proud of your comment
@Mahmood No competition friend. but let everyone benefit from it.
@Ahmed USA : you worry, we will celebrate.
@Aziz Absolutely! The knowledge and technology here should be used for all the people in S Asia and beyond.
@Indian Muslim May we always live in peace and harmony for the betterment of our nation.
Thanks every one for your support to India. I wondered no negative comment here. This type of environment we really needed in the future to strengthen both of our country s.
Over the moon
@Indian Muslim Well said ! The credit also goes to the governments who supported ISRO since 1962.
Congrats India
However, this money could have been used to feed one of world's largest poverty stricken community in India.
CONFIDENCE AND HOPE TO ALL SOUTH ASIANS... This mission success shows that we are not inferior to any one ( EU, Japan,US ). We can do what we want!
CONGRATULATIONS
@Aziz Thank you Aziz brother for writing a wonderful comment.
@Sam Modi is aiming for food for all and Toilet for all..Hope to achieve that critical mission also
@naz That we have to learn from Pakistan which has solved these problems!
Proud MOMent... as PM Modi said "Mars got MOM today" ...
@Nom Thank you Nom Brother. - Brother from Chennai, India
If India test nuclear, Pakistan also imitate. Lets see when Pakistan will try the mars mission :)
@Mahmood no compete rather complete, from India.... it is win for Indian subcontinent...
Well done ISRO
@Ali , Space market is around 300 billion dollar market. India is building strong resume in this market so that they can start creating high end jobs like IT and eventually loads of secondary jobs will be created. These days no country, business or individual will invest money without returns.
@Anand There are things to be ashamed about India, and there are things to be proud of. And this was something to be proud of. And by the way, poverty cannot be solved through doles. The people need to be made aware, economy needs to expand, more job opportunities should come up even for unskilled labour. For ISRO, this was an advertisement to assert the country's technical capabilities and make more space business for India.
Those who are suggesting that India should have used this money to feeds its poor should consider this fact, it cost India only 4 rupees per head ( or 6 US cents ) .
If you asked poorest of the Indian to contribute for such a MOMentous venture, he/she would willing contribute 10 times more from his/her own pocket!
@Feroz Very well said!
wow that's really great India!
To be true, I was waiting for this day to see this news in Dawn. Today I landed to this page to see some jealous Pakistanis comment. But except one or two, many people applaud this one. After seeing these comments I lost all the hatred feelings for Pakistan. I understood, all the Indian subcontinent people are people with dignity , humanitarian and respect the achievements.
Thank you Pakistanis, we should not run behind emotions, if we get to know each other well, none can do anything.
Indian subcontinent brains are the best brains in the world, lets channel towards growth of all human race.
This is indeed a very proud moment for India and South Asia. India is planning a 'south-asian' satellite too !
@Amit Sensible argument...admire your curiosity...just few facts for your perusal...USA's GDP is $17 trillion approx...per capita income is $55,000 per annum...population is about 320 million approx...roughly 14.5% of those living in poverty...whereas India's...GDP is $2 trillion approx...per capita income is $1,600 per annum...population is about 1200 million approx...India contains the largest concentration of people living below the World Bank's international poverty line of US$1.25 per day...imagine the disparity…facts speak for themselves...poverty reduction should be third world country's first priority because poverty breeds other social ills...congratulations on your country's achievement, however, real celebration would happen when India, Pakistan and other third world countries are able to eradicate poverty...till than cheers... :)
Congrats to India on this great achievement. As a Pakistani, I hope one day Pakistan will also do such a thing.
I think it is a grand day for India, Asia and the world. Indian scientists work for peace, and in our moon mission too had revealed facets which other mission had overlooked.
The success of this Mars mission shows that South Asia can achieve the sky in case it rises above trying to rule the world by religious wars. I wish Pakistan leaves aside its petty issues which has ripped its society and realises its true potential.
@naz we are out sourcing toilet cleaning jobs are u interested ?
Thanks India, you have made Asia proud.
You have left China behind!
I WISH IF COULD UTILIZE THAT HUGE MONEY SPENT ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF CENTURIES OLD INFRASTRUCTURE.
@Ahmed USA your viewpoint is seriously narrow and tunnel minded. If a country achieves something it does not mean that work is not being done in differrent fields.India is tackling poverty and we have made significant progress. In the next coming 10 years we will change the face of it . That has nothing to do with what our scientists have achieved. There are differrent fields and excelling in each of them is necessary. Some just take more time to achieve that goal, dont demean the hardwork done by the Indian scientists.
Question in front of all the right thinking citizens of the world is this: What kind of world do we want to leave behind for our children? A world of progressive development or regressive mindset.
This mission can generate money to feed less fortunate population of india. Better satellites can improve predictions of natural disasters saving hundreds of ppl.
Proud moment for all Indians. Thank you dawn & all pakistani brothers for your nice & positive comments. Remember, science has no country, no religion. Its for whole mankind. I hope this achievement of ISRO help not only india but whole world.
Congratulations India, from Australia. Well done Indian scientists and engineers. You have made all of Asia proud.
Well Done ISRO, Proud moment for us!!!!
I am sure Pakistan can also do such things in future corruption is the big issue in Pakistan and this is also biggest issue in India, but people of Pakistan also need to contribute in development as Indians doing, all politicians are corrupt no matter which party they belong, but we need to keep faith in the democracy and do our best to build nation.
enough discussions done on this kind of criticism. try to realize that the technology will get a boost from such experimental projects which will anyway help people of our country in a big way. do you think corruption will come an end if 76$ million not spent on this mission? some critics also told "let wealthy nations do that job". can we know how they got tag of "wealthy nation" without having technology at their side?
your answer will be different if you write from Pakistan, the holy land which carries similar attitude of Indians.
@Ahmed USA Do not leave every success to us westerners. Good to see a third world country doing this and being successful Prestige is very important. World will look at India differently. I heard it cost 47 pence per person. That's cheap as chips!
Congrats to the our great scientists and technologists who made us all proud. We as Indians are also thankful to our visionary leaders who are trying to infuse nationalism and love for motherland. JAI BHARAT MATA KI JAI.
First thanks to all my pakistani brothers and sister's this is party tym for all of us now it's our tym to show world Asia power
Jai Hind
Lots of love to Pakistan. Very heartening to see congratulations pouring in from across the border! Today's achievement makes me a proud Indian!
India has reached Mars and no other planet is now far away for ISRO. Congratulations.
@Aziz Indeed..India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka, Nepal...we all should celebrate the moment. This is a south Asian moment. One day will come when scientists from these countries will be able to freely work with each other.
@Ahmed USA - what about sports, movies and fine arts. Why shud poor countries even engage in them?
@Mahmood Maybe cooperate
@Rashed Chughtai You are so right Rashed, and I hope and pray your words come true.
One small step for humanity, but one HUGE step for us Indians! Those who criticise the mission as diversion of scarce resources need to be given psychological treatment. Can they imagine how such successes fire the imagination of the youth of the country? All of us should join in an effort to build pressure for more funds for ISRO. The next target should be to bring ISRO on par with NASA.
@Ahmed USA : Ahmed India has proved its efficiency in the world of technology. Only India has this technology in very affordable price, that's why many foreign countries asked India for launching their Satellites & this will generate foreign money for India. This money will be use for development of India. JAI HIND
@Ahmed USA
Sympathy you can get anytime while jealously you have to earn.
Well done India. Congratulations from Pakistan.
I am sure all the dharna parties, Fatwa-hurling mullahs, Master-minds of suicide bombings, current ruling parties, and negative news seeking media will have no time to think and understand the reasons why India is making such a spectacular progress in almost all the ares of science, technology and commerce.
India may not be an ideal country in terms of progress, but they are heading towards right direction. We need to learn some lesson from them.
In Ancient Indian literature and astrology Mars is considered the son of Earth and is also referred to in these texts as "Angaraka" meaning one who is red in colour. Wonder how these ancient humans knew this, surely there is more to human history than we are given to believe or know. Our ancient Indus civilization and culture holds many a scientific secret that is yet to be revealed but has been lost over time to the vagaries of invasions and colonialism. ISRO's scientists need to be congratulated for their determination, doggedness and frugal engineering.
@Syed Dear Syed, Thanks. Together we can go ahead....The entire asia should be proud of it
Naz,,, we are earning a lots by launching foreign satellites too.
You can also verify on google too.
We have world record of launching ten satellites using one rocket. Last record was of Russia for 7 satellites. You can verify from any where.
So now out sourcing toilet cleansing personals too. You are most welcome.
@Ahmed USA I guess aapko economy ka idea thoda kum hai.. nothing bad.. lemme explain you.. India wants to show the world that in this manner we can launch the cheapest and good quality space satellites.. and please give your contracts to us.. which, if successfully, can help India increase the size of economy, which will help create more jobs and then the guy you are talking about will not sleep hungry ... I feel Pakistan too should do that.. and am sure Pakistan will succeed too, Me too in US and i feel that there is every reason for third world nation like India to cheer about it.
Congrats also to our Pakistani neighbors for joining in the celebrations...Congrats also to their newspapers/Dawn for mentioning the success of India, big and bold!!! This is the way to live and celebrate. No dirty politics, pure from our hearts!!! Thanks again and will always remember your joyous wishes!!!
@Shahryar Shirazi we can definitely make it if only both the country come more closure with more peace within. We have to show the world together we are powerful.
@Sohail I love the humour... :D :)
@Ahmed USA The global satellite launching industry is worth $300 billion dollars now. The success of this mission means that now many countries will launch their satellites through ISRO. So, India will earn billions of dollars whereas cost of Mangalyaan is only $0.75 billion. That money will be used for poverty alleviation.
We in the subcontinent are not dearth of brain. It has been proved again by ISRO. Pakistan has also of the same brain. This is, therefore, time to celebrate the success of the 'brain' by all brothers of this subcontinent. I thank profusely to all my friends from across the border for their joyous and congratulatory comments in the moment of happiness in their neighborhoods.
@Ahmed USA For your information India earn $ 2 in return if it invest $ 1 in space technology.
Hearty congratulations to ISRO scientists for this marvellous achievement. I wish India becomes an authority on space technology soon.
this is the proud moment for all asian countries in particular the south asian countries
Great to see positive attitude of Pakistani folks on this massive accomplishment of India's. Thanks for the well wishes and we reciprocate that you too succeed in every sincere scientific and social initiatives which are good for mankind.
Very happy as a Pakistani Tha our great neighbouring country India successfully put their spacecraft on Mars orbit. Very proud as a South Asian that one if rhe region in the world has proved that we are a force to reckon with.
thanks to all pakistani brothers , let come together and don't fight we can make changes , as it is done only to devlopments of human needs , we can solve all our basic need problems by this.we wish for pakistan to do the same. there is nothing in fighting beacuse poverty and devlopment is our main motive to be solved.
This is a very happy moment for Indians and glad to see Pakistanis sharing our happiness. It feels good.
@Ahmed USA Dear Mr Ahmed you abandoned the subcontinent and sitting in the warmth of America. Enjoying the fruits of hard work of others. What have you done for all the mothers you are talking about so passionately. By the way launching such missions is also a big source of earning for the country. India by now has launched more than 40 satellites for foreign countries.
@Ahmed USA
In future space field will be revenue generation already India is sending satelites of other nation and making money. dont you think investment in space and later on revenue will help India to grow???? India spend 10% of US Mars mission (of course parameters are different but still its cheap) so lets look it at investment for Technology and revenue in future
@Ahmed USA
Well Ahmed let me tell you some basic Maths: Cost of MOM is is 4.50 billion Indian Rupees. Now if you divide this money to a billion people of India, each one of us would be left with 4.50 Indian Rupee which hypothetically according to a first world citizen like you would be enough to feed us all a single meal (it wouldn't). But after a single meal is consumed and excreted out we are back to square one.
