Its a lovely picture. This is the only stage of their life when they can actually enjoy their reflection without asking of it too many difficult questions. I miss Lahore and her summers. I miss mangoes milkshake, False ka sharbat, Rabri wala dood and a benign 'soota' in the park during evenings.

What is wrong with checking one's reflection in the mirror? Looking presentable is a right of every individual, regardless of social class, age or any other classification.

well for one thing rich or poor everyone has the right to look in a mirror. also, if u look into a mirror there is nothing wrong with that at all. To answer your question it is quite simple why people look into the mirror. In a practical sense one looks in the mirror to make your hair, to shave, to brush your teeth, to see if there is no scars or brusises on the face, etc. Psychologically people look into the mirror to see are they presentable enough for job, school, or a date. How can they improve themselves? Also, one can see if they are getting fat or not so they can try to lose weight or if they are too thin and can see their bone and jaw structure how to gain weight, etc. On other ocassions people look into the mirror to motivate themselves before for example an interview, rehersal, concert, exam, presentation, and speak positively to themselves to build up confidence and self-esteem. This can also be for motivating oneself when a tragedy has occured maybe someone they know has died, or is injured, etc or they feel guilty about something so look into the mirror for some soul searching etc. It depends on person to person. Yes some people are too obessed with their looks maybe an ego problem, insecurity, etc. I don't know. Also, this may sound stupid but as a person cannot see themselves they look at a mirror to see what they acutally look like.

One looks into a mirror to see how one is as an image seen by all around us. One can try and one often does add to it a patina of all sorts such as ego brushing up, angle of pose, a zest of conscious charm, a bit of manliness, a whiff of womanliness, a sniff of boysih or girlish budding. Have you not seen birds fluttering above a mirroring pond of water to impress the flock?

I bet they are making fun of the actors by mimicking their hairstyles, like Rangeela, or Waheed Murad, oh but wait, we are Pakistanis, so they must be mimicking the Indian film stars, Bachan, Shahrukh etc.

I think this is an outstanding picture.... It reminds me of the simplicity more than anything else, I think the mirror just became a reason of discussion here, however, to me this picture is all about the simplicity, the innocence these boys have and are showing.... unaware that the entire world would be watching this picture and perhaps even hold a debate on this. What i'd like to know Hasaan is that were you able to get these boy's contact information, perhaps pass them on this picture, or maybe one day, perhaps 10 yrs from now, these boys can look at this picture, no matter where they are in their lives and just reminisce

The photo is really good and start of the blog is good to. I have heard the song sharona but this never compelled me to determine the insights of the song. Blog represents the way writer has depicted this scene and explained in his words a good effort but this is a casual practice in Pakistan in suberbs of the city Karachi that boys and girls walk to school and on their way they could have this scene taken up by the photographer.

I guess this is one point where every person from a social class likes to look good. Though a very harsh representation of such a nice snap

I really like the picture. Looking in the mirror is a great thing. This is one of the few things poor can afford to do freely in Pakistan. So, let's not criticise them. Instead we need to arrange such mirrors for our leadership. Though many of them might be doing it every morning. But some one told me that most of them do make up.

Whenever you look into the mirror say,"O Allah!Just as you made me beautiful,also make my character beautiful.Aamen!"

Actully quite a wonderful snap shot. Reminding me of that wonderful line from Keats, "Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive but to be young was very heaven. Alas, with all in flux, so does pass the youth. So the celeberation ought to be muted. Soon these young fellows will be heading for school dividing their times between education and vocational training. If they are lucky, they may learn to connect the dots between the land of land of Mohenjadoro and Harapa and the land of what is referred to as the "truncated Pakistan", a term given after the 1971 civil war. If they remain lucky, they will discover the flaws and defeciencies that led to the downfall of a united Pakistan. The burden of history may be too harsh for the young to bear. But, as the Founding Father Mr. Jinnah had foreseen, the Pakistanis are a resilient lot. With imagination and with fortitude, these young fellows could rise to the occassion and fulfill the Founder's hope. And that means standing tall in front of the mirror.

How about less bollywood crap? A person who has seen a good Hollywood movie will never turn towards bollywood movies.

So that means most of the people in the sub-continent havent seen a good Hollywood movie. Anyways - recently many Bollywood movies (including 3 idiots) have broken into top 10 in the U.S. Hollywood has wiped out the movie industry of many countries - but has hardly been able to make a dent in India - atleast that is commendable !

True, I can not disagree with you. This is why I said " a GOOD" hollywood movie. and my generalization about Bollywood stands because 99% of what they produce is junk and pilferaged material.

Dude, that is a point less argument. Let me tell you what makes Bollywood successful. Numbers. Equation closed. But thankfully, there are many sane individuals in the world who realize Numbers is NOT EQUAL to Quality, and therefore they will gladly prefer Johnny Depp any day over Shahrukh Khan's uni-dimensional acting. And if there was an American diaspora by the millions in India as well, I am sure Hollywood movies would have more than dented your movie industry ! :)
