Five killed in attack near Kandahar'

KANDAHAR, Dec 20: Four policemen and a militant were killed after insurgents opened fire on a security checkpoint from a moving vehicle in southern Afghanistan, police said Monday.

Four policemen were also wounded in the attack in Maywand district on the Herat-Kandahar highway late Sunday, Kandahar city police chief General Salim said. Gen Salim did not say if the attackers were suspected Taliban.

In southern Zabul province, two American soldiers were wounded by small arms fire during a gun battle with militants, a US military official said on Monday. -AFP
