KARACHI: Defending champions Wapda and Pakistan Railways scored comprehensive wins as the National Women’s Hockey Championship got underway at the Hockey Club of Pakistan Stadium on Tuesday.

Captain Azra Bashir led the goal-fest for Wapda with nine goals, as they thumped Punjab Whites 12-0. Her goals came in the 8th, 9th, 12th, 21st, 27th, 34th, 61st and 65th minutes.

Meanwhile, Hina Kanwal scored 10 goals and Ayesha Bashir scored nine as Railways overran a weak Islamabad side 23-0 in the second match of the day. Other scorers included captain Sanam Yousuf, with three goals, and Sehrish Ghumman with one.

In another match, Sindh Whites overcame Balochistan 5-0, with goals from Rozina (two), Ambreen Hameed, Kiran Fatima and Asna.
