HYDERABAD, Dec 5: Jamshoro thermal power house succeeded on Tuesday in making one of its four units operational after authorities shut down all the units a day ago in the wake of fire breakout in a unit.

The power house is still 400 megawatts short of its total electricity production of 540 MW, which it contributes to the national grid. With unit-IV operational it is now contributing around 170 megawatts.

Experts made Chinese unit-IV operational and efforts were under way to make Chinese unit-III functional as well by 2.30 am tonight, said an official source.

Chinese unit-II still remained closed after it caught fire due to a cable fault, said the source adding that they could not predict the extent of damages right now because it would require technical officials to examine it.

"That I can assure you that it’s not due to any sabotage activity or human error which caused the fire," he said.

The source said that a report had been sent to Wapda headquarters in Lahore as a matter of routine and soon a team of officials would arrive to ascertain damages to the gutted unit.

MMA RESIGNATIONS: Pakistan People’s Party Sindh General Secretary Nafees Ahmed Siddiqui has expressed fear resignations by Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) legislators will push the country into political crisis and provide the rulers an excuse to postpone general elections.

Talking to reporters at a local hotel on Tuesday Mr Siddiqui said that his party was ready to resign from assemblies with other opposition parties for the restoration of democracy, 1973 constitution and fair and transparent elections.Pakistan was facing the worst crisis of its history and unless power was handed back to the true representatives of people the country could not pulled out of it, he said.

He claimed that Ms Benazir Bhutto had never entered the corridors of power through backdoor and she would never ever make any deal with dictators.

To a question, he said that Ms Bhutto had categorically announced that she would return to the country and take part in general elections as soon as the election schedule was made public.

He appealed to the MMA legislators not to resign and provide an excuse to the government to postpone general elections for an indefinite period.

PPP, ARD and other opposition parties were united for the restoration of true democracy, supremacy of constitution and general elections in time and in a free, fair and transparent manner.

Replying to another question, Mr Siddiqui said that after the restoration of 1973 constitution, nobody would be able to stop Ms Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif from taking part in elections and becoming prime minister.
