THATTA: Highway blocked

Published February 8, 2007

THATTA, Feb 7: Hundreds of activists of Sindh Taraqqi-Pasand Party (STP) blocked the National Highway near Gaggar Phatak on Wednesday in protest against land grabbing in the coastal talukas of Ghorabari and Mirpur Sakro.

The protesters, led by STP Vice-Chairman Ali Hassan Chandio and others, staged a sit-in on the highway and barricaded it with boulders suspending traffic for over an hour.

The leaders claimed that an industrialist and a builder had fraudulently changed khatas (property deeds) of hundreds of acres of state land in connivance with revenue staff to occupy the national property.

They demanded that the National Accountability Bureau take action against the land-grabbers. One was owner of an oil refinery and the other was a builder, they claimed.—Correspondent