So YES this mission was important for India to get hold of 300 billion $ space market which eventually could lift the economy and could feed generations which your little knowledge could have never thought of.
PEACE
@Dr Mansoor Qasim
thx. these is the area where neighbors can compete and benefit their economy
@Ahmed USA Actually this can act as a great budget technology demonstrator. This will mean ISRO will get a greater share of the US$300 billion space market for launches and satellites. This can earn huge revenue for the government which can be used for programs for the poor. Remote sensing and mass education via satellite technology are also decades long ISRO programs. THERE IS NO DOWNSIDE FOR THIS MISSION. BTW US earned $15 on every $1 invested on space. I guess you didnt know all this.
@Abu Abdullah Ansari
Space technology investment will generate revenue. India is sending satellites for other nation nowadays
@Abu Abdullah Ansari Do U even know the chunk of revenue India going to earn with this sucess? This erned money would be many folds to what invested in Mars mission project and wuld definately used for development of what you concerned for. Nations technoloigy strenght will be the major source of income in this era.
reply to a comment in the above article questioning why India need to spend huge on missions when not able to feed its people. Answer is to make money by grabbing share in international space market. India already started making money by sending foreign satellites into space using its launch vehicles.
Well done India - best wishes from Pakistan!
A nation that Ives on borrowed money from the world Bank, is termed the highest borrower in the world. 90% of its population live under poverty line and all they can do, is buy parts 95% from Russia Stick there flag, launch it more their territory, with main Russian scientists hidden in the base in South India, and gloat over the success. Feed your starving people, who don't care a damn for propaganda gimmicks.
@Ahmed USA. You are a real bum. Why don't you come back to your country and help it? Why have you run away to USA to earn more bucks for yourself? You have no right to give advice to others..
@Ahmed USA i dont understand , why you people raise the issues of poverty on development issues..... Total cost of MoM is 450 Cr. before putting poverty in it you should know a few facts; -many indian movies has a budget more than 100 cr. -our last PM travel expenses were 6000 cr
moreever since ISRO successfully put the MoM, credibility of ISRO increase hence isro will receved more contract to put foreign satellite to launch hence more money .. means more growth...
@Ahmed USA - Ahmed - How narrow thinking you have is very clearly seen here. The nation is already doing its job for the hungers, but what about the great scientist we have here? Do you mean they should be deprived of their experiments? Don't forget 1/3rd scientist in US are Indians. If they get the same advantage here in India they would love to come back instead of wasting their life in US. Hence think in broad terms than being narrow minded. There are millions of scientist here in India and they want to do more research. And that is what going to do good to the nation and good to the poor. Generate more jobs through all these means and thus feed the poor. Hope this clears your mind.
As An Indian we are proud and this is dedicated to all mankind. Wish We could live in peace in subcontinent. Pakistan must realize real challenges. Hate will ruin Pak future Generations.
Its heartening to see Pakistanis cherishing ISRO's success. Modi did say to distribute the fruits of Indian space advances among SAARC countries. Best way forward would be to create a SAARC space agency which feeds on ISRO to build satellites for SAARC nations. Hope we collaborate more in space, education, building toilets, building schools. Down with terrorism, beheadings, hatred.
@Sohail.....Not trying to be spoilsport here but....Ab to Kashmir bhul jao yaar...!!! @Ahmed USA....I really wonder how literate you are??? I seriously doubt...!!!
@Truth Hurts Already on it's way .. Hold on your breath for sometime.
@Dr Mansoor Qasim thanks you Dr. Sahab , I think India and Pakistan should organize joint mission in space.
I thank all the pakistanis from the bottom of my heart for congratulating India.
Go nawaz go
@Dr Mansoor Qasim
Thanks to you, There are two worlds the one who fights on Religion extremism, Land etc. and the one who want development for all. India wants development and peaceful solution of all the problems for the welfare of all. i.e. why we said "Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas"
@Abu Abdullah Ansari This mission is not even .001 percept of defence budget of India or Pakistan
@Ahmed USA this is the cheapest mission on mars by India, the amount spent is far less than the amount we spent on fire crackers on Diwali :) It chills
@Truth Hurts ISRO is targerting to capture a big chunk of International Satellite Launch market, which is 300 billion USD per year. To put things in perspective, 300 billion is approximately equal Pakistan GDP.
@Ahmed USA Dear ahmed don't compare pakisthan with india in poverty . There is no food shortage in india like pakisthan. We have more food grain stocks for entire population and state governments distributing through civil supply shops without any cost. The real problem is our distributing system like distribution, transportation, infrastructure and lake of storage units and another problem like lack of education for some people living in poverty (not without food other basic things) and govmt implementing lot for programs for take them out of poverty. Even lot of poor and jobless people living in developed country's also. So we can't wait for wipe out the poverty also this mars mission is cheapest compare to another country's mars missions and this cost nothing for 1.21 billion people we are spending more than this for festivals. We are trying to build our country to world level. I believe we will do this with in 10 to 15 years . Congrats ISRO team..
I wish Pakistan will do such a great and tremendous thing one day. If instead of fighting we come together and invest more in such things. It is not that we are not talented or intelligent enough. We are, and just as much as the citizens of any other country. One of my father's old Cadet College Hasan Abdal today works for NASA as an electronics engineer. Recently the US Embassy in Islamabad hosted an event where they got another Pakistani American NASA scientist to speak about her life and work. She works on the Mars Curiosity Rover project. Hopefully we will one day also send a mission to Mars successfully.
Thank you my Pakistani friends. Very happy to see such a positive response. :)
Just one comment for the critics mentioning poverty etc - social issues are very difficult to solve. And ISRO does contribute to solving them in three ways - one it boosts the moral of a nation, second it creates technologies which can be put to other use (like the special camera, batteries and methane detection technology), and thirdly it generates a substantial revenue by selling our launch services. Also, doing it at so low costs justifies it further. So, to the critics I will say - let's look at it positively and we will together solve all issues of our country and entire south Asia. :)
It is the same India who was once denied to provide the cryogenic engine by the world space leaders. And today here we are the 4'th nation to explore Mars and the 1'st nation to achieve it in the very first attempt. All those westerners who are crying foul that India should first eradicate its poverty are knowingly denying that the space business is worth of $300 billion right now and most of it will be dealed with india in future bcoz only we can provide it at very low cost. Proud to be an Indian.
You didn't mention the China's failure in the list at the end...intentional?
@Ahmed USA : Dso you know the size of indian economy in PPP? We have poor people but we have super rich , rich and growing middle class as well. Our middle class size if more than entire population of the united states. We have poverty that doesn't mean we don't have right to invest in science and technology. You should be ashamed of your thinking.
@Ahmed USA there is always surplus of food in india.....bt only some mismannagement.but if countries leg behind in technology...thry ll surely loose the food in future.
So many good wishes from Pakistan was unexpected.. Thanks to all my Pakistani brothers and sisters... Lets collaborate and create history...
Thank you Pakistan, for your positive responses towards Mangalyaan. As with any celebration, the more the merrier. It is a proud moment for the subcontinent.
Job Well Done , Congrats India
Bullseye in the first attempt is unbelievable ! Especially considering the low budget. India did what Japan couldn't do and what Russia did after numerous attempts. I am proud today.
@Ahmed US don't feel jealous. Accept others achievements.
@Ahmed USA bhai lagta hai Amrica mai reh k aapka ek fixed perspective ban gaya hai; looking at the cost of Mangalyaan - 450crores it comes to less than Rs3.5 (Rs 7 in Pak currency) per Indian. We can afford that with our GDP being $5.07 trillion (PPP) - The economy of India is the tenth-largest in the world by nominal GDP and the third-largest by purchasing power parity (PPP). Yes there is poverty in the country; and yes food grains do not grow on Mars. But kindly note that in food grain production (all types) India ranks among top 3 countries and is leader in many crops (Pak also has good record of agri output). The pbm is not producing food grains but storage and distribution. There is a lot of leakage and corruption in this process. With NaMo/Modiji taking control of the country we are confident these issues will be taken care of and warehouses and cold storages will be built across the country. So kindly celebrate in this great feat that the sub-continent has achieved to reach Mars at a meager sum of Rs 450crores and dont speak like a Amrican/European who does not understand this region and its people and keeps blabbering about poor in sub-continent. This is a BIG achievement for entire Asia.
@Ahmed USA ohh! stop this singing this Poverty song Dude ! we are improving our abilities in space science to reduce poverty man ! we Indian aren't stupid ! we growing faster then fast n we are confident we will sweep poverty from india in next 10 or 15 Years .. if don't have guts t appreciate india then plz shut ur mouth up ... proud to be Indian . Great achievement .. thanks all of you!
Love you mother nation proud to be indian. East or West india is the best .
@Abu Abdullah Ansari whts HUGE? Rs 450 crores? thts like Rs 3.5 per Indian in which now a days u cant even buy a candy? Indian GDP currently stands at $5.07 trillion (in terms of PPP & is 3rd largest in the world). This is a good investment for the future dude; & ISRO has a good track record of launching satellites - even Europeans get their satellites launched by ISRO fyi! Yes there is poverty in India and lot needs to be done. tht doesnt mean we shut off science and technology advancements till we eradicate poverty. In Rs 450 crores not even 500kms of national highways can be built!!! This is the occasion when Asia rises esp the sub-continent. Its a moment of celebration for entire Asia!
Whilst this is a good achievement there are millions of Indians who have no access to food, health or basic sanitation.
Perhaps India should concentrate here on earth first and stop trying to pretend that they are the first world.
Zaid Hamid wants an Ummah rocket to Jupitar now.
@pranav at moment we are trying to get our politics in to orbit !!!!
An area both of us, India and pakistan, should start working together(amongst other areas of course)
Right, they cant give toilets to their poor nation and talking about Mars mission. Its the desperate attempt by western civilization to project India in this region and there is no doubt they have gave all technology to India for this purpose. More or less american and Israeli toys painted in Indian colors. India cant even produce a reliable ballistic missile.
The mission also makes India the first country in Asia to reach Mars, after an attempt by regional rival China failed to leave Earth's orbit in 2011. FEELING PROUD :D
@naz defiantly ! we are working on it n till 2017 every indian will have toilets n clean water n in 2021 each indian will have own Home .. n in 2030 will reduce nearly 25 % poverty n in 2040 india will achieve what china nUSA will have . this is our Indian dream . so Wait n watch bro. what we do n where we reach .. anyways Thanks ..
@Ali Govt job is to create opportunity for every individual to earn his / living not to keep handing out freebies or free food. Science and technology will create more jobs and thus eliminate poverty in long run
Congrats dear neighbor!!! Keep it up!
@Dr Mansoor Qasim Respect your comments. We should collaborate in future!
@naz Next mission for you guys is to provide manners and feeling of appreciating good things
@Truth Hurts What is wrong with you man! politics is not part of science.
Proud Asian... Let's work together..
@Sam its Rs 3.5 per head bro! yes there is a lot to do! but scientific development has to be parallel to infra development etc. U cannot ve a nuke or a satellite or a missile or a vaccination the moment u want it; it needs a lot of R&D and time. India's space mission is parallel to its overall development.
Proud Indian+Asian... Let's work together..
