HYDERABAD, Aug 17: The main areas in four union councils of the Qasimabad taluka have been submerged under rainwater with no immediate arrangements put in place by the Water and Sanitation Agency to drain out stagnant water.
The failure of Wasa to clear roads and streets of rainwater mixed with sewerage is in sharp contrast to directives issued by the district nazim on July 22, to cope with rain-related hazards.
A couple of days back, Wasa had released sewerage near villages of the Shoro community but it led to protests by villagers on the ground that their homes had been inundated.
Wasa officials said that sewerage was released on both these points near Qasim Shoro village and Indus river.
“We are virtually drowning. We have been requesting SDO Ghulam Qambar of Qasimabad to provide suction machine but he is not providing us. Otherwise provision of these machines could lead to our great facilitation”, said A.P. Soomro, president of the Naseem Deluxe colony which was completely inundated.
Accusing the SDO of financial malpractices, he alleged that each time it rained the residents had to face such situation.
UC-2 nazim Mehboob Abro said that Wasa had allocated nothing for the welfare of Qasimabad taluka and roads that had been recently constructed were being destroyed for want of proper drainage system.
“The managing-director of Wasa does not attend his cell phone to hear our complaints. He visits our area late in the night so that he could not be approached by residents while the director-general Hyderabad Development Authority is keeping us on false hopes”, he contended.
Mr Abro said that manholes were lying without covers which was too dangerous for children given the fact that such incidents had already occurred in the taluka.
Qasimabad taluka nazim Noor Mohammad Shoro remained inaccessible to residents and failed to make his presence felt in the area.
According to a UC nazim, he complained of non-availability of funds but he never tried to take up the matter with the district government.
