GUJRANWALA, July 20: The government has yet to execute its plan regarding installation of water filtration plants in 188 union councils of Gujranwala, while five such plants installed in various parts of the city have broken down due to the neglect of the authorities concerned.

According to a survey report gleaned by Dawn, the staff deployed to take care of water filtration plants at Sheranwala Bagh, Farid Town, Saghir Shaheed Park, Janat Bibi Park and Wahdat Colony were absorbed in other towns after they went out of order.

TRADE POLICY: The Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) and other trade organisations have praised the government’s trade policy for 2007.

Speaking at separate meetings here on Friday, GCCI President Rana Shehzad Hafiz and Markazi Anjuman Tajran President Dr Mehmood Ahmed said the new trade policy would help boost the national economy. They said there were 150 trade organisations in Gujranwala and all of them had praised the new policy.

LIFE TERM: An anti-terrorism court on Friday gave life term to the killer of four people, including a former National Assembly member (MNA), and imposed a Rs400,000 fine on him.

The court also sentenced Saghir Hussain to 12 years in jail and imposed a Rs70,000 fine on him in other cases.

According to the prosecution, Hussain killed former MNA Syed Manzoor Hussain Shah of Kuleywala Syadan and his men Muhammad Iqbal, Ghulam Ali and Muhammad Ashraf Dar and injured Yasir Shah over a political dispute in Maken Lalla Musa village on January 2, 2005.