I wish Pakistan will do such a great and tremendous thing one day. If instead of fighting we come together and invest more in such things. It is not that we are not talented or intelligent enough. We are, and just as much as the citizens of any other country. One of my father’s old Cadet College Hasan Abdal today works for NASA as an electronics engineer. Recently the US Embassy in Islamabad hosted an event where they got another Pakistani American NASA scientist to speak about her life and work. She works on the Mars Curiosity Rover project. Hopefully we will one day also send a mission to Mars successfully.
@Sohail We will take Kashmir and place it on Mars shortly. Then come and get it from us :)
Well done India!!! Congrats to everyone from the sub-continent!!! who moderates these comments? Why dont my comments get posted?
@Ahmed USA : there is one big difference between India & Pakistan .. we are trying to open avenues children y giving them more education & more opportunities ..but look at Pakistan where are they going what is their standing in world ,what are you going to give your future generations guns & grenades ...come on ...difference between these two countries is VISION for future and certainly Pakistan is lacking in that
Congratulations !! Let whole humanity have benefits from this.
A flawless mission executed by ISRO. In spite of what the detractors say this mission was worth it just for the soft power shot in the arm that India will receive from this mission. In real terms, ISROs commercial operations may see a jump in earnings because of this mission's success. Thus, offsetting the cost of the mission and the space program
@Ahmed USA Sir with all due respect...Thanks for suggestion... And as a matter of fact we do know that foods don't grow up in mars. But definitely can be bought from the money which Satellite launching can bring in to INDIA..In the same line of software Industry ,Space satellite launching will be next game changer. And for that purpose only this launch was meant.
Now we asians can say we have also gone to mars. Proud moment and for hypocrites talking about poverty india spends 1 trillion dollars every year to elevate its poor and this mission is 75 million how can you compare both and you cant elevate poor just by ffeding them but only by providing jobs and ISRO does that. Ill give an example for you In 1990's when India was laying optical fibres under oceans for Internet people laughed at India that why such a poor country need internet nd you no what now we are software hub of the world. With every leading software company in the world has a R&D centre in India. All the technological stuff is to provide jobs and space industry is one such direction which is going to have a bussiness of over $500 billion which ISRO want to achieve and already ISRO provides technology for about 30 countries to launch their satellites. india spends 1 trillion dollars for poor per year for their upliftment isnt that sufficient so we should just give them food and let them sleep w/o work. still you say no then NASA, ESA, russian space agency and also china as it has the highest number of poor next to India should also stop
Most hearty congratulaions Hindustan. We are partof you.
Proud of you India u beat China in Mars race I feel ashamed of our political class
@bilal HA HA HA...absolutely true..
Now we asians can proudly say we went to mars and we are the one who found water on moon not NASA or ESA or Russia but chandrayaan and done with such low budget with incredible success with success in first attempt in both missions
@Ahmed USA
if spending 70 million dollars to get in to 400 billion dollar space industry , i say money was well spend just to put things in perspective our goverment spends 7345065.55 USD (that is approx. 7.3 million USD ) on PM secetariat house , and yes I am a Pakistani
Its seems very unusual. But by looking at the comments from both Indian and Pakistanis audience, It seems that it is the most unifying moment for the two neighbors. Its a very pleasant surprise. This is even more important to me than the MOM mission itself.
Congratulations to ISRO scientists...
@Ahmed USA Dear Ahmed, get your facts right , India is not a third world could. Its the 3rd largest economy in the terms of Purchasing power parity, and 10th largest economy in the terms of GDP and the rate at which India is growing, it soon going to become the growth engine of world and as far as mission on mars is concerned this is the step in the right direction. By spending 74 million USD, India is all set to get the bigger pie of Space business which is currently around 300 billion USD. I hope you understand the forthrightness that India has shown in the field of space technology. Thanks
@Ahmed USA ppl said the same when india invested in IT. results are loud and clear. hope u get it. many in us also are homeless..
@uxman Masood Thanks brother. India & Pakistan Must work together to excel in the World.
While the world is moving to outer space, Pakistani youth and its savior leaders and media are doing their best to the take the "naya" Pakistan to dark ages!!
A great achievement though, but we need to concentrate more on socio-economic development of the largely suffering communities in South Asia, especially India.
Two major things happened today. One, of course a great success of ISRO India in putting satellite (MOM) successfully in Mars Orbit. The second is, positive comments (except 1 or 2) from Pakistani friends...Thank you...This is really an amazing feeling.
for all those poverty concerned people! do you compromise your progress for the poor people? do you donate? anyways, if all the nations just cared about poor people and didn't invest in science and technology. there would have been no inventions. we still would be living in stone age. and human race would have extincted by mosquito bytes, probably.
Hey Paki friends, I am delighted by your comments... U people are awesome Congrats to U also on success of MOM... Technology's benefits have no boundaries
cheers :)
@Ali Space technogy will help the poor also. And with your logic, poor countries should not do any sports, or make movies, or even build good roads. being a Pakistani, you have to denigrate India by any means. Your hatred has to be shown somehow.
thanks to all Pakistani brother for congratulating India/ISRO.. Its actually Asia's success.. Some people are worried about money spent on this mission and could have used this money for poor . Its just $ 73Million . India is surely making money out of these missions.. thousand times.. FYI : The rocket [PSLV] which was used for this MOM has lunched commercial and study satelights of 8 different nations and earned money already.. we are not in race with any country. however we know how to earn respect from world... Pakistan is our younger brother and we saw Peaceful , rich and developed Pakistan
@amit We'll make toilets on mars ;D
@Sohail ha ha ha ha.... sohail bhai very funny yaar. anyway, Big thanks to all pakistani brothers and sisters for their congradulations.
@Abu Abdullah how about selling all cricket stadiums and all cancelling all sports activities to make pakistan railways back on track?
Been going thru Pakistani newspapers, it happens that DAWN is the only newspaper to mentioning the ISRO's successful mission to Mars. Thank you DAWN you are truly a liberal newspaper. Congratulations to ISRO,Hindustan and those who worked day and night to make this mission a fantastic success.
I logged on here to see the Pakistani reaction to our Mars Orbiter Mission success. I am pleasantly surprised that there are almost 99% positive responses except for a couple. Really heartening to see this. Just imagine what potential we have if the whole of South Asia joined hands instead of squabbling over issues like we did for so many years. There has to be an end to all this. Hope the leaders find a way out because I believe ordinary citizens are already on the right track as we see on this forum.
@Sam 1. This mission is not that expensive what you have in your mind -please check the amount spent on mission Mars 2. It involves sophisticated technology - indigenous development of technology done by Indian scientists - Congrats to all Indian scientists and well wishers 3.Such programs generate jobs and provide technology to other programs 4. Do not worry Indian know theirs problems and then know how to solve them
Respect!
Look at Millions starving in India crowded by Crows & chapattis, take care of the first, this looks like Indian fils where life s shown Aristocratic but actualy there is nothing like that.
@Truth Hurts - can you provide that in less than Rs 4 person thats what is is the cost of Mangalyan mind it 450 Crs for 120 cr Population of India
@Anand tell me buddy If there is a tragedy in a family and than afterwards comes a birthday/anniversary/marriage don't you still celebrate all these?. Chill. Learn to enjoy things of the moment. This is a heroic achievement. Celebrate it. Be over the moon errrrrrrrr mars!!!!!!!!!!!
India has some very strong knowledge of Space Research and Nuclear Science. We as Indians are proud of our esteem departments
@Ahmed USA "Experts say the mission's main aim is to hopefully snatch a bigger share of the $300-billion global space market". You saying why India spent $74 million, when india is hopefully to get a big chunk of $300-billion market. Can you imagine how many problems can be solved in india with this huge money.
@FA Ameen
In the breakdown of attempts there is one missing
CHINA - 1 attempts - Failure 2011
You need accurate timers for space technology. This sun dial made 750 years ago is accurate to a minute.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9RF9lLBIMs
@Ahmed USA we have a saying in Punjab for you kind of people ronddan bibi ( always cribbing lady)
The data is wrong, China also made an unsuccessful attempt in 2011 as its orbiter Yinghuo- 1 failed to left earth's orbit. India is first country of Asia and the world to have a maiden successful mission to Mars. I believe instead of importing missiles from China and North Korea, Pakistan should develop its own space engineering in collaboration with India. China itself has signed a deal with ISRO recently to work together on remote sensing satellites. If India and Pakistan join hands remote sensing can help a lot, to fight natural calamities in particular in South Asia. A lot of young engineering students and ladies in particular played a vital part in Mangalyaan's success. Hope Pakistan directs its young minds to science, positive approach and creation instead of jehad, sectarianism, fundamentalism and hatred towards other beliefs.
Congratulations to Indian scientists who made this possible. Just a few decades ago, many people in South Asia thoght great scientific feats were something only the West or Russia could achieve! With this successful Mars mission, that myth is broken. The only thing that now stands in the way of many advanced Asian nations, as far as space technology is concerned, is its huge cost. Nevertheless, hopefully, more Asian nations would achieve more in the scientific field. Such achievements could also break the hold of obscurantists in some of these societies!
@Syed i am sorry to tell you man but there are 4 times more indians. So dont say this.
@Ali Congrats India
"However, this money could have been used to feed one of world's largest poverty stricken community in India"
Yes, India needs to learn from Pakistan on how to overcome poverty and become a prosperous nation. They should learn to do do dharnas that will solve all of the countries problems and feed its poor.
@Shahryar Shirazi YOU WILL. AMEEN
really feeling happy to see my pakistani friends reacting to this historic event, no words to describe !
What a complete waste of time and money! This is something that has been done by the US fifteen times and was first done in half a century ago. It is not clear what great new discoveries will be made by this mission. It is utterly wrong and almost immorarl for a poor country to spend so much money merely to pacify its inferiority complex.
Pakistan congratulates you!!!!!!! May sanity prevail in this part of the world and we start competing in these areas!!!!!!
@Sachin Lets work togather to resolve Kashmir.
@nadia Congrats dear neighbor!!! Keep it up!
Will do, but your continued help will be needed.
@naz Dear..that mission is already underway..don't you worry about that.
I guess success was due to learning from others causes for failures. India needs to feed its people adequately and where roughly half have no toilets. SHAME, and same goes for Pakistan.
Congrats! ISRO........... Historic day for India! .... This event will boost future of Indias space mission! Even 36% of scientist working at NASA are Indians!
Congratulations to India and we are thankful to Pakistani brothers for the warmth shown. How we wish Pak army and ISI also reflects the same.
Anyways, moving on, some comments are really intriguing. Next mission for India should really be to provide clean drinking water and toilet for every Indian.
But I don't agree that we should abandon such technology missions altogether and be dependent and at mercy of G8 for all technology.
@kanika Very true. One only has to look at the reader response pages of online Western media to see the extent of racism and colonial triumphalism in regard to India's achievement. It is crucial for India, Pakistan, and other countries that were enslaved by the West to not only promote science education on a massive scale, but to also educate their young on the history of Western colonial domination. In scaling new scientific heights, post-colonial nations can rewrite their histories as well. Hopefully, Indian and Pakistani educators and public officials can come together on these issues.
I am very pleased to see congratulatory message from Pakistani brothers. This shows that everybody hoping for a stronger relationship b/w India and Pakistan. Hope we invest more money in science than in building missile.
@FA sure this is time to think for Pakistan. Fundamentalism has ruined Pakistan. they must now grow beyond it.
@Ahmed USA What are you doing IN US? High time you return back to the third world - India or Pakistan wherever you belong to, and help us reset the priorities.
Its easier to preach than dirtying your own hands.
This is right time for India to boost it's space and scientific programs. India is becoming soft power readily. Earlier Indian thought, Religion, culture, spiritulity, Yogas spread all over the world. we are proud on Aryabhatta, Varah mihir. Now this is time for India to become superpower in field of knowledge and intelligence.
