ISLAMABAD, Dec 22: The Rawalpindi Civil Lines police on Friday produced Rashid Rauf, accused of complicity in the plot to blow up transatlantic jets, before the judicial magistrate.

When Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Kalim Khan opened the case, the petitioner’s counsel, Hashmat Ali Habib, complained that the government had not provided copies of charge-sheet against Rashid Rauf and statement of witnesses recorded under section 161 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The magistrate directed the police that copies of the required papers be made available to the petitioner’s counsel.

The accused prayed before the magistrate that he be allowed meeting with his family members and relatives, which was accepted and was allowed to meet his relatives in the court premises.

A judge at an anti-terrorism court on Dec 13 dropped terrorism charges against Rauf relating to the conspiracy to detonate liquid explosives on jets flying from London to the United States in August.

Mr Rauf was facing charges of fraud, keeping fake identity card and forgery.

The case was deferred till Jan 5, 2007.

Talking to mediapersons, Mr Rauf said that allegations against him were concocted and baseless. He hoped that he would be released.

His father was also present during the hearing.
