DHAKA, Aug 22: The government of Bangladesh has imposed curfew in six cities, including Dhaka, and closed all universities.

An official handout said the government imposed the curfew in view of the overall political situation of the country and it will remain imposed until further orders. All colleges in the six cities will also remain closed for an indefinite period, the press release said.

All residential halls of the universities will remain closed and the students have been asked to vacate the hostels.

The government measure came in the face of three days of continued student agitation, in Dhaka and elsewhere, demanding public apology by the army chief for beating up of students by soldiers in the Dhaka University and lifting of emergency.

Notably, on the third day of the agitation, hundreds of people joined the agitating students across the country.

During the three-day agitation, more than 300 students and 50 cops were injured, dozens of cars, including army jeeps, were burnt down and several business establishments, particularly an industrial complex owned by a member of the cabinet, came under attack.

Meanwhile, an official handout on Wednesday termed the agitation ‘unlawful’.
