KARACHI: Two policemen were suspended on Saturday over the alleged torture of a teenager in Surjani Town while an inquiry was also initiated after senior police officials took notice of the incident as its video went viral on social media.
West SSP Tariq Illahi Mastoi told Dawn that an allegation regarding the alleged torture of 17-year-old Shahid by police personnel was brought to his attention through social media.
Upon receiving the information, the SSP said he took immediate notice of the incident and directed DSP Surjani to visit the spot and conduct an inquiry without delay.
During the preliminary inquiry, the allegations of torture were found to involve two police personnel, Imran and Zain. Both were immediately suspended and detained at the police station pending further proceedings.
He said the preliminary investigation had revealed that the teenager had been detained on “fake charges” and kept in illegal custody.
“If the affected person or his family submits an application for registration of an FIR, the case will be registered promptly in accordance with the law,” Mr Mastoi said.
The SSP added that the teenager was now “stable” and had been sent for a medical examination.
Meanwhile, Addl IGP Karachi Azad Khan also took notice of the alleged torture and sought a report from DIG West.
