THE Flood Inquiry Commission set up on the orders of the Supreme Court has said in its report that the Tori Bund near Jacobabad was neglected for years, due to which its height decreased to a dangerous level. Dams and bunds need proper care and maintenance to work in a proper way.

If the Tori Bund was given attention and repaired, the loss to Pakistan in the shape of floods could have been avoided. The maintenance work should also be durable enough that the repaired dam or bund could bring desired results.

At the onset of floods, it’s vital that we give due attention to the repair of bunds, barrages and dykes.

The Sukkur Barrage that was constructed during British times withstood the might of 1.1 million cusecs of water passing through its gates. It was primarily due to the quality repair during 2005 by the Frontier Works Organisation that the barrage was able to resist the might of the devastating floods. It also reflects that we do not require any rocket science but just quality work to be executed with dedication and sincerity.