@Ahmed USA Bro if you read carefully. This mission was done with a budget of 75 million dollars. That is less than monthly budget of one town in india. Secondly ISRO is a profit making organisation that pays tax to the govt. ISRO make a lot of money in launching satellites for other countries and private players. ISRO has launched more satellites in past 5 years for others than any other agency.
I am happy that my Pakistani brothers are congratulating India and also are proud of success of its Mars Mission.
Congrats ISRO!!! history has been created. Proud to be Hindustan! !!!
@Rajesh China failed only because they tried to send up their spacecraft aboard a Russian rocket which exploded. So China cannot be faulted fully for the failure.
Fake mission built on boot leg technology stolen from US using spies , like China and nothing indigenous in this.
@Ahmed USA There is no dearth of naysayers and denigrators. Why don't you be the ambassador and ask militarily powerful developed countries to stop looting others?
This is one of the very rare moments when we see our Pakistani friends sharing our maiden success in space. It is very nice of you people to have forgotten our differences for a while and to join us in sharing our pleasure and pride. May you people be also blessed to achieve success. We shall surely share your pride when time comes.
@Ahmed USA --- with progress, we can remove poverty. This amazing show to technology will get India more business and job, that will result in reducing poverty. Everything is interconnected my friend. Look what have India's software technology done, created millions of job.
One thing for sure...after browsing many news sites I have come across many people who stay in DEVELOPED world writing stupid comments about India's Mars mission...but as I see here that our Pakistani friends are definitely far better and well mannered that those stupid developed lots....Thanks guys..May the Almighty bind the two nations with love and respect for each other.
@Vaibhav
Mr. Ahmed knows whatever you have published. He is just a negative freak who is just performing his daily ritual of anti-India --- anti-West criticism whilst enjoying all benefits in a foreign country !!
@Taufik Mansoori
Taufik.... Thanks... one mroe thing... Am not for a single India or a single pakistan... but just a point that Pakistan also has a lot of talented engineers who dont find opportunities.... Instead of working we can createa talent pool ( without politics) that India can reap for commercial reasons nad Pakistan can use to build its pool further ..... until it reaches a size when these folks will fuel pakistans commercial activity....
But we need ( unfortunately) the mullah's and politicians concurrence....
The land which taught the world to count and calculated the correct paths of planets and stars way before Galileo and Copernicus "discovered" these, is once again rising to reclaim its rightful place in the world after foreigners destroyed our self confidence. Throw away your negativity and join in the pursuit of progress and peace...
@Ali Thanks for congratulating India. There are poverty stricken people in India, can not be denied. The same is true for Pakistan. Then, is it not a waste of money on Pak nukes and missiles? Everything goes side by side for all the countries including India and Pakistan, the security stricken countries.
@Ahmed USA food may not grow on Mars but business will come from it. Money invested here will bring in billions of dollars which can be used to educate poor. india belivein training a child to finish rather than spoon feed it .
@naz by the grace of allah, we will do it.thanks
Good. Now lets build toilets for everybody.
@Rajesh China never failed. China infact so far hasn't attempted. We have to admit they are atleast 10-15 years ahead of us. They sent a man to space in 2008. We at best will be doing it in 2025
@Ali No offence intended, but that will be 4 Rupees per person.
Congratulations to ISRO for a very successful mission - hope to see more and hope to see the knowledge from these result in scientific advances that benefit all of South Asia
Proud moment not just for India but also for Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka and for the entire Asia.
@Ahmed USA succeeding in technology has a positive effect in tackling poverty. You need to think hard to understand this as your comment had already displayed your intellect.
@Observer exactly....so many talking about india being poor and poverty ridden etc etc...i kno we have our share of probs but shudnt we live in this moment and feel happy about it.the problems that they are talking about dont get solved in a day or even a year...it takes time to get rid of them..if we go by their logic we shudnt even hav sports or films made as they too involve a lot of monetary investment....and honestly India and Pakistan are not poor..the main problem is that leaders in both the countries are very corrupt...ppl in our countries join politics to get rich.... hope that all the south asians realise their potential and join hands to show these developed countries what we are capable of...
@Ahmed USA Are you from Mars?
@Ahmed USA I admit that poverty is a problem in India.India has to feed 1/6 of global population. But our ambitions are not limited. Now we start to earn money from this also.Other countries who want to put their satellites in space would come to us.Poverty is not an obstruction for achievements
if only our ruling oligarchy had not been squandering our resources using our corrupt army we too could have been indulging in these glorious exploitsin our nation
@Ahmed USA We know our priorities. If we can spend 2100 cr subsidy on hajj pilgrimage b/w 2011 to 2013.then why we can't spent 50 cr for space research.its just that we need to strike balance between our priorities .things will take time as you know from one village to another nearby village we have different language, culture and so many varities. But please if you are not with our success atleast don't be jealous.
congrats to india
@Ahmed USA:: I pity the man! You need to get your heart and soul examined. And not by doctors.
Feed your people first!
@zak : Yes Zak let us work to resolve Kashmir. That is what India has been saying for the last 67 years.
Looking at the comments here, I say one misconception - Pakistanis never celebrate Indian success - would be removed. It's thrilling to see so many Pakistanis congratulating and feeling happy for India. Hope this success would play a role in transforming the lives of people of SAARC countries, as Indian PM Modiji has declared earlier.
@Zak Ok Done , what next , feed you too.
@Ahmed USA - I agree with you. All science should stop till you either have everybody out of poverty or only the elites left to feed. (Sarcasm alert for some dimwits)
@Ahmed USA These type of things help bring jobs, investment and development which can help erase poverty and hunger.
We Pakistanis need to also invest more in space sciences and increase the funding of our space agency, SUPARCO.
@Ahmed USA The fact that you add USA after your name indicates the level of inferiority complex that you have.
This is a stupendous achievement. No other country would have attempted this type of launch as did India. The rocket used was the work horse of ISRO, the PSLV. It was not the ideal rocket as it could only follow the polar orbit that necessitated many maneuvers to push the satellite out of Earth's gravitational field and travel towards Mars. The PSLV used an India built cryogenic engine for the first time. The satellite too was designed entirely by ISRO. Above all, 15 Indian companies supplied the equipment and sub systems that made this project a success.
Frugal engineering was always the forte of ISRO. For starters the budget allocated to ISRO is a fraction of what Space agencies get in other countries. Next there is the constant carping by leftists, NGOs and other vested interests who keep bleating that India could usefully divert funds from "futile" space research to alleviate poverty, as if the two missions are mutually exclusive ! India never lacked funds to tackle poverty. Incompetence, wasteful administrative costs, callousness of the bureaucracy and rampant corruption in delivering benefits to the poor are the real reasons for the fact that only about 15% of the funds allocated to poverty alleviation actually reach the poor. Unless these lacunae are addressed, even if India winds up its Space program, the poor will remain poor!
@Ahmed USA - Sir, the business and economic opportunities that this will bring for India is a contribution in the hundreds of millions. Such earnings will, in turn, contribute its' mite to job-creation and addressing poverty issues. If we did this right, the South Asian population will all stand to benefit from the Technology that this effort spawns or entails. The real question to ask therefore is - when will we realize the mutual benefits of cooperation?
@Ahmed USA If it bothers you so much, just come back to your nation and do something!
Why is US's space mission not raising any such questions? Is every citizen of US well fed or not living on streets?? The answer is no.
Your argument holds no ground whatsoever. Stop cribbing and do something for your motherland if the poor and hungry bother you so much that you would rather live in stone age trying to feed all than trying to find new ways to generate revenue (that would help feed the poor as well).
The next time hollywood produces a billion dollar movie, you should protest outside the studio questioning it's motive to create a stupid movie rather than feeding hundreds(if not hundreds of thousands) of poor american citizens living off the streets.
Good Day!
ISRO did xcellent job. Congrats India.
@pal That is precisely the reason you will not be able to do it. I mean, the tendency of crediting everything to god and involving god in everything will always keep you backward. Don't smirk! Think about it!
@Taimoor Khan... Can you even make any sense...?
Brothers across the borders, thnks a lot ! There r people like u n me on both sides of fence who enjoy sharing joy... Thnks a lot again.
thank you
hi pak brothers im chethan from Bangalore(india) i seen ur comments i realy happy to reply ur wish's
thank you
@Sajjad Khan yes... Sure you did ..! 67 years back...!
Sir: I am glad the ISI is not yet operating around Mars. rolland
@Pakistani Nowhere in world does it say one cannot spend on science to find ways and means of bulding a better society using scinece!
.... emotional as I read the messages felicitating Indians from so many Pakistani readers. The warmth feels completely genuine.
P.S. Where do we go wrong in our relationship? As always, 'Zak' the simpleton court-jester, seems to know.
@Ahmed USA Science and technology always help the poorest. Mass transport, mobiles, weather predictions, e Governance, agriculture, water conservation, milk production, education communication satellites..................................................
@jo in british pence it is 0 . 0 3 5 per person ..
So glad to see the comments of my Pakistani Brothers! It shows deep down we are one!
While India explores space, we make more Metros. LOL.
@Zak hv polio vaccination :)
Another step in the space research history for India but a great leap for mankind ,i am proud to be a human.
One of those moments I feel partition was a great blunder...!!
We appreciate the wishes from Pakistanis... at the same time I would ask Indians to ignore the comments made by people(?) like Zak or Taimoor Khan. They see everything about India through Kashmir angle or through religious angle. We have 256 million strong middle class now when compared to 160 million in 2006.. did other countries helped India with aid to raise our middle class ? Big NO! We are selling our talent across the world. Go to any Fortune 500 companies in US or Europe... you see Indians across their management(both Business & IT) portfolio. If our government in India can focus on primary education and higher education.. people can find jobs anywhere in the world and can build their own homes with western toilet.. I don't know how the program like MoM gonna help the common man.. but for sure it will provide a great inspiration for people who want to do something in the field of science and technology... not just that..branding of India's talent. as we have the biggest workforce after China.. we receive more remittances(70 Billion USD) every year compared to any other country... we need to do something on our own like MoM to ignite our minds to build a skillful talent...since we are not oil or mineral rich or we don't get or rely on financial aid from other countries.. we need to look at our 1.25 Billion population as a vital resource and mine the talent.
@Zak : Don't advice others what to do. Mind your own business.
I wish India and Pak were one country where we all were not so divided. The sentiment from Indians for the Rehman Malik episode was just as encouraging as the comments from fellow Pakistanis for this news. The only people benefiting from the divide are politicians..!!
Congrats India....wake up Pakistan. Our real battle is here..!!
Few complain about India’s poor people and lack of toilets: For 'inclusive growth' India is spending its budget in all sectors. If you see the space budget it’s only a fraction of overall. Out of this fraction if it does scientific research and earning foreign currency for country then it’s definitely appreciable...
@Zak : Don't get jealous dear...atleast learn from your own countrymen who are giving their good wishes to India for this remarkable achievement. Take care :)
@Ahmed USA If you are so curious and thinking about poverty then why u are there in USA ? come to your country and server for poor people..
Congrats India for achieving a milestone in the history of World and also for Asia.. Please accept heartiest congratulation from Pakistan.
@Sohail Whatever we have already given to you( that is much more to area vs population) is not administered well by you.
Thank you "DAWN" for an excellent report. Good relations between India and Pakistan would benefit both countries, however, Pakistan has much more to gain. All it need to do is to give up its State policy of cross-border terrorism against both Afghanistan and India.
Great Job India...way to Go ISRO!!
