RAWALPINDI, July 2: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Saturday recorded the statement of Sheharyar Taseer in the assassination case of his father, Salman Taseer.

ATC-II Judge Syed Pervaiz Ali Shah adjourned the hearing till July 9.

During the in-camera trial at Adiala Jail, in his statement Mr Sheharyar informed the court that he got information about the assassination of Punjab Governor from the electronic media. He said on his complaint on January 4 police registered a case against Elite Force's Mumtaz Hussain Qadri for killing his father outside a restaurant in Islamabad's Kohsar Market.

He was cross examined by defence lawyers, Raja Shujahur Rehman and Malik Rafique. They asked if Mr Sheharyar had written the application for registering the case with his own hands or someone else wrote it. He said he did not write the application but he was aware of its content.

On the behalf of prosecution, Saiful Malook Advocate appeared before the court.In the courtroom, Mumtaz Qadri, his father and brother were also present. Chanting slogans against the government and carrying portraits of Mumtaz Qadri, a group of Sunni Tehrik activists was present outside the jail.
