KARACHI, June 8: The Karachi police have decided to set up anti-extortion cell in all the police stations in the city to eliminate the menace of extortion.

“To begin with, these cells will be set up in police stations located in industrial and commercial areas,” the IG Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah, said while speaking to members of the Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers Association here at a dinner on Thursday night.

He assured them that efforts would be made, with the assistance of the government and the health department, to provide prompt medical aid to the injured in medicolegal cases. He said it would be ensured that private hospitals entertained medicolegal cases.

He said a campaign to replace silencers of rickshaws would begin on June 16. Initially, silencers to control noise and air pollution would be fixed in 1,500 rickshaws. These silencers, which were of international standard and inexpensive, would be fitted in all rickshaws in 5-6 months.

Mr Shah said the traffic police would launch a campaign, through the government-controlled electronic media, from June 13 to create public awareness of traffic rules and regulations. He said joint teams of the traffic police and Radio Pakistan would approach people to elicit their comments besides radio would broadcast the latest traffic situation in the city.
