Book review: LEGO Marvel Character Encyclopaedia

In the year of Avengers: Assemble, all you need to prepare for Avengers: Doomsday is a quick refresher on the superheroes, their allies, the villains and those who support them. And LEGO Marvel has come up with a Character Encyclopaedia that makes the ‘refresh’ even more refreshing!

In this all-colour illustrated LEGO Marvel Character Encyclopaedia, you not only meet more than 200 minifigures from the LEGO Marvel world, but also learn about their likes, dislikes, friends, foes, skills, gear and everything in between.

Now, how can LEGO minifigures help you refresh your memory ahead of a live-action flick? You might ask. Well, the characters are essentially the same in every iteration, whether in the film world or the LEGO world, with minor adjustments. Reading about one can help you understand the gist of the rest, including characters who aren’t very popular or considered mainstream.

The book is divided into four parts. The first deals with characters from the Spider-Man universe — or multiverse, whatever you like to call it. Then there is a whole section on The Avengers, followed by one on Villains and finally one on Allies.

If you don’t know the difference between Carnage and Scarlet Spider, know nothing about Iron Man’s armour, or can’t believe that J. Jonah Jameson’s secret to supreme fitness is tai chi, you need to get your hands on this book. Even the X-Men and the Fantastic Four get a mention here, and why shouldn’t they? You’ll meet them soon on a screen near you.

The book is for all ages. Its 6+ rating doesn’t mean it’s only for kids; it’s for anyone interested in Marvel characters. It covers not only the good and bad guys but also those on the sidelines, including Daily Bugle employees and minor characters like Miek and Korg, who are part of the LEGO minifigure collection.

Don’t be surprised to find non-superhero folks like MJ, Ned and even Agent Coulson in these pages. If you have a LEGO minifigure and are part of the Marvel Universe, you are bound to have a full page dedicated to your ‘services’ in this encyclopaedia.

The best thing about the book is that it comes with an exclusive Captain America Minifigure, absolutely free! Now, how is that for a treat?
