HARIPUR, Oct 24: Work on 21 uplift projects which were approved under the National Urban Development Project (NUDP) for six union councils of Haripur district are scheduled to begin by the end of the fiscal year , sources at the Tehsil Municipal Administration told Dawn here on Sunday.

The Asian Development Bank, according to the sources, had approved a credit of Rs2 billion under the National Urban Development Project for the seven Tehsil Municipal Administrations of the NWFP.

In Haripur, six union councils of Shumali, Central, Junoobi, Khalabat and Tarbela were selected to be provided with civic amenities.

Six schemes - treatment plant, sewerage system, carpeting of urban area roads, pavement of streets, replacement of old water supply lines and solid waste disposal plant - are to be completed in the first of the two phases of the NUDP.

Sources said that 20 per cent of the cost of these projects would be borne by the TMA of Haripur while the rest is to be funded by the ADB, which would be paid by the provincial government to the donor agency in 15 years.

Officials privy to the NUDP expressed the hope that after the completion of these projects the condition of civic amenities would be improved and would help control the water-borne diseases.

It was also reported that with the implementation of the NUDP schemes, the water rates for urban area union councils would be enhanced from Rs60 to Rs85 which is a precondition set by the donor agency.

The TMA had earlier proposed 100 per cent increase in the rates of water bills but the Tehsil council disapproved it. The TMA was also required to get rid of encroachments, which the administration had not fulfilled yet.