Great achievement! Humans, irrespective of nationality can feel inspired to see what one is capable of.
To those talking about poverty - please think about what this achievement means. India will get more space projects which means more jobs. A very good way of fighting poverty I think.
@naz PM modi has set his eyes on cleanliness and constructing toilets. He is himself starting the cleanliness campaign with a broom to clean India on 2 Oct(Mahatma Gandhi's Birthday). All issues and problems are being paid attention simultaneously. PM Modi does not sleep nor allows his ministers to sleep, he does not indulge in corruption nor allows others. From 26 Sept he would be in US following a gruelling schedule which even young people find hard to emulate.
@Ahmed USA Don,t cry for me Argentina. We are exporting food grain also by 2019 all the Indian households will have atleast one toilet.Thank you for your genuine concern though.
great and we are stuck on electoral reforms, land reforms in short we need to work on reforms in every field.
@Ahmed USA you do have a valid point, however these are the kind of things that motivate us. Imagine if one of those poverty stricken children decided to make his/ her mission to be the next Modi, Dr. APJ Kalam, Kalpna Chawla..... This is the kinda stuff kids need, especially in places that are offering nothing but hunger and despair!!!!!!
We are ready to share the data with Pakistan also.
Congrats ISRO and INDIA. Many many thanks for Dawn for sharing our success with the people of Pakistan. A very gentle gesture.
@Ahmed USA Space technology is one thing, which can give India the money it needs from launching satellites to feed the poor, improve infra and other nation building activities. It is a big business internationally. We don't launch satellites for free. Look at it in this angle. Santosh, Kochi
@Tamza Yes, you are right, They used fuel efficiently to reduce the cost drastically. Here is the link to the explanation: https://www.facebook.com/video.php?v=10154688730895165&set=vb.898235164&type=2&theater
For us Indians this is a moment of great pride. Heartiest Congratulations to the entire ISRO team and to all the past ISRO scientists who have over the years created a spirit of quiet excellence at this organisation. ISRO has nurtured and bred many brilliant men of science - the most famous being our much loved former President Shri A.P.J. Abdul Kalam who would no doubt have mentored many of the present team. A very big Thank You to him. Ours is a country of many disparities and we have a long way to go before we overcome these, but we will in a few years. We are on the right track because for example in India a humble chai walla can become Prime Minister and a boatman's son can become a leading scientist and go on to be the President of India.
@Truth Hurts Do you really have one toilet for each member of your family?
@Ahmed USA The only thing that comes to mind reading your comment is; Grapes are Sour. Grow up and acknowledge the success.
Thanks to Dawn and all the Pakistani readers for their congratulations. It could be clearly seen that these are genuine good wishes, and they are invaluable and precious.
Hope there can be cooperation and competition in these areas rather than on something causing destruction.
Enough has been said and beaten to death about the poverty, toilets and the cattle !! But these should not come in the way of wanting to progress in other fields, and reap the benefits. Science, technology, (and space !) are not exclusive frontiers of a few endowed countries. Unless we drive our lives and nations looking solely into the rear view or side view mirrors, we should overcome the castigation, bizarre advises and sermons and keep our sights focused on achieving bigger goals and enable the benefits transform our societies. Big challenges in today's world need big solutions. As Einstein put it so kindly that it is delusional to expect solutions with the same mindset as is creating the problems.
Never mind people like Zak the Great or Taimoor Khan or Ahmed USA, who need some urgent treatment to restore their sanity.
Thanks to my Pakistani friends who have Congratulated India. I hope we can learn for each other and eliminate poverty in the sub continent.
Thanks to the Pakistani's who have congratulated India for this, and as someone rightly said, this is the area where our countries must compete.
What a waste of money. Could have been spent on the poor, who cannot meet their ends meet or afford at least twice in a day proper meals and on those leaving in the slums.
@Ahmed USA thats a very dumb statement. It's like not sending your kids to school because sending kids to school does not make money or feed poor. This triumph will get India the recognition it deserves and have more kids interested in science, which will lead to more prosperity. This is a moment of joy not to bicker about poverty.
For those criticizing MOM reminds me of times when landlords used to tell peasants: why send your hungry child to school, send him to my fields, let him earn a piece of bread for a days work. Good work India.
Has anybody seen Zak?
ISRO Rocks!!!
@ss Dear ss, ISRO is going to earn in billions by launching other country satellites. It is a business model for India now.
@Ahmed USA It is your delusion, not reality.Live in reality the world is changing.
@Sachin Dhawan Now, indian government(Modi) will definitely allocate more budget to ISRO to explore
@Sukhwinder Singh you cannot wait to alleviate poverty and do scientific experiments. If that was the case, when US started their space programme, they were all out of poverty? If this achievement can bring in jobs, it will eradicate poverty. We simple Indians think that this a careful invest made by India. Also showcase the complex engineering skills involved. After all we were the best on this planet. And we are on the way to retain that glory.Till then you can sulk or cheer about this achievement. Many to come. The signs are visible around you.
@Abdul My friend Abdul we are still one,our hearts are united.
It's amazing how the Indians and Pakistanis are sounding like citizens of one country. There is still a hope that we can co-exist peacefully.
Thanks to all Pakistanis for their wishes and congratulations.
US Failed 4 times
USSR: failed 14 times
Russia: failed 2 times
Japan failed 1 times.
India reached Mar in first attempt
Hats off to India!!
@Dr Mansoor Qasim Thank you very much. It is high time we leave behind our disputes and join together for a better future for both of us.
@Vince .I can understand your pain. If We South Asians wake Up. All West or East countries Will lose their revenue..
@Ahmed USA ,
Absolutely wrong statement my friend. You are one of them who thinks what it's the benefit of making schools when you are living hungry.
Doing a successful landmark job like MOM, India will now invest and develop more and more in science and technology. This step can stop brain drain in India. After all it's all about education. Don't always expect a direct result in everything. Advancement of education will lead to a strong India in future.
You have been given a brain to think. What is the benefit of keeping it inside your head, when you can't think this simple thing????
i just loved reading the comments...no hate......only love .....rarely found on the web especially if its india-pakistan.......it goes to prove that science unites us all.....thanks for your wishes Pakistan
@Ahmed USA What you are saying is right. That makes this misson more important. I dont know what kind of information this craft will gather. But one thing is sure , that Space customer, will have lot more faith in India now. If you dont know,It is 314 dollar industry. India wants a bigger share in that.....so that mom can bring food at the table when she is back from work. and may be Govt can build more toilets as per your deep desire. 74 milion is peanut, for confidence building measure. You may think of this as marketng gimmick. This is front page news in every newspaper of world (except Pakistan). Free publicty. Got it !!!
Thank you Pakistanis for positive response
@Syed I feel that should be the spirit. This is the kind of bonhomie that both India and Pakistan require to get rid of common basic problems like illiteracy and poverty.
After going through the comments on this page, I truly feel that common citizens are desperately looking for a peaceful coexistence.
Dear Pakistani brothers and sisters, thank you all for the wishes. These wishes are the results of our inner cultural connections. We have been fighting all along. Let us continue to fight. But, on the new battle grounds of Science, Technology, human welfare and knowledge.
O Mother India, we are your children, O Krishna, O Allah, O Jesus, Wahe Guru, hum sab ke tan me hai man mein hai tumhara lahu.-- One of my school assembly prayers.Miss childhood.
Congratulations India!
Congratulations.I am proud as my root are all Indian. The very fibre of my being has it's origin in my mother land India. This is an amazing achievement for me too. This makes me want to be a better human being and strive to reach my destiny.
@Abhinav China launched Yinghuo1, failed to leave earth orbit. See here http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yinghuo-1.
Thanks dawn and very good to see positive comment form pakistan...
I just realized something today, a good wish from the other side of the border mean a lot for us than the rest of the world. Thank you all for your support and love. You just made my day.
420 plus comments and still counting, thanks Dawn and thanks Pakistani readers for their warmheartedness.
@Ahmed USA 20% of population in USA lives in BPL ...so y NASA has whopping 12.7 billion $ budget...??? this is insane Statement Mr seems u r jealous or jus dnt knw the mission importance ..
Hi, I am delighted at the comments of all the readers especially Pakistanis. They have praised Isroachievement. Really happy that the comments did not turn out India vs Pakistan duel.
This is really great. We should all be proud of isro's MoM. It's a great achievement.
It shows that all we need is dedication and a little push and support from one and all to achieve great things.
I hope this will spur innovation in a large scale to improve our lives by all Indians scientists and engineers.
Congrats to all.
@Ahmed USA What a warped reaction. Are you suffering from senile dementia? krishnamurtirao
@Ali Tahir thanx bro. well appreciated.
three things come into my mind. 1. Common Pakistani people are warm hearted. 2. The comments here are far better than comments in western media
@Akbaruddin what conversations?
@Ahmed USA Have some business sense, if not common sense. This was a technology display mission. Cheapest mission to Mars ever. India can potentially earn billions of dollars by offering low-cost space services to various countries.
@naz We would. Space industry would earn us billions of dollars - just wait n watch.
@Ahmed USA thank you. but I promise we as citizens of india take the issues you have mentioned seriously. you will see a better india in exact 10 years. but, we still want you to be our critic.
@Abu Abdullah Ansari you are right, but don't you think this as a infrastructure boost, as more revenue can be generated from this mission. there is a scope for higher returns for this mission.
@Taimoor Khan Burning with jealousy ?. Remember the space research is for entire humankind so grow up and appreciate that somebody from Asia is doing good. And, yeah space industry would earn us billions of dollars so don't worry about us.
Please feed your people first, at least 80 percent of whom are living below the poverty line i.e. earning less than four dollars a day.
@Vince its a cycle today maybe we both , India and Pakistan are poor , but it was not always the case, we were very very rich prior to the British rule ( thats why explorers used to seek coming to our sub continent and we all know America was discovered as the Europeans were seeking out our rich mesmerising land). so although we have to re develop cries of shame is unwarrented for both India and Pakistan. we shall both come back strongly as historically we all are gaving very prosperous and smart genes.
Hearty congrats to the ISRO Scientists for the achievement . But thanking all the Pakistani Bros for the great positive response.
@Abu Abdullah Ansari : But we did that......we improved infrastructure to launch space satellite........
@Taimoor Khan thank you for your thoughts, we as citizens of india promise you that the issues mentioned by you will be tackled and you will see a better country in next 10 years. thank you. please observe our shortcomings and comment so that we can improve.
@Ahmed USA No wonder you live in USA - hope your babies don't sleep hungry, where several million children go to bed hungry.
@Ahmed USA While what you said is partially right. India still has a lot of people who are below poverty line. But what as an individual sitting in USA, Ahmed, have you done for India and to curb the problem of poverty and what right do you have to say anything in this regard? Just like politicians talk and do little you too are just sitting in USA and commenting.
Just because its poverty stricken does not mean that it should shy away from such a mission.FYI, Maybe you are not aware this will indirectly benefit India in many ways! Besides with this mission being successful foreign countries would give a lot of money to India to get their satellites launched via ISRO. This will bring money to India and help in India's economic development.
I never stop being amazed by your objectivity of reportage. The English-language news media in India is pretty much biased against Pakistan. We do need to appreciate merit no matter where it comes from.
@Arif A.Khan. okay we will and we will make their lives better this is me and others like me (citizens of india) promising .
@Sohail bhaisahab kya karoge aap Kashmir ka?
@Sohail Mars bhi hamara hai. Kashmir wah in discuss karenge
@ss are you taking part in any of the dharnas. I think yes lets see what your country is capable of?
Congrats to India.
