WHILE artificial intelligence (AI) offers unprecedented opportunities to improve public services, stimulate economic growth and accelerate digital transformation, these benefits should not come at the expense of citizens’ privacy and security. The protection of personal data must become a national priority. Strengthening cybersecurity infrastructure, enacting comprehensive data protection legislation and establishing ethical AI governance frameworks are essential to ensuring that technological progress remains aligned with democratic values and basic rights.
Institutions such as the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) must continue to duly invest in advanced cybersecurity measures, regular security audits, encryption technologies and skilled cybersecurity professionals to safeguard the sensitive information that is entrusted to them. At the same time, policymakers, technology companies, academia and civil society must work collaboratively to develop AI systems that are transparent and human-centric.
Public awareness with respect to digital privacy and cyber hygiene should also be promoted so that the people may actively protect their digital identities in an increasingly interconnected world.
Pakistan stands at a pivotal moment in its digital journey. The decisions made today regarding AI governance, cyber-security and data protection will determine whether technology becomes a force for inclusive development or a source of vulnerability and mistrust. By embracing innovation while safeguarding privacy and strengthening public trust, Pakistan can fully harness the transformative potential of AI for the benefit of future generations.
