THATTA, Sept 12: Seventy-eight flood-affected families arrived in Makli on Monday where a tent city was being set up.

They have migrated from Tarai, Roshanabad and Pangrio areas of district Badin where continuing heavy rains paralysed life.

Comprising over 250 members, the families belonged to the clans of Mallah, Khaskheli and Samejo.

They told Dawn that the entire rural area of Badin had been submerged and water was gushing out of various drains and sub-drains including Left Bank Outfall Drain.

The administration started evacuation of stranded people from Khoski, Golarchi, Tarai and Shadi Large, shifting them to the neighbouring district of Thatta.

Four of the women, who were reluctant to tell their names, were pregnant and many of the children and elders were infected with viral eye diseases.

The tent city is being set up within the yards of the newly-constructed district jail in Thatta on the Ghulamullah Road with the assistance of NGOs.

The families have been dumped into the office block.

Thatta DCO Mohammad Jaffar Abbasi told Dawn that electricity, food, water and other accessories were being provided to the IDPs.

Meanwhile, torrential rains, which resumed at 5:10 pm and continued till filing of this report, played havoc in Thatta, Sujawal, Mirpur Bathoro, Jhoke Sharif, Jati, Gujjo and Gharo.

In Thatta town, the National Highway, Shahi Bazaar, Doctors Street, Bukhari Mohalla, Missan Mohalla and other low-lying area have been submerged under knee-deep water.

At hilly towns of Jangshahi and Jhampir, the rains brought a sigh of relief during the hot spell.
