KARACHI, Jan 16: In what police described as a sectarian killing case, assailants shot dead a newly recruited policeman in the Bara Maidan area on Monday.

The police said that 27year-old Ghulam Muhammad was passing through the Bara Maidan area on his motorcycle when the assailants targeted him near Alamgir Market and fled.

They said that the victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds in the neck and the chest and died on the spot.

The body was shifted to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

The officerincharge ofthe Paposh Nagar police post, Sub-Inspector Asim Siddiqui, said that the victim was recruited to the police department in 2011 and was currently posted at the Ajmer Nagri police headquarters as a police constable.

He said an initial investigation suggested that it was a sectarian killing case. His family also told the police that he had no political affiliation and there was no enmity between him and any individual, he added.

The victim lived in North Nazimabad's Block Q, but originally hailed from GilgitBaltistan.

The funeral prayer was offered in Pahar Ganj and he was buried in Wadi-e-Salam, a graveyard in Surjani Town, the police said.
