KARACHI, Dec 20: Armed robbers took away $20,000 — roughly equal to Rs1.8 million — from the manager of a foreign exchange company in the Clifton area on Tuesday, police said.

They said that the robbers, who were travelling in a vehicle bearing government registration number GS-7315, intercepted the car of the exchange company’s manager, Muhammad Fayyaz, in Clifton’s Block 7 within the remit of the Boat Basin police station.

They said that at least three robbers came out of their vehicle, held the manager and two private security guards at gunpoint, snatched $20,000 and escaped.

The police said that the two guards sitting in the car did not try to retaliate as the armed robbers held them at gunpoint and snatched their two TT pistols before grabbing the cash from the manager. The robbers escaped along with the snatched weapons and the cash, they added.

Clifton SP Tariq Dharejo told Dawn that the manager had already visited some other banks branches and he came out from the last branch located at Khayaban-i-Tauheed before the robbers struck.

He claimed that the police managed to obtain the CCTV footage of the snatching incident from the surveillance cameras installed on the arteries near the crime-scene.Till late in the night, no case regarding the dacoity was registered with the Boat Basin police station.
