HYDERABAD, July 6: As many as five points of 25.5-mile long dyke along River Indus within the revenue jurisdiction of Hyderabad district were declared vulnerable by Sindh irrigation officers on Thursday during a visit of the dyke with Hyderabad District Naib Nazim Zafar Rajput and DCO Aftab Ahmed Khatri.

The DCO advised the people especially residing inside the flood protective dyke to adopt precautionary measures and evacuate villages as soon as they receive information of flood in River Indus.

The naib nazim, the DCO and the officers inspected the position and measures adopted for strengthening dyke and security of people residing in and outside dyke.

Executive Engineer Kotri Barrage, Aijaz Shaikh informed the team that five parts of 25.5-mile long main front dyke one each at 12.5-mile point; from 7-9-mile; and from 3-4-mile point of Ghallian dyke; from 1-2-mile of Jamshoro dyke; and from 3-mile to 3/4-mile of Giddu dyke had been declared vulnerable during the survey conducted by the Irrigation Department with the help of Pakistan Army.

He also informed that a flood control centre with telephone#022-3877426, 3877403 and 3027656 had been set up at Kotri Barrage. He said that the situation along the dyke was under control and all precautionary measures had been taken to meet any eventuality.

Mr Rajput directed the irrigation officials to prepare fool-proof protective strategy so that lives and properties of area people could be saved.

He directed the officers that bulldozers, generators, stone bolder, sand bags, forest material and other required aabkalani articles should be made available, especially at vulnerable points in advance.

Besides, he asked the officers for establishing temporary landhis on the dyke to ensure round the clock vigilance and installation of wireless sets for effective communication among all stakeholders during flood emergency.

He also directed to keep provision of relief camps including medical support in case of evacuation due to flood threat. He said the district government will put all its machinery and manpower in the field to support irrigation department for protection of lives and property of people residing in and outside protective dyke.
