Ajmal Pahari remanded in police custody

KARACHI, March 29: A suspect was remanded in police custody on Tuesday by two judicial magistrates in four cases.

Shahnawaz alias Ajmal Pahari was booked for attempted murder, encounter and possessing/storing illicit weapons and explosive material.

The crime investigation department of the Sindh Police claimed to have arrested the suspect after a shoot-out in New Karachi on Monday, alleging that he was also involved in more than 100 cases of targeted killing.

The CID police produced the suspect before the judicial magistrate (central) in two cases registered under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty) and 324 (attempt to commit qatl-i-amd) of the Pakistan Penal Code and 13-D of the Arms Ordinance.

The court handed him over to the CID police on physical remand till April 2.

The suspect was also produced before the judicial magistrate (west) to obtain his remand in two more cases registered under Sections 13-E of the Arms Ordinance and 4/5 of the Explosive Substance Act. The magistrate remanded him in police custody till April 2.—Staff Reporter

Cities improvement plan reviewed

SINDH Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah was informed that six cities — Sukkur, New Sukkur, Rohri, Khairpur, Shikarpur and Larkana — have been included in the first phase of the Sindh Cities Improvement Programme.

The CM was presiding over a meeting the other day. He was informed that an amount of $400 million would be spent on the improvement of infrastructure that included water supply, wastewater management, solid waste management and urban and municipal governance.

The infrastructure in Nawabshah, Naushehro Feroze, Moro, Sanghar, Tando Adam and Shahdadpur would be improved in the second phase while Mirpurkhas, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan and Matli would be in the third phase.

The CM noted that the situation was poor in most of the cities where there was no proper system of water supply and sanitation.

He directed the officials concerned to hold a meeting and review the progress of the project and submit a report within a week.

Chief Minister’s Adviser on Planning and Development Dr Kaiser Bengali, Additional Chief Secretary Ishaque Lashari, Finance Secretary Naveed Kamran Baloch and other officials also attended the meeting.—PPI

Need stressed for transparent investment of funds

SINDH Chief Secretary Abdul Subhan Memon has stressed the need for adopting a unique strategy for investing various funds in an adequate and transparent manner.

He said this while presiding over a joint meeting of the boards of the Sindh Social Relief Fund and the General Provident Investment Fund.

He noted that all rules and regulations must be followed in all activities, including the investment task under the Sindh Fund Management House (SFMH).

The meeting reviewed the proposed ways of investment.

Earlier, Finance Secretary Naveed Kamran Baloch briefed the meeting about the function of the SFMH.—PPI