@Ali How much does Pakistan spend on 'defence' ?. That money could have gone to alleviate poverty in Pakistan ?
@ss don't come out of your shell, be there, your comments show your knowledge
@Zak well your comments were eagerly awaited, stop revealing your foolishness by commenting rubbish everywhere
@Ahmed USA For you food grows in USA ?
One of my happiest moments
An Indo-Pak joint venture in Space, would have a tremendous geopolitical impact. It will just rock!
@Zak : Your comments are not only in bad taste, they are also pretty misinformed. I know you must be hurting, my sympathies!
Good Evening my Pakistani Friends. Its just make me Happy to see all congrats messege coming Mostly from pakistanis. So less of hatred and lot of love. thats good. abt Mars Mission. its indeed proud movment for me and my fellow indian. but its also proud movment for all of South Asian, as your elder brother has done it in first attempt.
@Ahmed USA Your logic is equal to saying young kids from poor families should not go to school but instead find some job to feed the family. Of course rich kids can study because they can afford. Sorry all nations should find ways to invest in science and technology. Today this success probably made a lot of poor kids to dream bigger in India.
@Zak You are embarrassing your fellow citizens, nothing else.
Sare jahan se achha hindusta hamara......
It was the challenge thrown by Musharraf to South Asian space scientists. Musharraff rightfully pointed out the lead held over India by Pakistan after the launch of Pak Sat. ISRO took it seriously and planned this MOM Mission to compete with Pakistani space faring capability. Over all a great accomplishment and congratulations to South Asia.
Most commentators here are couch patriots jumping over at the achievement of a few hard working scientists. That's the problem with subcontinent people, too many sluggish people and very few doers.
@Sukhwinder Singh Also please tell us what is the country debt and what is per capita debt of Indians and USA citizens
@Indian Muslim Jai Hind Bro..#UnitedWeStand
@Abdul Mannan Mulla No hand out please but empower the people to think big and get education to achieve it.
@Sukhwinder Singh Can you please define what is an unnecessary expense?
Congratulation India... You Did It!!!
Pakistani Nation is proud of you...Job well done India:)
Well done ISRO. Proud to be an Indian. Keep it up 4 d next manned mission to moon.
Very proud n very inspiring moment...why shoud we indians compare ourselves with west...while our fellow scientists are doing a world class mission in same environment...if they can...why cant we???
@Murlidhar I don,t think Indians in USA believe they are wasting their life on the USA.
@Mahesh pehle khud kuch karo bad me sab ki congratulations accept karo....
@ARJUN : Pakistan got their independence a day ahead of India. Hence they belong to the older stock. India is young.
Isro well done
@Sam yes in india poverty is a issue(arnt there homeless people in USA but the govt is still spending billions of dollars in space programmes) ,INDIA IS working very hard to overcome it but this does not mean that india should not flourish in other fields if it has potential,, plus u can see it is the cheapest mission ever , indian scientists were clever enough to do what others have done in much higher costs thts intelligent thinking ,,come on man gravity movie was made in 100m usd ,,these guys have done such an amazing task in just 73m usd... it hav opened a commercial launch market for india worth billions of dollars which they can utilize in their development ,,,hats off to the great scientists who have contributed in this mission
its amazing to see that how popular dawn is in india.. great.
There are loads of people who still questions about the space program of India by ISRO. To give an example in 1999 India lost around 15,000 lives due to ‘super cyclone’ in Odisha state, now cut to 2013 during another cycle ‘Phailin’ in the same state India lost only 2 lives!!! India manages to save tens of thousands of lives due to indigenous capabilities in remote sensing which was bang on; in 1999 India had to depend on data from foreign satellites.
Western countries criticize for girls education, poor hungry people, lack of toilets etc but ready to do arms deal in billions of dollar!!!
Which is more important? Toilets or lives????
Mangalyaan mission of 780 million kms for 450 crores (INR), which comes to around Rs 6 per Kms, still better than any auto rickshaw charge in your city!!!!
@Zak
Oh Man! Zak's on to us. Darn it.
Congratulations to india on this landmark achievement and good luck on future evdevours.
Thanks for all positive comments from our Pakistan Brothers , there are few negatives its O.K, we don't have worry, You need critics to move forward, God has created different sizes of finger for reason, without different size you cannot hold anything tightly.
Hats off to ISRO, I like Dawn come down very often to see my neighbors.
As a Pakistani I feel proud of this indian achievement. Both india and Pakistan should compete in the fields of science and arts and human development. India has surged ahead and Pakistan should be proud and do some soul searching to get our piorities right. Guns, bullets and wars bring destruction and hatre.
Good to see positive comments from our Pakistani brothers. This is a proud moment for our south asian subcontinent! May we all live in peace and prosper together!
Thank you Dear Pakistanis for overwhelming response for Mars Mission, This really shows that majority of Pakistanis do care about India and also it means a lot for Indians. We should learn to ignore certain comments who hide in there pseudo names and make embracing statements.
This mission inspires kids in India to embrace education growing up I was inspired our beloved APJ Kalam sir, I hope Pakistani kids do get inspired by this and adopt modern education which promotes peace and solidarity.
a current runs through body everytime I read abt MOM on ISRO site..how do our scientists do it agn n agn? they overcome all d sanctions. all d technologies dt are denied to them.they work n work..when I see them nervous. .I pray fr thm..when I see smile of success on their face.I get goosebumps. .I am just 21; preparing for toughest exam in India IAS. when I will hv kids..I will want them to be like these scientists. I will not force them.I will try to motivate them.. yes.we hv poverty n lots of other problms. but we shall overcome them..there is no reason why we will not.. India will reclaim it's place at the top of constellation of nations.
@Ahmed USA Such feats not just is a display of what a nation can do but also helps in motivating the younger generation to think positive, think big and a mindset that we can also achieve. I wish kids of Pakistan has something positive like this to aspire
@Ahmed USA I live in USA, we have a lot of poor too, that's the job of Economist, let scientists do their job with state support.
@Indian Muslim ...Bhai Jan... Say India or Bharat...Not Hindustan.. Doesn't sound good
A very proud movement for all Indians..........
@Ahmed USA ..Sour grapes !!!.Have you been to Detroit? or Interior parts of Mississippi?
Congrats on milestone achievements.
Very proud of our nation. Thank you people of Pakistan for congratulating us. We are not enemies. British divided us because they knew that together we can be a superpower. Let us not fight. Let us co-operate and eradicate poverty from our nations and let us together be scientific superpowers.
thanks DAWN... i read almost all 495 comments here.. i have changed my view for pakistani peoples.thank u for ur huge support. no one want conflict. we should focus on our educations and science and technology... we should join hand in these fields.. and also try to reduce haterdness towards each other.. we are in conflict since 1947.. what we gained?? absolutely nothing....
@Zak Your comments bring a smile to my face. Keep TROLLING Zak.
@Ahmed USA ..If you are that Patriotic, don't you think you shouldn't be writing your name as "Ahmed USA" write "Ahmed Pakistani". Looks like nit picking is your specialty.
@Ahmed USA isro also earn mony by launching satellites of other country and this achivment will make more money by cheap and best comercial launches. we are indians and knows value of money bro.
@Dr Mansoor Qasim Dear Dr, Thank you for your kind words. This is what neighbors should do. Support each other in good and bad times. Recent floods in J&K and Pak has been catastrophic to both countries. We helped each other out irrespective of religion, cast and boundaries. The message from mother nature is clear. It does not differentiate so why should humans feel superior on one over the other..
On the top of that west is selling us the arms and keep these conflicts going so that war machine is working 24/7. This money which we should use for betterment of masses. Hope good sense prevails and peace returns to the regions. We can even have a joint cricket and hockey team someday but then I am a dreamer.
Dear Paki friends,As an Indian, I am touched by the congratulatory messages on this board.
Thank you for your kind words on the success of MoM.
On the top of that west is selling us the arms and keeping these conflicts going so that war machine is working 24/7. This money should be spent for betterment of masses. Hope good sense prevails and peace returns to the region. We can even have a joint cricket and hockey team someday but then I am a dreamer...
@zak ...nothing to resolve. Wait for few more years till all my fellow young professionals from J&K get the taste of success like I have, nobody wants to leave India. Pak? where is it? is the question they will ask!!! Jai Ho & Jai India
@peaceplan ...Did you just say in your previous post we are using Russian technology??... Contradicting yourself ???
proud to be an indian...Congratulation ISRO we proud on you...!!!
@Ahmed USA Yes food does not grow on mars. yes, we are poor. Do you think that we can start investing in science when all our basic needs are met. It will never happen and has not happened in the developed west.
Let me put things in perspective:
Cost of this mission :$67 Mil USD
Cost of scams in India in recent years: I don't even know how many zeroes to put after 1.
Morale booster that we are no less or inferior ( in fact we can do things better and cheaper): You can not put figure on that.
The hope and inspiration it provides to "hungry" generation: Priceless.
Now these kids can dream of someday working for ISRO rather than NASA. What these missions do is give hope to entire country/subregion to start believing in oursleves rather than flocking to west.
Their role models and heroes be Sachin Tendulkars, Imran Khans, Wasin Akram, Jahangir Khans, Hassan Sardars,Homi Bhabhas etc instead of some Rockies, Sylvesters, Arnolds..
Hope that makes sense now...
@Sukhwinder Singh - It comes about 0.0037%, not 0.0074%, as mentioned in my previous comment.
To all people who are questioning the wisdom of spending money on these missions rather than basic necessities, here is my take.
Yes, food does not grow on mars. Yes, we are poor.
Do you think that we can start investing in science and maths only when all our basic needs are met. It will never happen and has not happened in the developed west. Still we see lot of disparity in west.
Let me put things in perspective:
Cost of this mission :$67 Mil USD which is a drop in ocean for the size of Indian Economy these days.
What these missions do is give hope to entire country/sub region to start believing in ourselves rather than flocking to west.
Their role models and heroes be these scientists, Sachin Tendulkars, Imran Khans, Wasin Akram, Jahangir Khans, Hassan Sardars,Homi Bhabhas etc instead of some Rockies, Sylvesters, Arnolds or some Indian movies stars who has not contributed a one cents towards upliftment of the same people who made them rich.
Hope that makes sense...
Congratulations India! Well done. It is a very impressive feat. Success in first attempt at such a low cost. I am from Pakistan living in the USA and have many Indian friends. I have come to the conclusion that there are no logical reasons for India and Pakistan not to be on friendly terms. Can we not forget whatever has happened in the past and move forward? We are so much alike that many times it is not even possible to tell which of the two countries is one from. If I don't disclose my nationality, even the Indians I meet here in the USA think that I am from India. It makes no sense to hate someone who is so much alike us.
In 1947 two nations started on a journey..................today, one has reached the Mars, and the other to a dharna in Islamabad!!!
Thanx Ahmed for your excellent comments
Thanks you neighbours for your messages. To reciprocate, I would like to congratulate you on throwing out the ex minister from the flight in Karachi. We have to beat that. Let the healthy rivalary begin...
@Taufik Mansoori ...
That's Hats off... not heads off. And it is Mars. Just trying to correct you bro.
A proud moment for all Indians, well done.
Coming from a Paki neighbourhood.. ;-)
537 comments.. wow
Congratulations to all South Asian (SAARC) countries on this remarkable achievement by India. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already directed ISRO to come up with an advanced satellite program that can be gifted to all SAARC countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. The new satellite can be used by all SAARC countries free of cost for Education, Agriculture and Weather Forecast. You Indians are doing great. Appreciate your achievement and willingness to share technological advancements with fellow SAARC countries.
