MINGORA, Sept 7: Two security personnel were wounded when militants attacked an army base camp and a nearby police station in Kabal tehsil of Swat on Sunday, officials said.

The militants attacked the army base camp and Kabal police station with heavy weapons. In retaliation, the security forces resorted to indiscriminate mortar shelling, killing three people, a woman among them, and wounding 12 others, sources said.

An ISPR official, Colonel Mohammad Nadeem, said that militants attacked the base camp and police station in Kabal, which left one security man seriously injured. He said that the security forces had cordoned off the area and launched a search operation for the attackers.

Residents said that two shells hit the residential areas, damaging houses of Amir Rehman and Sayed Jalal, which killed three people and wounded 12 others. The dead also included a woman. Residents feared that casualties would increase.

According to a press release of the Swat Media Centre, the security forces targeted suspected hideouts of militants with mortar shells in Koza Bandai area of Kabal on Saturday night. No casualty has been reported so far.

The army dispatched four trucks loaded with edibles and medicines for the displaced people of Koza Bandai, who are staying in Bara Bandai. The edibles included 500 packets of rations containing flour, rice, sugar, ghee, tea and milk powder along with large quantity of commonly used medicines.

The civil administration along with the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) is concurrently working for the establishment of camps for the internally displaced people in Mingora.

The curfew was relaxed from 8am to 8pm in the Swat valley, the press release added.

TWO KILLED: In other incidents of violence, unidentified men gunned down Siraj and Zubair in different areas of Khwazakhela tehsil. The motives behind the killings could not be ascertained.
