RAWALPINDI, Dec 14: Interpol Riyadh (Saudi Arabia) has asked Islamabad if former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and her husband Asif Ali Zardari are on the government list of ‘wanted people’, Dawn has learnt.

In September this year, the Interpol headquarters in France inquired about the status of Ms Bhutto and if she still was a ‘wanted person’, after she had announced her plan to return to Pakistan on October 18.

When asked about the request made by Interpol Riyadh, Federal Investigation Agency director general Tariq Pervez said: “Yes Interpol Riyadh has inquired us about the status of red notices issued against Ms Bhutto, and we have asked the National Accountability Bureau to guide us so that we could respond.”

Answering a question, he said: “Any country can ask Pakistan to update it on the status of red notices issued against a person.”

The Interpol had issued the red notices against Ms Bhutto and Mr Zardari on a request of the government of Pakistan in January 2006.
