BUDAPEST A student at the Scientific University of Pecs in southern Hungary opened fire on his classmates on Thursday, killing one person and wounding three, the university said.

“The students at the biophysics research institute were in a pharmacy class when one of their colleagues began shooting,” university spokesman Zoltan Gyorffy said.

A female student was killed in the shooting, which took place at 1130 am (1030 GMT). Two students and a cleaning lady were wounded, two of them critically, Gyorffy added.

The 23-year-old gunman was detained by the police, but his motives were still unclear.

He was caught on the seventh floor of another university building, Gyorffy said.

In a statement, Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.—AFP