@Ahmed USA Investment in space technology is an investment in economy. Think about how this achievement may create business for India in satellite launching. Think about what motivation it would create in children. The Mars mission is not an end in itself. It creates technology infrastructure, which creates jobs. And jobs get food on the table.
When celebrating the MOM success we must congratulate the great Indian scientist A.P. J. Abdul Kalam who started it all at Thumba, Kerala. I am sure he must be the proudest man today. It is true that India had always shown its gratefulness to him. He served as the 11th President of India and was showered with the highest honours, including Bharat Ratna. He is a devoted Indian Muslim and was elevated to the post of President of India when so called "Hindu Nationalist" party BJP was in power. This speaks volumes about the secularism in India, and this great ISRO success is the result.
@Ahmed USA
Really? 61 million dollars is peanuts compared to India's GDP. fraction of NASA's MARS mission and < Gravity's budget. We should stop arms race and use THAT money to feed and care for the subcontinent's poor.
@Saptarshi Dasgupta I am thankful for the comments from Pakistani well wishers. I wish them well too….but lets not get carried away and say the standard things…..the British divided us , we were always one….all that is not true and relevant. India and Pakistan are two different countries and have different trajectories. As for 1947 Jinnah had popular support behind the idea of Pakistan and its another matter that that idea does not seem to have worked. Wish them well regardless.
@Arfi Ali - For that we need people like you. Can you please count how many are like you? Not many - that is the most unfortunate part.
Congrats to India! I wish Pakistan and India come to a point where their relationship is as friendly as Canada and the US that will result in mutual benefit.
@Arfi Ali Thx Arfi. I 100% agree with you. I also live in bay area and I think my Pakistani friends are the best.
@Taufik Mansoori Small correction Taufik bhai. Its hats off, not heads off.
@Zak Here comes our greatest visionary. Where did you get these figures? You know, where do stand in this forum? Bottom. You got a problem and and we know that. But jealous, there is cure for it. So you keep going on. Its fun to watch your frustration reaching to the boiling point.
@Syed This is how an educated Pakistani seemed to be live in USA and spreading. I am sure he is surely part of the 'greater' group working 'hardly' to achieve their 'objectives'.
@Ahmed USA,Ahmed Bhai,it is like starting aplant/business,unless you invest you cant get business.India will get business even from USA.Besides it has provided knowledge and jobs to Scientists to stay and this ads to economy. Surinder Kade USA New York
Often western journalists snipe at Indian space achievements by questioning the poverty and other related issues. The price of this Mangalyaan expedition is a lot cheaper than the transfer fee of Luis Suarez from Liverpool FC to Barcelona!!!!! India is a young democracy ( just 67 year old) same as our vibrant neighbour Pakistan. Very hard as it is to strike a balance between religions, castes, regions and races. Still, India has done wonders in science and technology. I personally feel , living here in the UK since 1990; the west is jealous of any Asian achievement. I look forward for a day when India and Pakistan would launch a joint space shuttle. I think it's going to happen in my life time. I am 52!!!
@Ahmed USA Bhai Ahmed, First try to understand the economics behind space missions then you will know the monetary benefit India is going to get from this and it far more than the money spent. You must educate yourself before making unqualified statements.
India has shown how a launch can be simple. Simplicity is the most beautiful thing in the world.Time to ponder and think. Science is the physical medium to reach the heavens and God himself. If God is powerful, there is no need of man to fight with another to market him. God is Truth. Truth has to be experienced. Experience cannot be materialized through mere knowing or through explanations. One has to eat a sweet to know how it tastes instead of reading books about the sweet. God has to be experienced and nothing can be achieved by fighting about him taking cues from Books that describe him. Instead Man should treat Science as a divine instrument to appreciate the creations of God. Science alone solves the problems of humanity. India has taken this path of appreciating God's creation through Science.
@Arif and strength our frienship
@Dr Mansoor Qasim , Mansoor saheb agar dosti par chalen to dono desho ko bahut faayada ho sakta hai, Main dil se chahta hun ki aisa ho
@Taufik Mansoori Thank you brother.... This is just the beginning! god willing,we will soon outpace that so-called big brother in terms of every thing very soon!
@Syed Thanks, yes we did it. I declared to my pakistani friends long time ago, this is the subcontinent's pride. We celebrated it last night and celebrating again this weekend.
@Abu Abdullah Ansari not enough to do anything for the infrastructure, for that separate qouta of money and separate mechanism is there,
@Pakistani well said neighbor
Just a small correction in data presented towards the end of the article. You have not mentioned China's failed attempt. 2012.
As an Indian I feel elated and on the top of the world. Bravo Indian Space Research Organization!!!
@Ahmed USA, I don't I understand your logic my dear friend. Why should India restrain itself from developing new technologies for the sole reason that we have a lots of poor people. After all research and development in science and technology would be an impetus in the fight against poverty. No country in the world would share technological know how with others. So one need to develop their own technology. I am sorry to say that your comment can only be construed as jealousy and born out of hatred.
Nice to see that so many fellow Pakistanis sparing their time to congratulate India on her historic achievement. It clearly reflects their inner bonding with India.Though seperated physically , the both the countries have same ambitions to come out of stigma of a backward and poor nation.Technological advancement in various fields serves to achieve our desired objectives. MOM's success is to be seen in that light. It will certainly boost capacity building of indigenous industry to excel in high end technology. It will boost morale of people in general to perform in other fields also with a strong belief of WE CAN DO IT. I hope it will inspire so many talented people across the border to explore their own potentials . It will certainly benefit Pakistan and World.Come on ! You can ! We can !!!
@sidhu ,,,,,, saab se aage hoge hindustani,,,,,,,, hindustani,,,,,,,,
@Ahmed USA Does it grow in USA?
@ Zak & Dr. Malaria Ahmad
They say familiarity breeds contemp. Your envy towards your former self now neighbor is in poor taste. It just shows your lack of respect for humanity and betrays your low self esteem.
@Ahmed USA dear ahmed , pl know that it is a commercial exercise for brand ISRO , we are already launching satellites in to the orbit for other countries , and charging them , it is a business enterprise and u have to look at the expense as an investment for better business, satya
@Ahmed USA : This will only help India in becoming one hub for satellite launch by showing off its capabilities. Which means more revenues. That we can use to help these poor people. Do you have any idea that how much business these $68 million could bring to our nation. So it's an investment not a waste of money. One more thing for you, why you become so critical whenever someone other than USA challenges you in terms of cost effectiveness or your empire. Don't be so shortsighted and also try to view future aspect of this.
Regards
A person from a futuristic nation.
It is a landmark achievement. We can't put a price tag on any achievement.
@Zak look at your self before talking or writing ..
@Ahmed USA See a doctor in Pakistan- U need help!
@Anand By your yardstick, there should be no advancements in science and technology since no nation is free of hunger. and btw no shame in revealing that you are a Pakistani. We Indians do not mind your criticism because what;s your word against rest of the worlds ?
@Ahmed USA Are you on social security ?
Energy and funds used in the a right direction! Bravo! "Now, lets not forget the poor also!
@Ahmed USA So... Mr. Ahmed let me ask you one question. What is the practice of spending your earnings in your home? Buy food stuffs for the whole money, eating and going to toilet? We are too far from that. What we have done is an investment for tomorrow. So just watch and keep silent.
@Arif A.Khan. Let them starve, you don't feed them but kindly do not insult those starving millions.
Congratulations India on your success mission
@John F Australia also contributed in this mission. The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex is the prime station for the mission as it relays data to mission control at ISRO's Telemetry Tracking and Command Network in Bangalore. This is a critical element of this mission.
@Ahmed USA You a great looser and jealous person in life. Ask your country(if not India) to achieve what india did amidst poverty. Jai Hind & Vande Mataram !
@Aziz Thanks to all my Pakistan Brothers for your congratulations:-)
We are proud of Indian scientists,to achieve this milestone.
Information Technology, INDIA GRABBED... Space technology INDIA CREATED ROOM FOR BIG PLAY...Life Science Technology, INDIA WILL EXPLODE in coming years....Rightly commented by a leading journal, "a 2000 year old wine is uncorking....."
Our Decision making class shames me .... also congratulations India
Great.
It feels great for the hard work done by the honest sincere and intelligent scientific community at ISRO.
It feels great to see people who are showing light of hope to the ordinary Indian of diverse faith - that sincere hard work can take them to unimaginable hights.
It feels great to realize that ordinary Indians through their hard work and achievements can humble the corrupt people in system and make them mend their ways.
It feels great to see that ordinary Pakistani s also are happy about our achievements and are cheering our brainy assets.
It feels great that even at this our moment of glory people are reminding us that we should be firmly rooted on ground realities and must assure potable drinking water and sanitation to the last Indian. We certainly will feel great when we achieve that.
We should feel great if our achievements infuse the whole of SARC region and drive it on path of scientific development peace and prosperity for the most disadvantaged human being .
Good to see so many positive comments. We are 2 separate nations, but our love towards our mother land is similar. Hope Indo-Pak joint venture will rule the world. But vested west won't allow that.
@Zaid are you saying people are better off in Pakistan ( no poverty of course and clean toilets everywhere and no terrorist anywhere? .. I BELIEVE you my friend.Anyway thanks for your concern about indian poor.)
@Dr Chandra Rao in expecting a joint venture in space technology between I and P you have only exhibited your ignorance on where these two countries stand on technological development. Rest assured, Pakistan can never catch up. Not in your life atleast. Relax.
@Sohail I am Kashmiri from Srinagar.
Please leave kashmir alone. Why don't you look at your development and we look at ours.
@Nabeel S (Sialkot) .Thank you Brother for your heartfelt congratulations to ISRO for its achievements.
@Ahmed USA Dear Brother,
As stated by the ISRO, this mission was meant to be a demonstration of India's scientific and engineering power to the rest of the world. The MOM was almost entirely home grown initiative. The govt., now can use this mission as an advertisement to attract more such kind of missions from other countries, Asian and Europian alike.......And as we know, space missions don't come cheap...So, India may now use this advertisement to attract billion or sub billion dollar space missions from around the globe....
Agreed, India is a poverty striken nation, and children here can't see the MOM when they look up in the sky, bu what they see is a promise of better future.....
After reading all the comments in the BBC website yesterday I felt very disappointed venomous comments posted by lot of English people linking India's achievement with poverty and rape and foreign aid to India and so on. And today I read congratulatory messages from our Pakistani cousins which is from the bottom of their heart which made me emotional and provoked me to think. Despite all the stupidities happening between our countries Pakistanis have so much warmth for us and have a big heart to congratulate us but the English people comment so negatively about us bordering on Racism. Time to realise who is true enemy and who wants divide us and rule us.
@Zak Why are you so worried ?
@Abdul Mannan Mulla What percentage of your budget is spent on 'defence' ? Why don't you ask your government to use that money for feeding the hungry, housing the homeless and treating the sick in your country ? Yeah and while you're at it, you can set aside some money to fight polio.
@Ahmed USA Our kids have today understood that they can reach for mars if they study well. Unless you allow scientists to use their knowledge what is the use of building more schools.
Stupendous and such an outclass work! You made it through guys... Congrats India, Indian nation, Indian scientists, and of-course to Pakistan as this achievement is shared and celebrated by all of us being not just neighbors but BROTHERS as well. After a huge span of time, i loved to see positive written celebrations from both countries (Pakistan and India). As there are some communities from both sides that don't even want and let us to think even positive for each other. But at the end of the day, i would say that its you and us who can rip-off all the barriers, negativities, and other hatred polished comments from people who just intermingle their own knitted mentalities to make us fight with each other. Yes Pakistan and India do possess that high level caliber and capability to go much beyond than that in not even Science and technology but also in other fields of life. A much positive hope for future relations among Pakistan and India to show other countries that yes we can compete with you in any field and could set you far away behind us. Thanks all Indian and Pakistani brothers. LOVE YOU INDIA AND PAKISTAN!
