MUZAFFARGARH: Former MPA Safina Saima Arbi Khar alleges that her son mistreated her and threw her out of home after she refused to transfer her inherited land to him.

Ms Khar, the widow of former MNA Arbi Khar and sister-in-law of Mustafa Khar and MNA Rabbani Khar, told Dawn on Wednesday that her son Shahnawaz Khar had been pestering her for quite sometime to transfer her land and other immoveable property to him.

Arbi Khar died last year and is survived by two sons -- Shahnawaz and Zakariya Khar -- and a widow.

She said she had contacted Islamabad Inspector General Sikandar Hayat for action but in vain.

She said that she arrived in their native town of Khar Gharbi on Wednesday to commemorate the first death anniversary of Arbi when her elder son again raised the property issue.

Soon the arguments turned into a physical brawl and she was thrown out of the house. She said Shahnawaz was not her stepson and she had arranged his education in Pakistan and the US.

She appealed to human rights activists and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan for her safety. She said the late Arbi had divided his property among his sons and her according to the law.

Former governor Mustafa Khar told Dawn that some of his servants had informed him about the mistreatment of his sister-in-law and he rushed to the scene to rescue her.

Women’s rights activist Mukhtar Mai said that Ms Khar was a standing example of women’s mistreatment over inheritance or property issues.

Shahnawaz Khar could not be reached for comment as his mobile phone was powered off. Sources said Ghulam Mustafa Khar and his servants also thrashed Shahnawaz Khar. Mustafa Khar denied allegations.

Ms Khar was elected MPA on reserved seat from the PPP platform in 2008.
