KARACHI: Police on Wednesday arrested a teenage boy for allegedly raping and murdering a minor girl in the Qayyumabad area within the jurisdiction of the Defence police station.

South DIG Syed Asad Raza said, “Preliminary findings suggest it is a case of sexual assault and murder.”

The Defence police had registered an FIR on the complaint of the victim’s father and arrested the 17-year-old suspect, who lives with the family.

According to the FIR, the complainant stated that his relative took his daughter outside the house on Tuesday to buy her something to eat. Some time later, when the child was brought back home, she was unconscious. She was initially taken to a nearby private hospital before being referred to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, where she died.

A post-mortem examination was conducted at the hospital, the DIG said, adding that doctors had reserved their opinion on the cause of death.

Man dies by suicide

A man ended his own life at his residence in Model Colony, police said.

Officials added that 37-year-old Muhammad Farooq died by suicide after he hung himself from the ceiling. As per an initial probe, the deceased was facing domestic issues.

The corpse was transported to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for medico-legal formalities.

In another incident, a man was shot during a robbery in Shah Latif Town. Police said armed men attempted to loot 19-year-old Naveed. However, he put up resistance and the muggers shot him. He was shifted to the JPMC for treatment.
