HYDERABAD, June 9: Department of anthropology and archaeology will be established in the University of Sindh and a proposal will be placed before the academic council of the university for approval.

This was decided at a high-level meeting held here on Friday. The Vice chancellor of the Sindh University, Mazharul Haq Siddiqui, presided over the meeting, which was attended by prominent educationist, Dr Habibullah Siddiqui, archaeologist Syed Hakim Ali Shah Bukhari, dean faculty of social sciences, Dr Rafia Ahmed Shaikh, Registrar Mohammad Saleh Rajar and others.

The meeting discussed in detail a proposal moved by the faculty of social sciences to set up the department of anthropology in the university and another proposal moved by the university's senate member, Dr Habibullah Siddiqui for opening a combined department of anthropology and archaeology in the university.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Habibullah Siddiqui said that opening of the department of archaeology is an old demand of the youth of Sindh and added that recently the federal government has also returned the archaeology department to the provincial government.

Therefore, he said, there is dire need of opening this department in Sindh University.

He further said that in Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur, the department of archaeology headed by Dr Neelofar Shaikh, is already functioning under the faculty of natural sciences.

Proposing opening of the department of anthropology and archaeology in the university, Dr Siddiqui said that a good response will be received and old demand of the youth will be met.

He said a large number of archaeological sites are located in the jurisdiction of university of Sindh.

Noted archaeologist, Syed Hakim Ali Shah Bukhari, informed the meeting that in foreign countries not only government but private firms are also working on archaeology.

He said that in Sindh there are 1,500 archaeological sites but due to unawareness these sites are likely to be damaged.

He said that three major components including cultural anthropology, physical anthropology and archaeology would cover the anthropology and added that archaeology is closely related to anthropology.

He also proposed the introduction of archaeology discipline in affiliated colleges of University of Sindh.

The university registrar, Mohammad Saleh Rajar informed the meeting that for establishment of the new department, proposal will be submitted by the concerned faculty and will be placed before the academic council and other forums.

The vice chancellor on this occasion constituted a committee comprising dean faculty of social sciences Dr Rafia Ahmed Shaikh, dean faculty of natural sciences, Dr M.Y.Khuhawar, Dr Neelofar Shaikh chairperson department of Archaeology of Shah Abdul Latif University Khairpur to finalise recommendations.

LUMHS: The controller of examinations, Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences Jamshoro, here on Saturday has announced that the last date for submission of examination forms of BSc nursing degree programme semester-II and IV, has been fixed as June 16, without late fee, while the last date for submission of examinations forms with a late fee of Rs200 has been fixed as June 23.

BISE: The controller of examination, Board of Intermediate of Secondary Education Hyderabad has announced here on Saturday that the practical examinations of HSC part-I and II (class XI and XII) in physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, statistics and home economic group will start from June 18, 2007.
