PESHAWAR: Death toll from the ongoing spell of monsoon rains in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa surged to 13 on Tuesday, with eight people being injured in separate incidents.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority reported four more fatalities in rain-related incidents in parts of the province. The PDMA said that one death was reported in Peshawar, Abbottabad, Lower Dir and Bajaur each.

Meanwhile, a youngster was swept away by floodwaters in Swabi.

When contacted, spokesman for Rescue 1122 in Swabi Luqman Khan said that the emergency service’s control room has received information about the drowning of 22-year-old Hilal Khan in the Nazar Kali Badri nullah flooding. He said the Rescue 1122 personnel immediately reached the area after learning about the incident and started a search and rescue operation.

“After several hours of effort, our team recovered the body of Hilal from the water and handed it over to the family after necessary action,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rescue 1122 advised people to stay away from water bodies, floodwater and the Indus River downstream of Tarbela Dam as the spillways were opened to release excessive water.

In the early hours of Tuesday, the provincial capital also received heavy rains. No damage to public life was reported. The rainwater entered houses in several parts of the city and major thoroughfares.

According to Rescue 1122, University Road was flooded after heavy rain, disrupting traffic for a long time.

Also, several parts of the provincial capital reported prolonged disruption of power supply due to heavy rain.

Peshawar Electric Supply Company said in a statement that its 148 feeders tripped due to downpour. It added that more than 12-hour rain resulted in the tripping of 71 feeders in Peshawar, 22 in Mardan, 33 in Khyber, 12 in Swabi and 10 in Swat circles. It said that University Town, Gulberg, Cantt, Warsak and Shabqadar areas in Peshawar Circle faced power outages, with Pesco workers later restoring power supply from 42 feeders.

Meanwhile, Rescue 1122 in Nowshera rescued 12 people stranded in flash floods in the Akora Khattak area and six near the Adamzai Factory.

In Charsadda district, heavy rainfall led to waterlogging in the main bazaar, Old Bazaar, Hail Sideri Bazaar and adjoining neighbourhoods and traffic disruption to the inconvenience of commuters and shopkeepers.

Residents complained that poor drainage and the failure of the tehsil municipal administration to clean drains before the monsoon resulted in stagnant and contaminated water overflowing onto roads and, in some areas, entering houses.
