Court installs Gavaskar as interim BCCI chief

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court installed batting legend Sunil Gavaskar as the interim head of India's troubled cricket board Friday in place of the scandal-tainted incumbent N. Srinivasan.

Gavaskar would be made “interim working president” of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the court said, adding that the appointment would place him in overall charge of the upcoming edition of the annual Indian Premier League which begins next month.

The court said that Gavaskar would have to cease his work as a television commentator to avoid any conflict of interest, adding that the BCCI must “adequately compensate” Gavaskar for loss of earnings as a result.

The court also said that the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, two teams at the centre of investigations into illegal betting and spot-fixing, would be allowed to take part in this year's IPL.

Judges had said on Thursday that both sides should be barred from the eight-team tournament which is to start in Abu Dhabi on April 16.

While I am happy that Srinivasan is gone but I am not sure whether Gavaskar has the courage to make sweeping changes required. He never spoke against Srinivasan or on the illegalities carried out, He always played it safe and kept quite succumbing to the contracts signed. He should have raised his voice.In fact even in the interview yesterday, he was so careful in answering that he wanted to save his current job in case if he does not get the top job. Opportunist may be the harsh word but that is who he is going by the definition of it..Instead of Srinivasan, it will eventually be Gavaskar regime with same rules.

Hats off to SC of India, not only decision on removing the BCCI President but for installing Sunil Gavaskar. I hope he will stay for long as he thoroughly deserve the position. In my opinion his contribution to cricket is much more than Tendulkar. I am also sure he will work to improve cricketing relations with Pakistan. Best of luck.......

Good, SriNavasan is gone. Gavaskar can do good to cricket. At least he has been a sportsman himself so it is expected that he will keep his heart clean.

@Tanveer Abbasi: Relations with Pakistan will not improve because Gavaskar will be IPL chairman still the BCCO chair will be Navasan, 2nd Gavaskar cannot invite Pakistan cricketers that is a decision for the foreign office to make which they will never allow.

Gavaskar is excellent person to head BCCI but it will be shame to have Srinivasan with match fixing track record to be ICC Chairman.It seems ICC leaders Australian and England ECB Presidents received financial gains from match fixing Srinivasan CSK team.Otherwise how can he be Chairman with such shabby background.Cricket has been hit by cancer of match fixing with epi center around Srinivasan.
