PESHAWAR, Nov 29: Pakistan People’s Party Khyber Pakhtunkhwa president Anwar Saifullah Khan has said that his party has roots in masses and could win coming general elections without alliance with any political party.

Speaking at a press conference at his residence here on Thursday, Mr Khan said that it was Awami National Party’s decision to part ways with the PPP otherwise he was comfortable with its leaders. On this occasion former provincial minister Iftikhar Mohmand announced joining the PPP.

Mr Khan claimed that PPP co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari had empowered him to take the decision about solo flight in next general election and there would be no change in his stand.

He welcomed Mr Mohmand into the PPP and said that it would emerge as the largest party in next elections and form government in the province. However, he said that they might need support of 15-20 members for forming government.

The PPP provincial president said that efforts were being made to bring all annoyed workers and leaders back into the party’s fold.

About construction of Kalabagh Dam, he said that it was a technical matter, but some people made it a political issue. He said that construction of new dams was need of the hour, as the country could face food insecurity in future. He said that new dams should be constructed with national consensus.

“Those opposing Kalabagh Dam on the ground that it will drown Nowshera should keep in mind that 2010 flash floods had badly affected the district,” he said.

Briefly speaking, Mr Mohmand claimed that he joined the PPP for the sake of democracy and wanted to play his role for development of the province.

JAAC ban

Though the JAAC’s demands are open to scrutiny, banning any political organisation — as long as it remains committed to peaceful activism — is undemocratic.
