Girl dies by ‘suicide’ in Chitral

CHITRAL: A teenage girl ended her life by reportedly jumping into the river in the Khot village of Upper Chitral here on Tuesday.

Mulkhow Torkhow Sub-Divisional Police Officer Mulai Shah told Dawn that the girl had been identified as Sumayya, 15, who went missing while returning home from a seminary of the village. Later, her body was recovered from the river near the village.

Mr Shah said that the deceased was unmarried and had reportedly had minor altercations in the family. He said postmortem of her body was carried out and an inquiry had begun under section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure to ascertain the cause of her taking such an extreme step.

Earlier, a young woman had ended her life by jumping into the river in the Kari village of Lower Chitral. Her body was retrieved near Drosh a day earlier.
