KARACHI, Sept 19: Three robbers, two of them armed, on Wednesday took away Rs1.8 million and a motorcycle from a bank in Nazimabad without facing any resistance from two armed guards posted at the branch, police said.

The officials added that the robbery at the BankIslami branch situated in Nazimabad No 3 within the remit of the Shamim Shaheed police post was this year’s 13th bank heist in the city.

“The robbers did not bother to snatch the repeater rifle from the two guards who did not act at all,” said SP Liaquatabad Division Salman Hasan.

They first went to the cash counter and collected around Rs100,000. Later, they asked an officer to open the strong room from where they collected around Rs1.7 million.

“They had come without transport. One of the robbers asked the officer for the keys of his vehicle. Instead of saying he didn’t have one, the officer took out the keys from a drawer and guided the suspects to his motorcycle parked outside the branch,” said SP Hasan, adding that the robbers sped away on the motorcycle.

The staff did not choose to press the alarm button which could have alerted a police mobile stationed nearby, the SP noted.

The closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the bank were out of order for the past few days, and the bank staff already had made a complaint to the authorities concerned, he added.

Till filing of this report, FIR of the robbery had not been registered.
