Freedom of speech

Published September 10, 2014

THERE is no denying the fact that the free media has made a valuable contribution to society by creating political awareness among the masses, empowering them to use their freedom of speech.

I feel, there should be proper legislation to protect this freedom of speech and a remedy available if someone abuses this freedom.

Pakistan’s political landscape in recent days has become heated to put it mildly.

Supporters of both sides are aggressively advocating the political stance of their respective camps and using unparliamentary language. Sadly, many are oblivious to the detrimental impact of their offensive remarks on personal relationships, friendships and professional environment.

I urge the supporters of both parties to behave in a civilised manner and show maturity and restraint. I also request the management of all organisations engaged in public dealing to ban discussion of politics at the workplace.