@Dr. Salaria, Aamir Ahmad Get off the net Don't waste electricity. It is a scarce resource in your country.
@Selva Kumar : True Selva..its disgusting to see BBC's comments. They dont understand what is the money spent...It is lesser than building few metros stations
Hardly a reason to celebrate for a country which has more poor people living in extreme poverty than sub saharan Africa and with 800 million people who don't have toilets and defecate in the open. Talking about misplaced priorities.
@Ahmed USA Know that India produces millions of tons of food grains in excess of it's need.Poverty here is a man made one rather, because of inefficiencies in distribution systems. Further, India is the 3rd largest economy in the world, in PPP terms, and the 9th largest in terms of absolute GDP . So shed your elitist notions of Western superiority. By your stupid logic, NASA shoul suspend all it's missions till every American get a shelter, and health insurance!!. After all, it is our money, we will spend it the way we want.
time for stupid Asians to stop fighting each other and progress together.
@Mahmood True
@Sohail - Agar Mazaak kar rahe ho to theek hai ! Hamari Ammi jahez mae to nahi laye Kashmir.
@Khan Why don't you guys first fight polio and then comment on how India chooses to make investments?
@Sukhwinder Singh - Well said, elimination of poverty should be priority. Sending a rocket to Mars is a jingoism , a cheap popularity contest.
@Sam
It is a ridiculous thing that if there are poor in a country, it should stop doing everything else. If you have a sick man in your house, who can't eat anything but liquid diet - does the entire household including children stop eating other food and doing other activity?
Besides, which country doesn't have poor? By purchasing power parity USA has 16% people in poverty. i.e. don't even make minimum wage and can't take care of themselves (no shelter, food, education etc.).
Did that stop USA from funding NASA and launching a man on the moon? Or did it stop USA from expensive wars?
These are two separate issues.
@surinder kade
@Arif A.Khan. Despite all the problems you stated, people from Pakistan come to work in India. Think about that.
@Abdul Mannan Mulla If someone is poor it does not mean he does not send his children to school. Feeding family is today's problem, whereas educating children is investing in their future. India has invested in future of its children. I hope you will understand.
@Shahid Sultan Minhas We have Minhas Rajputs on Indian side. Thanks for your appreciation.
Woow..never thought such a warm welcome for this success here from our Pakistani brothers. Far far better from the comments on western medias. They robbed everything from us and never thought such a turnaround in history. Jealousy minds stop them from appreciating this massive victory of Indians. Thanks to all my Pakistani brothers.
How come no mention of China's failed first attempt to reach Mars, in the table of all countries who have succeeded and failed! Is the higher that mountains, deeper than oceans friend in a special category?!!
@Taufik Mansoori Heads off??
" India is the only country, to have succeeded in its very first attempt:" modi.
Congrats to India and its "team work" on this unmanned venture to Mars which was only possible with major tech help from both Russian and Israeli space scientists and engineers. Yet of course modi and ISRO will take all the credit and cover up the real brains behind this better late then never mission. One wouldn't be surprised if the Washington Post story about this mission written by an Indian is based on a false premise. India lost several "rockets" in the last decade which purportedly were attempts to send satellites to Mars yet were not successful, thus the cover up.
@Dr. Salaria, Aamir Ahmad 1. where do you get your data from ? madrassah ? 2. are there no hungry people in your country and yet you spend 40% of your GDP on 'the army'? shame on you. 3.yes we have more poor people in our country but we have managed to stamp out polio which your so 'thought of prosperous' country will not be able to do for more than a decade. 4. How many killed today ? next it might be you.
@Zak After the success of this mission our PM mr.Modi told to media "When you fails people will blame you on the same time when you success people will be jealous of you" Now we understood what the exact meaning of that...
@Abdul : You may not be aware, but this so-called "doctor" Salaria has a one-point agenda: to denigrate India any which way he can, and logic sanity be damned
@Ahmed USA Dude right now the world is a capitalist place. It is survival of the fittest .Government do not take taxes from the poors.75 million spent on this mission is nothing compared to the money government spent for betterment of people.if you can do something for the poor then donate money rather than commenting about the condition of our people .
Congratulations ISRO.
It is one of a successes achieved, after India was sanctioned from getting high-end technologies for sub-critical or super-critical fluid handling systems, efficient batteries, special alloys etc.
Who had put sanctions over India were Western countries, Japan and Australia, who claim to be the most Ideological friends to India. Meanwhile China(which they claim to be the rival, both in Public, Press and Diplomacy) was given all access to such technologies by Russia and West both. Indians should not forget this fact.
Mission Mars followed by Mission Moon is not just dry demonstration of Jingoism, it is a display of Communications and high-end Weaponry technology, India is going of achieving. I am sure, it will be causing chill in the spine of both US and China.
But, Indian leaders should not ignore two basics for a lasting Civilization: One, no hungry population and, the second, Education (Quality Education).
Again, Congratulations ISRO.
This is a success story of not only India but the whole of south asia. We have now proved that we can also develop scientific research instruments and also undertake deep space exploration. Hats off to the scientist and ISRO. Proud of you. India and Pakistan should actually collaborate and support each other in such research activities and in the process helping each other to grow and develop.
I whole heartedly thank all people of your country for over whelming response on mangalyaan mission ,surely both countries will have good relationship in coming days.
@Zak Zak, why don't you also bootleg and get a Satellite out. Let's see you guys do just that.
While in Pakistan ........ Veena Malik gave birth to baby boy.
@Ahmed USA if u dont know space exploration is biggest market in world india export its rocket to European country worth 50 billion we dont ask for donation from usa
Proud to be an Indian. Jai Hind.
This is the kind of race countries should try to beat each other in. Not in arms races.
@Zak - why stop at that...tell us about the excellent life in Pak-watan...maybe the poor Indians can learn and be green with envy...And while you are at it, grow up.
I am In work with and have many Pakistani friends and employees who work for me This is just anecdotal but they are as smart and creative as the best I have worked with on Wall Street.
I see no reason why the finest Pakistani minds could not have achieved this. It's all a question of political will and national policy. In the case of India the political will existed to enable this.
Wish the nation of Pakistan all success, peace and glory that it deserves.
India usually takes the lead, but Pakistan does things better. I can assure you that Pakistan would soon land on the SUN.
An unprecedented gesture of wishes from Pakistan makes this an even bigger reason to celebrate.
Great day for India as the indigenously built Mars orbiter enters the Mars orbit marking the success of the mission. First country in the world to have succeeded in such a mission in its first attempt.
The orbiter boasts of numerous innovations which make it significantly cheaper than what has been achieved by anyone in the world before proving.....that high tech can be low cost as well.
So many in the corporate world believe that big salaries and fat bonuses are the only way to generate superior performance. The Mars mission has been delivered by a government agency with people working on standard government salaries.
@Ahmed USA India has a mountain of food rotting in govt godowns. The inaction from the previous was the reason. Every state has is implementing newer food schemes, so that people do not go hungry. Other countries have sent observers to see how this is being done and have gone away impressed. Read the link below
http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/chennai/egypt-comes-calling-at-amma-canteen/article6070505.ece
The cost of the Mars mission was 75million dollars which works out to roughly 3.5 Indian Rupees per head which truly is chicken feed for India. For India it is no longer the money that matters, but holding the head high by all round advancement that matters and the day is well on its way.
@Abdul Malik He is a taxi driver, like a lot of his compatriots in the US.
This is a historic moment for the sub-continent. Another notable feature of this success as reported in the press:
there’s a crucial band of women, working across the entire range of India’s space program, that comprise about 20% of ISRO’s total workforce of 14,246 employees. About 10% of the total staff, or 1,654, are women engineers.
@Flight o its called learning. You learn as you go. its called experience. You put experience to work. its called success. Its success hence it makes you jealous. Period.
@Kartik Stop offering them hand of friendship. Has any Pakistani here offered this gesture to Indians. Let them(Pakistanis) stew in their own self imposed juices.
@Ahmed of (Gitmo?) USA. Your may enjoy the huge and free meals that you get where you live, but the Indian child you write about will never give up his mother's "mehanath ka kamayi" for your kind of free grub.
@Rajesh Very touching comments! Great
@Taimoor Khan You won't be alive to see how realistic is india's ballistic missile once it landed in pakistan.......
My dream is to set up a SAARC space agency and work together for the development of human mankind like what Europian Agency is doing. I hope the SAARC countries will thing in this way.
@Flight o :-) I can only offer this :-)
@Ahmed USA - Don't be envious Mr.Ahmed,- 24 hours power cut and bomb blast, - Pakistani politicians blame India for not helping flood affected Kashmir people- killing minority personnel in the jail by police officer- you people never see the positive side of world- India know how to eradicate poverty- India is not like your faild state therefore we can not expect a comment nothing more than this
648 comments!!!! WOW!!!!!!!! Thank you DAWN and all the Pak well wishers.
@Ahmed USA
Money and wealth is not as important as peace of Mind.. Just check all the mental hospital in USA are crowded and there is no place while such type of hospital is India and Pakistan are vacant..scientific development and economic growth runs hand in hand.I admit that Inda has some economic problem due to 1.2 Billion population that is why we do our scitenticfic work economically prefect.. we not invest like Nasa..Grow as a human....
Thank you Mangalyaan, My friend FIROZ call me from Pakistan after 7 yrs
@Dr. Salaria, Aamir Ahmad
Congrats to Indian ppl and scientists
@Flight of fancy You really live up to your name don't you? Just watch the TV footage of the control center and tell me if you can spot a single face that is not Indian.( Unless you are suggesting that the Israeli and Russian scientists were remotely controlling the MOM from their respective countries.) The entire project was conceived, planned and executed by Indian scientists who were paid Indian salaries and that is why it was so cost effective. Please do your home work.
Congratulations to our scientists at ISRO.
It is heartening to note that majority of Pakistanis have expressed pleasure on success of Indians Mars Mission.
Nothing great about India. Nothing great about Mangalyaan. Seems like a great yarn.
It is utter shamelessness and show of disregard for its poor citizens by India. 74 Mn dollars is equivalent 444 crores indian currency. This money could have fed millions of poor people in the country.
@Feroz - Well said Feroz. Jai ho..!
@Anand What is your full Name Anand Shah or Khan :P
@Ahmed USA Food does not grow on Mars lol.....but it will create job oppurtunities for millions when india become leading country in satellite delivery and space exploration and will put food on millions of tables. Look for bigger picture friend,
This was an addictive post by Dawn and I am not surprised I am back to check new messages. Also not surprised by western media's criticism of ISRO's achievement.
http://m.firstpost.com/india/why-western-criticism-of-indias-mars-mission-is-blatant-racism-1224419.html. what do you think?
The flurry of congratulations from Pakistani friends for me symbolize a growing shift in attitudes in Pakistani society spearheaded by its young, educated and aware people. Thanks for responding so well and for sharing India's pride.
Congratulations to India. Not to take anything away from India but want to mention, you were successful the first time because you learned from other's failed experiences. When US was sending these probes out they were trying out things for the first time.
@Faisal: China failed just recently in 2011 for Mars mission... what do you say about them???
@sidhu : I think its better if we should pay attention on getting better education or health care. The people are born, lived and even died on footpaths and we are happy in making such lucrative expenses for nothing. What if we land on moon or mars does it can change the miserable life of an average indian...think upon it
