HYDERABAD, June 16: A child fell victim to gastroenteritis here on Wednesday, raising the death toll from water-borne diseases to 41 in the district. Dr Naeem Kazi of the Hyderabad Civil Hospital confirmed the death of the eight-month-old child, Aza, son of Abdul Sattar.

Meanwhile, the Water and Sanitation Agency has received Rs70 million out of Rs120 million, promised by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad during a meeting with the district nazim in Karachi last week.

The governor had promised the fund in the wake of the water crisis in Hyderabad. It was learnt on Wednesday that District Nazim Dr Makhdoom Rafiquzzaman would preside over a meeting at his office on Thursday to discuss utilization of the amount.

When contacted, the EDO, finance and planning, and managing- director, Wasa, Habibur Rehman, confirmed the transfer of the amount to Wasa's account. WASA authorities had initially tried to desilt clarifiers of the filter plant by adopting manual method but failed as the clarifiers were heavily silted.

Now, desilting of the clarifiers and lagoons has been made a part of the Rs120 million package for which tenders are being issued. The Wasa managing-director said Hyderabad would face water shortage when work on the lagoons and clarifiers would begin as the clarifiers were the main source of supplying filtered water to the city.

CASE: The district and sessions judge, Zaheeruddin S. Leghari, on Wednesday adjourned hearing of the contaminated water case for July 3 after Kotri Barrage executive engineer Ejaz Shaikh sought time in the matter.

The court was to pass order in the matter today. Ayaz Latif Palijo had filed the application seeking action against Wasa and irrigation officials for supplying contaminated water to residents of Hyderabad, leading to deaths of several people, mostly infants.

NOTICE: The district and sessions judge has issued a show-cause notice to the central jail superintendent for not producing former Sindh Minister Qabool Mohammad Shah in the murder case of Fateh Jakhrani, son of a former sessions judge.

The court directed the investigation officer to submit his report in the matter on next date of hearing, July 7. The court fixed the bail application of the accused for July 18.

Qazi Talmizuddin, a highway department official, is the complainant in the case. He had suffered bullet injuries in the incident that took place on May 9 in the Mohammad Bux Shoro village, Baldia police station jurisdiction.
