THIS is apropos of the letter ‘GAT for PhD studies’ (March 6) by Ayaz Ahmad. It is a matter of concern that a university teacher shows resentment over the standardized GAT subject test for PhDs. I am of the opinion that clearance of this test must also be made mandatory for university teachers on a yearly basis in order to ensure quality education in the higher education academies.
It is worth mentioning that some university teachers seeking admissions to PhD programme could not qualify the GAT subject test held on Feb 19. This state of affairs shows poor standard of education at university level, and if the subject being taught on the master level could not be cleared by a teacher, his performance evaluation becomes very much mandatory.
In my opinion, GAT subject test is a suitable and accurate evaluation standard for a scholar seeking admission to PhD programme. HEC authorities should introduce the performance evaluation process for the already employed university teachers through GAT subject test so that students get quality education while poor performance by university teachers is curbed.
