MITHI, March 9: A condolence reference for the late Dr Harchand Rai Lakhani Suthar was held at the Tharparkar Press Club on Friday night by the ‘Dr Harchand Rai Lakhani Memorial Committee’.
Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, former Sindh minister Rana Hamir Singh recalled that the late doctor, who died on March 4, had been awarded the Tamgha-i-Imtiaz in 2007 in recognition of his services. He said that Dr Harchandrai was a physician par excellence and would always be remembered by the TB centre he had set up in Umerkot.
Noted intellectual and columnist Nek Mohammad remarked that besides being a great social worker, Dr Rai had played a unique role in preserving ancient traditional culture. The columnist said that the doctor had been a man of high moral standing and had lived a simple and pious life. He remembered that the doctor always stood up while meeting people, even when he had grown old.
The gathering passed a resolution to establish Dr Rai Corner in the Institute of Sindhology, Hyderabad.
The resolution also included the committee’s resolve to name a hospital ward after the late doctor in Mithi or Umerkot and include a chapter on his personality in school syllabus.
