THATTA, March 15: The Thatta Heritage Society has urged the Thatta district government to build a fountain at the junction of Thatta and Makli to honour distinguished scholar Dr Anne-Marie Schimmel as an acknowledgment of her literary services and her profound love for Makli.Talking to thos correspondent, Prof Dr Mohammad Ali Manjhi, the society’s general secretary, said that the extraordinary scholar and author of ‘The Triumphal Sun’, ‘I am Wind, You are Fire’, ‘Pearls of Indus’ and lectures on Rumi’s Masnavi and the Quran and other works on Sufism had captured public imagination.

Criticising the extremist elements, he said that after her death, some religious elements in Thatta had opposed Dr Schimmel’s burial in Makli she had wished for. They said that the great scholar was buried in Germany, her home country, but honouring her last wishes, some people had installed a plaque in her memory at a site adjacent to the grave of Pir Hussamuddin Rashdi where she wanted to be buried.

He expressed the hope that Thatta District Nazim Shafqat Hussain Shah Shirazi would help materialise the token memorial for Dr Schimmel as it would also beautify the historical town of Makli.
