KARACHI, Dec 10: Acknowledging the services of NED University of Engineering and Technology’s vice chancellor, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan, chancellor of the public sector universities in the province, has left it to Abul Kalam whether to call it a day or continue as the head of the university as long as he desires, sources told Dawn.

The decision, according to sources, was taken at the Governor’s House on Monday after it received a list of four candidates for vice chancellorship by the search committee which interviewed candidates for the post of vice chancellor on Sunday.

“The vice chancellor can continue to serve the educational institution as long as he wishes,” the source said quoting the governor’s decision.

Mr Kalam has been heading the university since 1996. He has served four terms, each of four years, at the institution. The fourth tenure ended on Dec 8.

The four names recommended by the search committee are: Dr Muzaffar Mehmood (the current pro-vice chancellor of the university), Dr Afzal Haq (currently serving in Multan), Dr Nizamuddin Qureshi (director general of NED university academy) and Dr Mujibuddin Memon (Mehran engineering university).

All the four professors have expertise in mechanical engineering.
