ISLAMABAD: Minister for Finance Senator Ishaq Dar on Sunday cautioned Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief Dr Tahirul Qadri against misleading the people by asking them to scribble on currency notes.
“Scribbling or writing on currency notes is illegal and would render them useless,” said the minister in a statement.
He said such notes would neither be acceptable as legal tender by the business community for trading of goods and commodities nor by the banks.
The minister urged the people not to pay any heed to such calls from those who he claimed had already inflicted incalculable loss to the national economy and were “now trying to rob the people of their hard earned money.”
Dr Qadri, earlier today, had launched a movement by writing “go Nawaz go” on currency notes and urged the masses to follow him.

“I ask 180 million people of Pakistan to launch this movement … write go Nawaz go on every currency note,” he said while addressing participants of his party’s ‘Inquilab sit-in’ in the federal capital.
Qadri, along with Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan, had been protesting in front of the parliament to force resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif over the Model Town incident and alleged rigging in the 2013 general elections.
Several rounds of talks have failed to resolve now the month-long crisis as protesters want nothing less than Sharifs’ ouster and fresh polls.
‘Inscription, slogans will demonitise currency’
Meanwhile, a spokesman of State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said that the value of any currency note will cease upon any inscription or writing of a slogan on it and such a currency note will be wasted.
He further said that no bank will accept any currency note with a slogan inscribed on it and such a note will not be valid even for any transaction.
Traders reject call to inscribe slogans on currency notes
Karachi's business community has rejected the call by Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) chief Tahir-ul-Qadri to inscribe slogans on currency notes.
Talking to the APP here on Sunday, Ateeq Mir, the chairman of the All-Karachi Tajir Itihad said that inciting people to inscribe political slogans on currency notes may hurt the economy.
Such an illegal practice will make notes useless, because such notes cannot be used in business dealings, he added.
While Pak Alliance Market Association Jama Cloth President Tanvir Bari said that the State Bank of Pakistan has warned that currency notes carrying any such inscription or slogan will not be accepted.
He lamented that the sit-ins in the federal capital have badly affected business activities in the country.
All Karachi Anjuman-e-Tajiran President Rafiq Jadoon said no one would pay heed to Qadri's call for writing slogans on notes.
Pervez asks Qadri to disfigure Canadian currency first
Federal Minister for Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage Senator Pervez Rasheed on Sunday asked Dr Tahirul Qadri to first disfigure the Canadian currency notes by writing slogans and get them encashed.
The Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) chief, he said, would not do so as he knew that the Canadian banks would not accept such notes.
The minister, in a statement, said writing anything on currency notes rendered them valueless as per law. Thus the scribbled currency notes, he added, were not legal tender and could not be deposited in banks for transactions.

This is not possible because the cashier of the bank counts the notes by looking at the right side of the notes. Go Nawaz Go is either on the left side or back side. So dont worry and continue with this kind of protest

* Why make it a big deal if someone writes on the currency as long as it is not intentionally defaced. I know writing "Go Obama Go" wont render valueless the dollar bill.... our govt. people act so paranoid.

if majority of people write go nawaz go on currency notes the state bank will be forced to accept notes because state bank can not print new notes and replace it will older ones. and if the state bank prints more money then the rupee will get devalued so Nawaz sharif time to pay for the countless hours you kept this nation without electricity.

Ask 180 million to write on their foreheads "Go Nawaz Go" or "I am an idiot" and it is okay. @shoukat Your logic is flawed. If you write on the currency, the person you're giving it to may refuse to take it. This means the one holding the currency note destroyed his own wealth. To recover that wealth this person might have to go to the state bank and get this damaged currency note exchanged for a new one. State bank takes the note in and gives the new out. No change in the supply of money, hence no inflation. I must add your understanding of money and its effect on currency devaluation is better than that of many. Congratulations.

