Mahar-Jatoi dispute resolved

SUKKUR, Feb 7: The long-running Mahar-Jatoi tribal dispute was resolved on Friday night, with a jirga imposing a fine of Rs8.3 million on Jatoi clan and Rs3.3 million on Mahar tribe.

The verdict was announced in respect of the killings that had taken place between the two feuding tribes in Shikarpur and Ghotki districts over the last three years.

The Mahar clan had 27 of its men killed whereas Jatoi tribe lost 11.

Each victim’s family will be paid Rs300,000 in compensation.

The heirs of the first victim, Muhammad Saleh Mahar, will receive Rs500,000.

The Ameen of the jirga decided that a verdict about the injured, and those who had lost their property and heads of cattle, will be announced on March 8 after assessment of their damages.

It was further decided that a fine of Rs5 lakh will be imposed on anyone who, from amongst the two clans, started a clash and will be liable to be booked under the law.
