LAHORE: A 13-year-old boy and his mother were killed when a toy-like explosive device went off at their house in Multan on Saturday.

Police said Anas had brought the speaker-shaped object from a junkyard in Naik Town near their house. He took the device to a room of their home where his mother Nusrat Bibi was also sitting.

Police said the boy was playing with the object by taking it as a toy and attempted to dismantle it when it exploded.

Police said the boy and his mother suffered critical wounds and died on the spot.

Multan City Police Officer (CPO) Akthar Farooq told Dawn that he visited the site and had spoken to local residents.

He said initial investigation suggested that the boy had taken the object from the nearby junkyard. He said the boy might have been examining the object when it exploded. He said police had collected the evidence from the scene.