If there is a Law that says scribbling on Currency will render them useless then why we find so many notes with different scribbling in the Market, most having handwritten numbers etc? Even the Foreign Currency dealers mark foreign currency with very small stamp to establieh it was issued by them, those notes are acceptable in foreign Countries, Stains & Scribbling on currency notes has always been observed all over the World but accepted by Banks,as a matter of fact King Nawaz's Accountant is misleading the people of Pakistan not TUQ. I think the government is wrong by saying that scribed notes would be not accepted by the banks.
Here in UK i often see writing or counting figures on the notes. Some times they are defaced and only joined by sellotape.The banks are not bothered about it.But then obviously everything is different in Pakistan & specially when politics are involved. Pakistani ministers make their own unique rules different than the rest of the world when it suits them.The rules are made as they go along.

Its a legal tender. If people are writing something on the currency notes and if the banks refused to accept, then who's money is lost? Then, people will blame SBP for not accepting these notes instead of those who are writing on it. The government can replace these notes by printing fresh ones but as a result, inflation will surely rise and eventually common man will suffer. But most of all, everything has a cost associated with it and printing notes has its own cost and this will be borne by the people of Pakistan.

KOLKATA: Will banks accept soiled notes or scribbled notes from January 1, 2014? The answer is yes, but only to provide you fresh notes. The State Bank of Pakistan is committed to exchange notes even if they are cut in two pieces as long as the currency number is in-tact.

Pressure tactics. I have seen dollar bills scribbled on in the US and every one accepts them. The rupee is not even genuine since it is just printed paper by the corrupt government without any backing. Its value is zero any way so scribbling will not de-value it any further.

Just a couple of points:
Many a time, I've taken money from banks in Pakistan with some sort of writing inscribed on some notes? It's a common practice in cash businesses, so why weren't people made aware of this before now?
I think every currency note has a state bank guarantee on it. So unless the state bank has something in its rule bank about such writing, no court on this planet could rule in favour of the state bank.
Having said this, a country where the interior minister and opposition leader claim to have solid proof for each other's corruption, but everyone claps instead of demanding an investigation into their hiding evidence against corruption, anything is possible.

Nawaz Sharif must be laughing and dancing with joy when he heard Tahirul Qadri asking people to scribble on currency notes. This show how ignorant Tahirul Qadri is on economics. Anyone who know a little economic understands that a currency note is a debt which government must pay to the currency holder. Let me put in a simple way. You work for the government and the government pay your hard work by issuing you a salary in the form of currency. The bank must honor your currency by law. However, if you write or scribble on currency notes, it would render them useless. Now the government has an excuse not to accept the currency. This means you have paid your government an extra tax by destroying your currency note. Qadri and IK was telling people not to pay taxes but now they are telling them to pay an indirect tax.
Remember when government does not have money they start printing extra currency which increases inflation. Given the dire condition of national economy, the State Bank will be looking at any excuse not to honor rupees. The people are falling into the trap of Qadri to throw away their hard earned money. I sense a collusion of Qadi and NS to rob poor people of Pakistan.
Having said this, defacing or destroy the foreign currency however, will hurt the country because we have bought foreign currency from our exports.

Go Nawaz Go can be written on the margin of the note with a thin marker. So don't worry, this will not damage the note and can be used as a protest against the cruel rulers who have occupied the govt through unfair means.

lets assume all tuq fans excluding the paid protstesters are around 168 people. all of them having say 200 rupees each. plus lets add those 25 rupees of tuq himself as he uses $. its not considerable amount of money.so why to worry. ik fans can only write on facebook, as they do not exist in real, physically i mean. ns should take it as compliment. itsounds more as go ns go for it, u can do it. rather than go ns go away. redbull gave me wings. go chacha go for 1 more redbull. dont print it editor. its for ur personal entertainment

Very dangerous statement from Dar and SBP. Large number of currecny notes are already scibbled with something or other. Common people will suffer when their currency is not accepted after this statement, which has very serious implications.
